Happy to see Princess Kate doing so well, but...

I'm really glad to see Kate doing so well, and I am glad she has finished chemo looking so healthy and happy. However my sister and I cannot stop laughing at the video Kensington Palace have just released.

We think the video has a striking resemblance to the Twilight films, only warm toned and shorter.

Narration - check
Holding hands while lying down in a meadow - check
Tree climbing - check
Stacks of logs - check
Dramatic sweeping shots of trees - check

I was waiting for William to say something really cringy while giving Kate a piggy back ride.

Yes very down to.earth, who amongst us hasn't wafted whimsically through a wheat field followed by a camera crew?

Sorry but were you thinking this is a documentary? It's a short film with a personal message. A bit arty and quite charming. Fresh and a new approach to royal comms. I like it, you don't, that's ok.

It just seems so out of character for her, for both of them. They usually seem so private and reserved.

They tried being private and reserved earlier this year, didn't they. Where did that get them? Lots of 'where's Kate' and vile rumours and speculation here on MN and elsewhere.

Exactly. They can't win.

I think it's fine (not someone who takes any interest in the royals generally) but I do think the bit at the end about the cancer journey is a bit unfortunate. The video shows an image of perfection that is nothing like most people's experiences. Seems a bit virtue signally

ilovesushi · 09/09/2024 21:22

I love how it is so unashamedly sweet and lovely. I think because they seem like such lovely, genuine people, they pull it off. I do like the Twilight comparison though!

Meanwhile behind the camera there was :

  • a nanny watching the children
  • a makeup artist ready with face powder
  • a hair stylist with a brush out
  • a director telling them how to pose
  • probably someone doing the lighting
  • maybe a drone operator
  • and Paul Burrell's replacement holding refreshments on a silver tray

It's all so lovey and cosy and relatable!

She is a person, a mum, a wife and a sister and a daughter. She has been incredibly poorly and completed undoubtedly gruelling chemotherapy and wanted to share this news with the nation. Rather than being happy for her you are choosing instead to make foul snippy comments like this. I find this hyena mentality incredibly disturbing in that rather than supporting another woman you are trying to tear her down.

I liked it. Very intimate and moving.

I have also been surprised by how long her 'preventative' chemo lasted.

I have bc and mine took 8 months. You can miss weeks like I did if your neutrophils or platelets are too low etc. I missed 5 weeks.

Schweet, weird, cheering and she’s not coming back to work.

Makes one horribly sorry for all the poor women who battle onward, coping with jobs and DC. That’s not a criticism.

This. Its so twee. And frankly bears little resemblance to many women's real life experiences. It's great shes well it is just not necessary to make a video about it.

Those praising her grammar do know that an official wrote her script, right?

Yep! Proper nasty.

Agree. The video was how Kate wanted it to be. I thought it was delightful.Great that she is feeling well.

CuttySarcasm · 09/09/2024 21:15

Imagine having so much anger in you, that you're nasty about a Mum going through chemo. My life is pretty busy and happy, so I don't need to be so unkind about other people. Some of these comments are the worst of Mumsnet.

True 🙁

She says “William and me”, shouldn’t it William and I?

No. Not in this construction

Bit odd given she’s royal to get that wrong?! Is there no one helping with her PR? I mean isn’t it “the queens English?” So they royal family should get it right?

Oh my! It feels like an advert to join a cult, or for sanitary products in parts.

Exactly what my dh said admittedly haven't watched it all .Tbh won't as feels bit ott.

King Charles' first speech as king included a clanger of "Camilla and myself" when he meant "Camilla and I". Even if every word of that video was written by someone then either Kate has a better speech writer than Charles or she has a better knowledge of grammar and knows when to correctly use I, me and myself.

If you think royals (and politicians) ever write their own speeches, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

BettyBardMacDonald · 09/09/2024 20:55

But I mean... how many public duties did she undertake before cancer? Attending dinners, premieres, ??

Just found one site that said she had 90 public engagements in 2022. That means she had 75% of days of the year with zero public engagements. (or more than 75%, assuming some days had more than one stop...)

So "stepping back" from that low level of work is extreme privilege no matter how one looks at it. I don't begrudge her but she is not exactly hand in hand with the vast majority of cancer patients who still have to worry about paying the bills.

Campaigning for more paid leave and other support for ALL cancer patients might be a good project for her in the future.

90 days equates to 2.8 days a week. Not that unusual for a mum of young children

Gingerkittykat · 09/09/2024 21:30

The video is one of the cringiest things I have ever seen.

It's not wrong.

TicTac80 · 09/09/2024 21:31

I thought it was a lovely video. :) Very heartfelt and I wish them all the best and that she has a smooth recovery. I see the struggles that many of my patients who have cancer have to go through, so always great to see when people are doing ok.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 09/09/2024 21:33

I thought it was really sweet and am so glad she's doing well.

The video means she doesn't have to do loads of uncomfortable interviews with awkward questions about how she got through it and how her family are coping, so although it seems like an intimate snapshot, she's still keeping her children away from press intrusion by telling it way she wants, when she wants.

I really hope you don't ever have to go through a cancer diagnosis and treatment yourself. There is nothing remotely "funny" about this.

If you are truly sick enough to think that this is "the funniest thing ever" then I think you need professional help.
