What age would you worry if dd didn’t have period?

Dd is nearly 14. Developing normally re boobs and hair etc but no periods yet. I was 12 as was my mum and grandmother so I just assumed she would be. My ILs not here any more so can’t ask them when they started.

17

lots of girls haven’t started at 14. Has she got other signs of puberty?

Cheepcheepcheep · 06/09/2024 18:08

I wouldn’t be worried at 14. 16 would be a quick trip to the GP I think.

exprecis · 06/09/2024 18:08

Wouldn't give it another thought until she was 16

I don't think it's unusual at all for a 13 year old

Yes other signs of puberty - pimples and boobs and body hair and moods. Especially moods.

I was nearly 15, but my mum and sister were both 11!

It varies, even within families. Own DD was 11 but think younger DD will be much later

Spenditlikebeckham · 06/09/2024 18:17

I was 12...my 14 yo dd started before dd age 15...

Downthemedow · 06/09/2024 18:18

I was just before my 15th birthday, my mum on the other hand was 10! So it maybe doesn’t necessarily run in families. Is she quite small and slight? I was, and I think that was a factor.

LadyGabriella · 06/09/2024 18:18

I didn’t get mine till 14. I wouldn’t worry yet. I think later than 16 they investigate.

YeahComeOnThen · 06/09/2024 18:21

I wouldn't be concerned until she was 17, but if she was, I'd take her to a women's clinic.

is she very slim?

i was 12, almost 13, my mum 17

Numbersarefun · 06/09/2024 18:21

One of my DDs was 11 and the other was 15. I think I was 13 so neither followed me. I think I said to older DD that when she turned 16 we would ask at the Doctor’s.

Octavia64 · 06/09/2024 18:23

The trigger for periods starting is usually reaching a certain weight.

Slim girls start later.

What's her weight like?

Medics are not normally concerned until 16/17

@Legoless

it probably won't be too much longer then. The hormones are a bitch (for most) whether you bleed or not.

PiggyPlumPie · 06/09/2024 18:27

GP won't do anything until 16. DD1 was two weeks shy of 18. DD2 was 14. No rhyme nor reason.

Username917778 · 06/09/2024 18:28

My daughter is very similar. She is almost 14 and I was just turned 11 when I started. I expected her to be the same age but to be honest I'm glad of it. Periods suck!

OneFastDuck · 06/09/2024 18:30

Is she very skinny? I'm sure I was always told most girls won't start until they're over 7.5 stone- height dependant of course.

But i wouldnt worry until she's 16 unless they're were other things too.

WheresMySupportCat · 06/09/2024 18:31

I was 13. I was very slight and thin and certainly got boobs and hips and then a tum before my first period started.

stripybobblehat · 06/09/2024 18:32

Make sure she's getting enough iron in her diet

mushypaperstraws · 06/09/2024 18:32

Definitely no need to worry until 16 and even then it's 17 for a lot of girls without any medical reason

12 is actually very young!

Andwhatfreshhellisthis · 06/09/2024 18:34

I took mine at 151/2 she was under 6 stone though (no eating disorder just light) and the GP was worried she started at 16 though.

PaillettenBedeckt · 06/09/2024 18:34

I hadn't had mine at her age. It started not long after my 14th birthday.

I did feel quite embarrassed about how late it was in coming so try not to make a thing of it.

hby9628 · 06/09/2024 18:37

This is a good question. My nearly 14yo hasn't started yet. Part of me is relieved but every time she has cramps or a sore tummy I think it might come. She has started to develop boobs but no body hair. I'm hoping she's got a bit longer not having to worry about it.

Iron doesn't make a difference to when periods start, although obviously a good thing to ensure.

largeprintagathachristie · 06/09/2024 18:38

I was 14.

Bunnyhair · 06/09/2024 18:40

I didn’t get a period until 14 - and had few other signs of puberty apart from terrible skin and a bad attitude.

I was also very short growing up and didn’t reach my full (bang on average) adult height until I was 20, after a mad growth spurt from age 17. I now suspect I had constitutional delay of puberty and growth, which is a natural variation in growth patterns.

Doesn’t sound like this is the case for your DD, OP - but I mention it in case anyone else reading this thread has similar concerns about their dd.

Changeiscomingthisyear · 06/09/2024 18:40

15 as per NHS advice.
