What age would you worry if dd didn’t have period?

Dd is nearly 14. Developing normally re boobs and hair etc but no periods yet. I was 12 as was my mum and grandmother so I just assumed she would be. My ILs not here any more so can’t ask them when they started.

I was 14/15 even though my mum was much younger when she started her periods. She has other signs of puberty as you say so I wouldn’t worry just yet.

Octomingo · 06/09/2024 18:47

Think I was nearly 14. Then didn't have another one until I was nearly 15. I was very tall, but not especially slim. Just that whole looks-slim-becayse- you're- tall thing. Didn't really have boobs or much bum. Didn't get hips until my 20s.

I'm not sure there is any rhyme or reason to it. Dd is shorter and curvier than I was at 13, but still no sign.

Definitely no need to worry until 16 and even then it's 17 for a lot of girls without any medical reason

12 is actually very young!

12 is the average age

OP nhs advice says to see GP if nothing has happened by 15 so I wouldn’t worry yet

One of mine was almost 15. She's always been very slim and active. Her slightly less slim and less active sister was 12 (nearly 13). I don't think you need to worry for another year or so.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 06/09/2024 18:59

I was several years older than my sister and my mum were when they started. My mum was a little worried but physically I'm a lot more similar to my dad's side of the family so my mum asked my dad's sister and she was also on the later side and I ended up being similar. I was 16 I think.

At 14 I don't think the GP would be interested anyway. Probably more like 15 coming up to 16.

17 ish

Is she very skinny? I'm sure I was always told most girls won't start until they're over 7.5 stone- height dependant of course.

But i wouldnt worry until she's 16 unless they're were other things too.

I'm sure weight is a factor but not a hard and fast rule. I wasn't over 7.5 stone until I was well into my 20s and my periods started at 11.

Similar for age of other members of your family starting.

OP, I'd agree with others. Not one to worry about until she's at least 16.

I was 11 my twin sister was nearly 18!
strangly, she started the menopause before me and her symptoms has been really bad, where’s I’ve had hardly any menopause related symptoms only really light night sweats and obviously periods have stopped

Glitter0 · 06/09/2024 19:16

I was nearly 15. Maybe you would see a doctor at 16 or 17, but I wouldn’t worry now.

NellGB · 06/09/2024 19:18

My mum took me the GP when I was 14. Which turned out to be the right choice as it was discovered there was a medical reason they hadn’t yet started.

RoyKentwhistle · 06/09/2024 19:21

I'd left school when I started my periods. So 16

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 06/09/2024 19:22

Given your family history of early periods, I would do a trip to GP at age 16 if no periods.

With my family history of late bloomers, I am not going to worry until age 18.

They keep lowering the age in the NHS advice to reflect the average.

TheCompactPussycat · 06/09/2024 19:25

Trip to the GP at 16 to flag it up but don't worry until 17/18.

DD was almost 17 when hers started.

Lourdes12 · 06/09/2024 19:26

Lucky her. I was 8 when I got mine 🙁

MumChp · 06/09/2024 19:26

At 16 I would consult GP.

NetflixAndKill · 06/09/2024 19:29

Slight derailment but, isn’t the human body incredible? I didn’t realise weight was a factor of when a girls period could start. I’m guessing the body knows when we’re at a weight healthy enough to carry a baby. As you were ☺️

Ozanj · 06/09/2024 19:32

It depends on your family history. If you’re worried then go and speak to a GP. Note that the age is race dependant too - if your dd has east asian ancestry then 16 etc can be normal.

Lol my sister was 4 stones when she started her period at 10. It’s common for people of certain races to have early periods and weight doesn’t play a factor

Mooneywoo · 06/09/2024 19:34

I was 15 or 16 so I wouldn’t worry until then.

That’s not why weight influences periods. Visceral fat generates estrogen and that can be enough to tip over the levels needed for the ovaries to start off periods.

It’s got nothing to do with “healthy weight to carry a baby” at all.

I mean in many cases it absolutely is a factor. Childhood obesity is directly linked to early puberty. Girls who are overweight on average start their period earlier than girls who are a ‘normal’ weight for their age, many studies show this.

NetflixAndKill · 06/09/2024 19:43

@SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice Are your knickers on too tight?

Oh, are you not happy to learn your guess about the female body was just plain wrong? 😑 Thought you liked learning things.

Ozanj · 06/09/2024 19:49

There is only a link for precocious puberty not normal puberty between 8-16 and it only applies significantly to white / black americans and chinese people. Other races / people show significant inverse associations with age at firsr period and obesity
