To be fair many Wetherspoons are full of stinky animals 😂

(I'm not really dissing spoons, I enjoy the odd trip there myself, but as somebody who has worked in a few and been in more, gosh the clientelle often lives up to reputation, particularly the day drinking men!)

I live in a deprived area so I know exactly what you mean but I actually LOVE the fact that it’s really inclusive and diverse and you see people of all social classes and ages enjoying themselves.

IMO there are many reasons to avoid a Wetherspoons.. them not allowing dogs is another one. Awful places.

Had lunch today in a cafe where dogs are sooooo welcome . Small dog under a table going berserk everytime a dog went past outside or came in . The owners just sat there. Absolute cunts. So lovely to go in a Spoons where they are banned. So ,so lovely.

I very much agree.

The spoons in my local town is awful but the imperial in Exeter is nice and not too far!

Stanstead airport weatherspoons is the best one I've visited.

Iamanunsafebuilding · 06/09/2024 20:33

That will be the Savoy.
The other centre one (Sir Dan's) is a bit of a dive.
The Dockle Farmhouse is nicer than both. Is huge, and has a massive garden.

@XenoBitch the Dockle is a bit fighty though!

Likewise, I've never been in one that I'd ever want to return to, and the gurning Tim Martin doesn't add to the appeal.

He no longer runs it ,I believe his son is the CEO now. We often drink and lunch at spoons and have never been in a grotty one, the worst I've been in is the one in Bolton.

Ha, after pubs reopened during Covid, there was a mass fight there.
Can't say I have seen any trouble there, but I tend to go in the day and not the evening.

I want to start a thread about the worst Wetherspoons now!

The worst one I have been in terms of 'grottiness' is the one in Preston near the jobcentre. Just gross. It's apparently improved now.

I went to one in Batley recenttly when I was there for work and that one was just awful. Loud, full of a certain type of clientele who were all scruffy, loud and obnoxious, and it just seemed like a scruffy old boozer.
Food was good, however.

Borborygmus · 06/09/2024 21:29

I've only visited a few, but they've all been pretty grim.

Abouttimeforanamechange · 06/09/2024 21:37

Friends and I always check out the Spoons if we're visiting somewhere new. Some are better than others, but we've had many good experiences.

Ladies' loos are always excellent, would put many more upmarket places to shame. And there will be an accessible one on the ground floor, or a lift if you need to go up or downstairs.

I agree about the Ramsgate one. Travelodge with a room facing the harbour, scampi and chips at the Spoons and a drink out on the top deck, what better way to spend a few days in the summer when the sun is shining?

IamAutumn · 06/09/2024 22:00

@XenoBitch < No it was in City of London. There were two One near Leadenhall Street. Had small galleried alcoves, sometimes used for Bridge and Poker.

DeeCeeCherry · 06/09/2024 22:00

I love a 'Spoons. I was in there yesterday for lunch with a friend, going to another in 2 weeks time too to meet my DC who lives miles away. Very reasonably priced food and drinks, plenty of choice, that'll do me fine. Lots of nice Wetherspoons about, I've been in 2 I didn't like over the years but that's it.

ItWasnaMeGuv · 07/09/2024 15:39

We have been Wetherspoon regulars with our friends for many years, the one we loved was a converted church that had a massive (and I mean massive) chandelier.I loved going there on a Tuesday (steak night) and Thursday (curry night). Sadly, it got sold on to another chain (I reckon the roof needed a huge £££ injection to repair leaks) and we transferred to the other nearest in town. It is a converted cinema but has no character visually. On the other hand the staff are fantastic and we know loads of other regulars. The drinks selections are awesome, something for everyone, and I love the bottomless tea/coffees/chocolate for a mind blowingly cheap price £1.59 at the moment. Cannot be beaten.

I'm surprised people are saying they go there for a peaceful meal out. On the rare occasions I've been in one it's always been rammed with people getting loudly pissed at all times of day, like an airport pub so quite the opposite.

GameOfJones · 08/09/2024 08:23

Perroi · 06/09/2024 15:47

I did not know they were dog free! That's another reason to go. It feels like every cafe I've been to you are surrounded by dogs.

Agree. That is a big plus for me too.

The nearest one to me is full of people from nearby offices at lunch times. There’s usually a few families. Some older couples.

I often meet my auntie or my Dad there for lunch.

The one in the town centre (town centre is a bit rough) doesn’t have any trouble either. At breakfast it’s usually people like my hair dresser who pops in for breakfast before she starts

I suppose like most things it depends where you are.
I'm in Dublin and the one I was in was quiet that time of the day.
I haven't been there later so I can't comment.
