Nice to have a bit of peace.

If it wasn't for the Brexiteer owner, I might be in one too Sad

Yep, I agree with this. He’s a particularly unpleasant man, and so I avoid his establishments.

Mind you, I’m sure he’s sobbing into his pillow at night about losing my custom 😂😂

As for PP who mentioned about checking political leanings about every place, it’s not just his politics, it’s his overall behaviour and morals. I don’t deliberately check every place but if I find somewhere that’s run by an absolute arsehole, I’d give them a swerve. Likewise, if I find somewhere run by a good person, I’ll go out of my way to use them.

I know in the grand scheme of things it makes zero difference but I’m happier with that approach 🤷‍♀️😂

😂😂

With a really rainy day here and not being allowed alcohol on school I'd have happily ordered someone a drink to have for me 😂😂

This is one of the main reasons they get my business. The dog people have got everywhere else! Why deny folks one single dog-free place. Has everywhere got to be full of stinky animals?

To be fair many Wetherspoons are full of stinky animals 😂

(I'm not really dissing spoons, I enjoy the odd trip there myself, but as somebody who has worked in a few and been in more, gosh the clientelle often lives up to reputation, particularly the day drinking men!)

I still remember the outrage over how staff were treated during Covid and how people would never go there again.

Short memories.

I was going to say, this is the reason I've not set foot in one since. The staff were treated atrociously, the owner is a bell end.

Because it was all a load of bollocks!

I've been in Spoons all day. Sadly working though not relaxing. Hope you had a good lunch OP.

Last Weatherspoon's was Gatwick South in May. It was unbelievably busy but managed to get a table. Really my expectations were low but the food was ok, the coffee was good and it was somewhere to while away an hour. The staff, however were brilliant with one young man stopping to have a chat and he even got us more coffees as it was mikes away. I do not agree with the owner's politics but I do love that many old wonderful buildings have been saved.

I'm retired, went to my first one in Oban last year and was impressed.

The Corryvreckan! My favourite Wetherspoons, we always go there when visiting Oban or catching the ferry for Mull.

Teajenny7 · 06/09/2024 16:41

Enjoy your lunch
I have gone to a few but never by choice. (Friends choice)
Have yet to enjoy the experience.

Just had a lovely home made lunch in a delightful free house. Delightful surroundings excellent personal service.
DH stated nice pint. Whereas, he complains about spoons as always at end of sell by date.
Not drinking beer I have no idea.

Ohh nice. We have a couple of nice ones near us.

last time I went I had the Korea bowl. Shame it came with chips not rice but it was decent.

There’s one near our offices so loads of people go for lunch. Especially in summer, it’s nice to sit outside. A quick and cheap meal and socialising all at the same time.

The one in my dds uni town is apparently good. Her and her friend love having tea there on the nights they do the pub quiz.

They usually let you swap if you ask Smile
I LOVE spoons. Tim Martin doesn't solely own them either, think 22% ish.

The vegan options are grand and always have been, LONG before the vegan 'movement' appeared.
I love their sauv blanc too a bit too much and you totally get what you pay for.

StarvingMarvin222 · 06/09/2024 16:50

I had cheeseburger and chips and to be fair I've had worse. And for €10.45 with a liqueur it was well worth it.

I'm home now it was just at nice to go somewhere and enjoy the quiet.

Ds and his mates go to our local Spoons because you can order at the table so no one has to queue at the bar and they can remain seated and chatting. Plus he says the food is good.

quantumbutterfly · 06/09/2024 16:57

I wish he'd save our local pub, developer bought it before lockdown ripped out the innards, let the damp in and has left it to rot so when the council refused him planning to convert it he could tell them no-one wanted to take on the overpriced lease. 500 year old building and the developer is allowing it to fall down so he can build houses on the plot.

Now my children are grown I'd be down there for a meal and a beer if it were a spoons.

I applaud him supporting the smaller brewers too, the industry is otherwise dominated by 3 big internationals.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 06/09/2024 17:08

Last summer my DD was doing her A levels. We often drove her in, and popped into Wetherspoons to wait for her. Cheap coffee and fast WiFi. Every morning an elderly man with some form of learning disability used to come in. He'd pull his toast out of his pocket. The staff provided him with a plate, collected his first coffee for him, and stop for a chat whenever they had a couple of minutes free. They were kind... just because.

I have rarely been in a 'Spoons where the staff aren't pleasant and helpful.

And my DD had an excellent experience when she worked for them one smer.

In short, I might not think much of the owner, but he's doing something very right.

LightSpeeds · 06/09/2024 17:14

I love my local WS. Cheap food and drink (and their fish and chips has never disappointed).

ScottBakula · 06/09/2024 17:14

I was inspired by this thread and really tempted to go into the city centre one I pass most days but it was absolutely packed so I gave it a miss.

There is a small one ( by their standards ) not far from me , it's the only one that I know that is all on one level including the toilets which means it's great for those that can't walk / can't walk easily.

MintsPi · 06/09/2024 17:20

XenoBitch · 06/09/2024 16:27

That will be the Savoy.
The other centre one (Sir Dan's) is a bit of a dive.
The Dockle Farmhouse is nicer than both. Is huge, and has a massive garden.

I go to The Savoy and Dockle quite a lot but only Sir Dan's once. I walked in and it gave me a weird vibe so walked out and have never been there since.

I dread to think what The Savoy would be now if not a Spoons. Probably boarded up or a vape shop.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 06/09/2024 17:25

I have been known to choose a flight out of Gatwick purely for the Wetherspoons…

BeaLola · 06/09/2024 17:35

A couple of years ago I went to one in Penarth and it was doooo lovely although the one at Ramsgate right on the Sandy beach with a beautiful outdoor patio takes sone beating

I also like people watching from the balcony at London Victoria whilst waiting for a train - have been known to miss a train on purpose just to do this

DH was visiting friends in Herne Bay this week and they piped into their Spoons for a drink and a pint was £1:49

MayaPinion · 06/09/2024 17:40

The one in my town is a great place to go for high grade cocaine.

You'd cut off your own nose to spite your face and lose out on a pleasant pub experience because you have a different opinion of the owner of a pub? Hmm

SeanMean · 06/09/2024 17:43

Can’t believe the love for Spoons on here….it’s not for me. 🤯

Ridiculous comment. Do you check the political leanings of the proprieter of every establishment you visit, paper you read, product you buy etc, etc?

Shame, you don't know what you're missing, reasonable food and drink at lower prices and in my area, set in lovely old buildings

Usou · 06/09/2024 17:51

All these self-righteous people that avoid Spoons because the owner is a Brexit supporter.

I'll bet you pump £50-100 worth of petrol into your cars every week from some of the most despotic and woman oppressing regimes on the planet without a second thought.

HauntedbyMagpies · 06/09/2024 17:53

SpiderGwen · 06/09/2024 13:20

There’s a lovely one in Harrogate; it’s hard to reconcile the splendid old building with the ‘pile em high sell em cheap’ vibe of the Brexit weirdo who owns it.

Nice cheap place for lunch.

Winter Gardens. Yes it's beautiful and totally wasted on Wetherspoons
