On my own having some lunch.
Nice to have a bit of peace.

If it wasn't for the Brexiteer owner, I might be in one too Sad

Snap!! Refuse to go in them for that very reason!

Ridiculous comment. Do you check the political leanings of the proprieter of every establishment you visit, paper you read, product you buy etc, etc?

I have the same problem with people who won't listen to music from certain artists, and 'hate' film makers and artists for similar reasons.

Politics, sexual leanings, etc.

I like sitting by myself in Spoons as well, our local one is beautiful, although the carpets could do with renewing. I like the fact anyone (over 18) can go in, there aren't many places that are very affordable, so while the clientele is many and varied, I don't mind that at all. Refillable tea works for me, and they will give you a fresh cup if you want one as well. Staff always lovely, and there are people with learning disabilities working there who have been there for years. Cheap, welcoming, inclusive, no music, good place to work for a couple of hours.

IMO there are many reasons to avoid a Wetherspoons.. them not allowing dogs is another one. Awful places.

It is a contentious issue. Fortunately, most other pubs allow them nowadays. Wetherspoons have said a clear "no". Not even in the outside areas. It is reassuring for people who do not want dogs in the pub when they are eating etc.

Judellie · 06/09/2024 18:08

I love Wetherspoons. So does my DS and he will eat hardly anywhere except McDonalds. It's a massive plus that it's dog free as DS is autistic and terrified of them.
And if you look at the latest Wetherspoons mag, you will find that they have printed ALL of the apologies they got from newspapers for those newspapers printing lies about what Wetherspoons did during covid/lockdown.

Aww, if I’d have known, I would have come to join you! Had a crappy end to a good week! Good and nice day to sink a few cold ones!!

Don’t blame you! YOLO!

A few weeks ago I got to my local shopping centre early (which happens to have a Wetherspoons inside!!) and went for breakfast by myself early before the shops opened! It’s bliss!

I still remember the outrage over how staff were treated during Covid and how people would never go there again.

Short memories.

Did you miss the apologies and corrections from the newspapers that published the incorrect rumours?

He doesn’t pay his staff when they are ill. They have to use annual leave.

EI12 · 06/09/2024 18:21

Love Wethers. Have a bit of a ritual when flying out anywhere, if available at airport, fish and chips, mmmmmm. Lovely. Enjoy it!

do you have a source for that? I hadn't heard of that.

It’s not ridiculous at all. If someone is loudly shouting their politics and you disagree with them, avoiding giving them money is the next logical step.

Catafult · 06/09/2024 18:26

Usou · 06/09/2024 17:51

All these self-righteous people that avoid Spoons because the owner is a Brexit supporter.

I'll bet you pump £50-100 worth of petrol into your cars every week from some of the most despotic and woman oppressing regimes on the planet without a second thought.

Filling your car with petrol is necessary, eating at spoons isn’t. Silly comparison

BESTAUNTB · 06/09/2024 18:27

They repurposed a rundown theatre in my old uni city. Nice to see it being used and they kept loads of original features.

Food is good for the price imo. I’ve had both the meat breakfast and the vegan breakfast in recent months.

Gruttenberg · 06/09/2024 18:37

Disgruntled Remainers won't change the mind of anyone who enjoys a reasonable priced meal and a drink in pleasant surroundings. The one where you live may be a dive but it's not like that for all of us, you know.

lissie123 · 06/09/2024 18:46

I’d never been to a Wetherspoons until early this year. It was a revelation. Breakfast was so cheap my DH questioned the bill. Bloody love a Wetherspoon's now

blueshoes · 06/09/2024 18:47

The prices for a pint and a meal at Spoons are very reasonable.

You get different groups who need to count their pennies: students, young families, pensioners. I like that for pensioners it is almost like a adult social club for older men. They can get noisy but they stay in their section and at least there is a place for them to get a pint(s) and some company.

CheshireCat1 · 06/09/2024 18:49

Hope you enjoyed your lunch, but personally I wouldn’t give him a penny of my money.

The ones by us have been refurbished beautifully and include lots of local history info. There's a few older 'dive' ones in rougher areas of the city.
As for the politics, I stay out of that. I don't boycott places just cause I'm a vegan and they sell meat (unless it's veal or fois gras) so I'd be a hypocrite to boycott Spoons on this basis plus as pp have said other indie places / franchises have owners with a range of political views.

A hard ‘no’ on dogs makes ‘spoons pub of the year forever.

Go somewhere else with your barky hound.

Isitovernow123 · 06/09/2024 18:59

Good on you! I love the cheaper 🍺 and the fact that’s there’s no music blaring out so you can’t hear people you’re with!

Aydel · 06/09/2024 19:06

I meet my cousin in the Southgate one. The service is quick so we can get back to work, and the food’s OK. We are usually the youngest in there by at least 20 years. And the loo is on the same floor! 😮

Sounds nice
Unfortunately the one in my town is awful

The one near my sister in law’s is really nice, but I’m not so sure about the one in my home town. Also I went with friends, years ago now, to one in the nearest city. They asked for ID and we were only ordering hot chocolates, which I thought was really weird of them.

I still remember the outrage over how staff were treated during Covid and how people would never go there again.

Short memories.

They were not treated badly during covid. The tabloids turned it into " Owner of spoons tells his staff that if they don't like it they can go and work for Tesco". That was not what he said at all. He gives his side of everything if you can be bothered to read it
