Is this really why women wear those sport's leggings?

According to dp it's to make other people look at their figure 🙄

I tried to argue that they are for practicality but I'm starting to think he's got a point.

I personally don't wear them and don't think I will if they will just make people stare at my bottom.

I think I've been quite naive.

The thought that I might be out running or walking my dog in leggings in order to attract men just shows that OPs DP really does not understand how unsafe women can often feel when out and about.

meatyryvita · 06/09/2024 08:59

I wear them because they're really comfortable. I don't look at my wardrobe choices each day with the male gaze in mind. It's so odd how men think that the world, and choices of women, revolves around them. I don't give a teeny, tiny crap what they think.

Does he wear certain trousers or t-shirts to 'flaunt' his figure? Or does he just get dressed in clothes he likes each morning?

Dotjones · 06/09/2024 09:00

The answer is some do, some don't. Some women wear leggings to draw attention to their legs and bum. Some wear them for comfort or because they are practical. I used to assume it was all for practicality until I saw those ones that are designed to look like they are slightly see-through. What's the point of that if not to draw attention?

Sorry, I fell asleep after I posted!

The leggings I'm referring to are the ones that are designed to amplify the bottom area. They almost look like they have padding in. I thought it might be to make sitting on a rowing machine more comfortable or something like that.

I've google the ruffled ones and they're on a different level! In my opinion not practical nor nice to look at. Looks almost painful.

Even so, they are probably wearing them because they make them feel good about themselves, not due to men wanting them because they have a bit of padding in their leggings.

Theunamedcat · 06/09/2024 09:01

No I wore them because they had pockets

Beekeepingmum · 06/09/2024 09:02

Normal leggings fine. Those weggie leggings are obvious just worn my those who want people to admire at their arses, there is no other purpose.

Starlight1979 · 06/09/2024 09:03

regementaria · 06/09/2024 08:24

I honestly can’t imagine have imagine having a conversation about women’s arses and tight leggings with my husband.

Yeah this. Apart from saying to me "you look good" or "that's a nice dress / skirt / whatever", I can't imagine a single time where women's clothes choices would come up in conversation with my DP.

I wear leggings most of the time and - shock horror!!!! - sometimes the ones that accentuate your bum (mainly because they're more flattering on my backside!).

I also sometimes wear low cut tops that show a hint of cleavage, dresses that are figure hugging to show off your waist and hips and in the summer, denim shorts that show my legs 😱

I can't think of a single instance where DP would think I was dressing for other men?! And if he (or any of my exes) ever did make a comment like this, they would be straight out of the door. I earn my own money, buy my own clothes and make my own choices so I will wear whatever the hell I want.

Jingleballs2 · 06/09/2024 09:03

"Graze your anus" 🤣🤣 yeah those are hideous and totally for attention.

Gym leggings or black ones which I wear for work are just normal practical clothing

BigDahliaFan · 06/09/2024 09:03

TheaBrandt · 05/09/2024 23:31

Sorry but those up the bum leggings are ridiculous and are surely worn to get men staring.

I have to agree with this. In a city last week people watching as I had a coffee there were many young girls going past, not on their way to the gym, wearing scrunch bum leggings and crop tops or all in one bodysuits. Not all of them looked fabulous in them....but they were gynaecological, you can see a lot. And you don't have to stare to see it.

Maybe it's not to get men staring ....but it got me staring.

girljulian · 06/09/2024 00:03

Men wear leggings as well, I see men running in them all the time. Are they also trying to get your bloke to look at them?

Saw some men in leggings in Miami that were, well, tight. They were looking for attention. Average bloke in running leggings not so much.

Biggirlnow · 06/09/2024 09:07

NewMe2024 · 05/09/2024 23:00

The ones that go up your bum? Yes. Normal leggings? Nope, they’re well suited to sports.

I agree with this.

Can't think of much worse to wear than the scrunch butt ones. Look like a permanent wedgey.

Beepybopp · 06/09/2024 09:09

I had an advert for these on YouTube last night after seeing this thread and the advert was all about shaping and separating your cheeks. So weird

eggandchip · 06/09/2024 09:14

I like leggings but not up the bum ones they must stink.
Mind you look at the shorts some wear tight almost see through they look stupid.

Seymour5 · 06/09/2024 09:14

I can’t believe so many posters are referring to ordinary leggings. I’m in my 70s, size 14/16 and I wear those to my exercise classes along with most of the other older women there. Leggings are comfortable, don’t catch on equipment etc.

Those are completely different to the ones that separate, lift and accentuate the buttocks. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone wearing those in the gym, they seem more of a fashion statement. The beige coloured ones make the wearers look nude at first glance!

Getmeahobnobstat · 06/09/2024 09:15

Honesty in anonymity…

I wear the leggings that accentuate the bottom from time to time. I feel pretty sexy in them and know my husband likes to see me in them. So, I guess I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wear them for attention.

I also have plain leggings by Nike or Next and these I just wear practically.

I agree with the op’s partner. My Nike leggings are way more comfortable. But I’ll often wear my more risqué leggings, makeup and do my hair, so I look pretty to go to the gym. It’s a confidence boost.

Cas112 · 06/09/2024 09:17

Course he's presuming women dress for men🙄

Starlight1979 · 06/09/2024 09:18

Josette77 · 06/09/2024 00:20

So what if women do wear them for attention?
Can someone explain why that's bad?

I don't see women wanting to look and feel sexy as a bad thing.

I dress up sexy sometimes and I love it.

God knows. Apparently we all have to walk around in ill-fitting baggy clothes just in case a random bloke thinks we're dressing for them 🙄

TheCadoganArms · 06/09/2024 09:20

Cas112 · 06/09/2024 09:17

Course he's presuming women dress for men🙄

Evidently some do, as illustrated by the post above yours. Most people it would seem just wear what they feel most comfortable in and could not give two hoots what anyone thinks, men or women.

GlowWurm · 06/09/2024 09:22

So that’s what’s going on with those leggings…I see them often around here and the wearers are never doing any kind of sport or exercise when wearing them, it’s a fashion thing to make your ass look porny.

As to the PP saying it never used to be a beauty standard, well anal sex porn never used to be the norm but it is now. These two are not unrelated.

If someone had an issue with normal leggings, that’s another issue. Those baboon scrunch leggings are totally different.

I would hate to be a young woman these days.

Starlight1979 · 06/09/2024 09:23

Bunny44 · 06/09/2024 03:50

Ugh your DP sounds incredibly misogynistic tbh. I've been wearing leggings all my life when I go to gym classes, as do many of the 80 year olds, people with learning difficulties and young teens that go to my gym. They are without doubt worn for practical reasons and most of the time there are no men in the classes so are we just looking at each other's bottoms then??? Sounds like a discussion a controlling man would have with their partner because they don't like them wearing "revealing" clothes 🙄.

Was just going to say this. I go to yoga twice a week and pretty much all the women in there wear leggings - some of them with the "scrunched bum". Seeing as though there are no men in the class and it's in the arse end of nowhere, who are we all wearing these leggings for?!?!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 06/09/2024 09:24

I don't see anybody at my gym with those up-the-bum leggings but it's a private golf club so perhaps different clientele? I only wear leggings for the gym, they're the M&S sport ones and they definitely don't go there.

I suppose women who like/wear thongs would get on with those other leggings but I would find them uncomfortable and, having spent hours at the gym working on reducing the size of my bum the last thing I would do is wear something to draw attention to it. That's what those up-the-bum leggings do, whatever anyone says. Wear them, don't wear them, who cares? Just don't pretend they're not for attention.

Starlight1979 · 06/09/2024 09:25

Theunamedcat · 06/09/2024 09:01

No I wore them because they had pockets

Oh my god you've just reminded me of my favourite Sweaty Betty leggings that died last year - they had two pockets which were perfect sized for my phone and car key 😍I might have to order some more now....

CharlotteBog · 06/09/2024 09:26

Portfun24 · 05/09/2024 23:11

Eh no I wear them to either exercise or because they are comfy and practical for kicking about in when I've errands to run. What a misogynistic view to believe that a woman wears something to be looked at.

Do you mean the scrunch bum ones? What is it about that particular style that makes them more suited for kicking and running errands? Are they more comfortable than regular leggings?

Fredshred · 06/09/2024 09:29

saraclara · 06/09/2024 07:45

So what if they do? Then they can't complain if men stare at them.

If you wear scrunch bum leggings, you want people to look at your bum. So don't then complain when they do.

Jeeze, even I can't help starting at women wearing them. But not because I'm attracted to them.

I haven't seen any evidence of any scrunch bum legging wearers complaining that men (or women) are looking at them. Only other women and men complaining that they're wearing them.

ginger2026 · 06/09/2024 09:31

I wear them cos they are my spin class leggings and they are also an easy outfit to be paired with tunics (from seasalt). Fairly expensive too so I want to wear them outside the spin studio. The tunic is so loose anyway and covers my bum!

Also leggings don't sag unlike tights.
