Is this really why women wear those sport's leggings?

According to dp it's to make other people look at their figure 🙄

I tried to argue that they are for practicality but I'm starting to think he's got a point.

I personally don't wear them and don't think I will if they will just make people stare at my bottom.

I think I've been quite naive.

I don't usually give a fuck what men think about women's clothing but I'm with your husband on this one. There are times when I have had to avert my eyes when confronted by someone wearing these- they're gross and leave nothing to the imagination.

I feel like a pervert if I so much as catch sight of someone in those baboon’s arse/scrunch butt leggings. Lifting and separating the arse cheeks like that isn’t about comfort and performance in the gym 😂 Any woman who says otherwise is being completely disingenuous.

shuggles · 06/09/2024 00:49

@LoserWinner The OP’s husband is just weird if he’s leering at women’s bums.

Sorry, but I have some information for you about men that you're really not going to like...

DissidentDaughter · 06/09/2024 01:20

Pornified arse crack kit masquerading as fitness gear.

Hideous.

twilightermummy · 06/09/2024 01:23

Oh I wish I hadn't read this as it's going to make me paranoid now! I thought they were so tight to streamline and aid running? A bit like lycra for biking. I'd hate anybody to think that I was wearing them for the sake of a man.

I usually look like a sweaty pile of shite by the time I've finished in the gym anyway, the last thing I'm thinking about is men looking at me. I hope they don't. When I don't have the kids with me, I tend to go into the women's room. I wish that there was an all-female gym near me.

RogersOrganismicProcess · 06/09/2024 01:27

Normal leggings of course not, but I don’t think the Op was talking about normal leggings.

Unless born and raised away from society in which we live, of course an adult female will understand the impact of clothing which completely accentuates her secondary sexual characteristics (using shape and colour).

We are preprogrammed to want to connect. Before people get to know our amazing personal qualities they visually asses our benefit to their survival/to the group’s survival. It feels good neurologically and biochemically to be wanted as our survival
was once based on it (not just be men, but by everyone). So yes, if they are honest (hard to do in a society that judges moral intent) wearers of bum crack highlighting leggings are doing so to attract gaze as a fertile being.

twilightermummy · 06/09/2024 01:28

Oh hang on! I've just seen what @mightymam
posted. I don't wear those! I think they'd be more of a hindrance to workout in. Come to think of it though, I've not seen anyone wearing those. Maybe I'm just too interested in what I'm doing and don't notice others.

Gentleness · 06/09/2024 01:31

When I see people wearing the kind of leggings pictured in this thread, I find it very hard not to stare. Nothing to do with attraction. Just can't help thinking how uncomfortable they must be. I have a similar kind of reaction to bunions and pimple popping.

AsYouWiiiiiiiiiiiiish · 06/09/2024 01:32

The scrunchy bum leggings? They're to make your bum look bigger/better... but good news, we don't need to police wha makes other women feel confident.

If you mean normal leggings?
They are obviously practical for sports, running and working out. They are functional and serve a purpose and its lovely they come in different colours and patterns these days.

I think you have a partner problem though, I certainly wouldn't want a man who thought like that (and tried to convince me of the same).
Screams of someone who thinks women exist just to show off and serve him.

The fact that you are thinking he is right seems like you may need to work on your internalised misogyny

DissidentDaughter · 06/09/2024 01:42

I suppose they serve a purpose as a visual guide to ‘how defaecation works’.

serenavanderwoodsenn · 06/09/2024 01:59

But SO WHAT IF THEY DO?
Seriously, if a woman does wear something which she wants to be admired in - so what?
This isn’t the 1800s. If a woman wants attention then more power to her. Why is it still considered wrong for women to actually want the attention? Men have been doing it since the beginning of time

Anxiouswaffle · 06/09/2024 02:02

I don't think scrunch bum leggings are worn because they are practical sports-round here you see them in the street not in the gym but i don't think they are worn for men (well not only)- a lot of women dress in clothes because its fashionable and makes them look good/trendy etc and its both for themselves and also other women to admire etc - the fashion conscious are probably also wearing baggier jeans to look trendy ..

GogAndMagog · 06/09/2024 02:40

Men who take their shirts off when it's hot just want me to leer at them so I go and stare and make suggestive comments like 'whooar' and objectify their bodies. Even better if there is a gang of us.

They're asking for it. Half naked in the street. They are definitely up for it.

They must be, right?

brainpain · 06/09/2024 03:03

having a curvy ass is part of today's beauty standards, so maybe women who do 20k squats to get a peachy bum want to show it off.
**
you can spot the women who grew up within 1980s beauty standards by their revulsion at big curvy bums.

Yep, I am in my fifties and curvy lifted, toned bums was not a beauty standard in my youth. V little focus on bums at that time. The changing beauty standards from generation to generation is interesting.

YellowAsteroid · 06/09/2024 03:06

I wear leggings to work out at the gym. They're the appropriate clothing for my workout. Simple as that.

Maybe it's your DP who is looking at other women's bottoms?

Etincelle · 06/09/2024 03:07

girljulian · 06/09/2024 00:03

Men wear leggings as well, I see men running in them all the time. Are they also trying to get your bloke to look at them?

If they wear scrunch butt leggings they probably are yes.

Garlictest · 06/09/2024 03:13

I wear leggings because I'm lazy and they're comfy! Your sleazy DP's welcome to ogle my shapeless bulk, should he so wish, but fuck knows why he'd want to 😂 I'm pretty sure my leggings don't "make" anyone look.

Off topic a bit but I do wonder if polyester (which is made from petroleum based chemicals) is a good thing for women to wear so close to the skin (especially during exercise) with regularity ie most leggings especially gym type ones….

Actually, there is some research on that and the news is not good.

This is why I wear cotton leggings. They don't trap sweat, so any chemicals aren't sitting against your skin. There are fewer chemicals and they wash out more easily.

If you wear the synthetic ones you should at least wash them several times before wearing, first with soap, then at least once more with vinegar. That will get much of the flame retardant out in most cases. The more expensive brands are sometimes treated with flame retardant that does not wash out.

Thread carefully: your gym clothes could be leaching toxic chemicals

Workout wear made from synthetic fabric is treated with chemicals, which research shows can be absorbed through skin

You clearly give a fuck what the men think.

Very much.

Seaside3 · 06/09/2024 00:16

The lift n separate ones are definitely worn to attract attention. They tend to be worn by ladies with glossy hair, perfect make up, toned abs and a manicure. Not judging, but let's not pretend they're for 'comfort' or exercise.

I don't think your husband is referring to the £5 asda ones which are thrown on to decorate the house/slouch around etc.
There are leggings, and there are 'leggings'.

If these women have toned abs it seems quite plausible that they workout which is probably why they have leggings.

Bunny44 · 06/09/2024 03:50

Ugh your DP sounds incredibly misogynistic tbh. I've been wearing leggings all my life when I go to gym classes, as do many of the 80 year olds, people with learning difficulties and young teens that go to my gym. They are without doubt worn for practical reasons and most of the time there are no men in the classes so are we just looking at each other's bottoms then??? Sounds like a discussion a controlling man would have with their partner because they don't like them wearing "revealing" clothes 🙄.

Loloblue · 06/09/2024 03:57

i wear leggings for running.
i think your DP has misguided ideas about why women want to wear sports wear and... ick.

Ottersmith · 06/09/2024 04:24

Funny how clothing that empowers women also coincidently make them look bare arsed. Women wearing bare arsed leggings, don't you feel like you've been tricked?

andthat · 06/09/2024 04:26

Maireadh · 05/09/2024 23:48

Leggings are very cheap, maybe only £5 a pair. You don’t have to try them on because they’re stretchy and they fit everyone. If you’re someone who doesn’t get out much, you can buy leggings at the local supermarket. They wash and dry easily, and don’t need ironing. They’re soft so if you have any type of tummy or leg pain they don’t press on it.

When I was pregnant I lived in leggings because they were the cheapest bottoms available. After my c section I still wore leggings because of the pain in my stomach. I wear leggings during my period because they’re easy to wash if I leak and they don’t hurt my tummy. My elderly mum wears leggings because they don’t hurt her varicose veins and she can get them on and off easily.

Lots of practical reasons to wear leggings, especially for elderly and disabled people. None of those reasons has anything to do with titillating men!

these are not the leggings the op is referring to.

it is the ‘scrunch bum’ leggings that have lift a separate technology around the bum, accentuating the buttocks and the ‘crack’ between them.
