For example: The Elgin Marbles. Heard these mentioned from time to time over the years. Always pictured marbles; kids’ marbles. Then I heard they were something to do with Greece and I’ve always thought Elgin was there. Got it all completely wrong

I was very young when the Troubles in Ireland were very prevalent. I had a confused idea from hearing the news that the Irish had something called "Jelly Night".
I couldn't see why that was a bad thing.

I always thought narwhals were mythical creatures from stories. Only recently learned they actually exist!

Me too!

TheMarzipanDildo · 04/09/2024 22:35

I thought Redcar (the place) had an ‘s’ in it. As in Redscar. But pronounced Redcar. Until last week when I brought it up conversationally. Blush

I only just found out yesterday that a gherkin is a pickled cucumber. I thought gherkins just grew.

IveShaggedSomeMingers · 04/09/2024 22:36

Shirley Temple was black. I do mean Shirley Temple. Pollyanna.

Is it not? 😬

No it's not, but it should be.

thankfully I looked it up before heading off to Wales to the DIY kitchens

@whoami24601 you were muddling him up with Marky Mark - Wahlbergs rap persona 😂

I imagine the Rosetta Stone to be in the shape of a rosette. It’s not

I thought it was a person until I was about 16 (i thought she was something to do with the civil rights movement, so think I must have been mixing up Rosa Parks).

Similarly, County Durham is not in Ireland.

And Carlisle isn't in Wales.

No. It was an axe.
Not an item used by a bartender.
There is a picture of it in this article.

I don’t think that’s a climbing axe. Not long enough, no loop hole at the bottom. Looks more like a bartender’s axe to me.

edited: just found another article and it turns out it was a climbing axe! Someone cut off the bottom

She does say "Mirror, mirror on the wall", though?

About 28 seconds in, it's quite clear to my ears.

Definitely some books (and the original in German) say Mirror Mirror on the wall but think a Disney version does say Magic Mirror …

😂yes, a bartender's tool could crack his skull open!

Until very recently I thought mole grips were special gloves (a bit like gauntlet style for some reason) that a person wore to catch moles.

I thought the Falkland Islands were just off the coast of Scotland.

You are not alone. I can't even explain why I thought this, and I thought it for so long that I still get confused if I think about it.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 04/09/2024 22:38

That Apple Bottom jeans from the Flo Rida song low weren't jeans that gave you an apple shaped bottom but were a brand of jeans owned by the hip hop artist Nelly.

They're just trying to confuse us, aren't they!

Buffyj · 04/09/2024 22:39

I thought moleskin notebooks were actually made from the skins of moles.

MadeleineMummy · 04/09/2024 22:40

I always thought Michael Jackson was white.

I've only just found out that such a thing exists and then had to Google to see what they were.

HedgeTrim · 04/09/2024 22:40

That the "R" in "R v. [name of defendant]" in legal cases was the initial of the person bringing the case. I though, gosh, there's a lot of very litigious people whose names begin with R.

Benvolio · 04/09/2024 22:40

Admittedly this was a child's mistake, but I found it so cute:

My DH had minor laser eye surgery one day to correct his vision and I mentioned it to the children who were playing at our house.

Child: 'ooh can I see him?'
Me: 'er yes, he's in the study.'
Child, ten seconds later: 'He hasn't got laser eyes, everyone, they're just his normal ones!'

I got confused with this as was always told (in a jokey way) that ‘The North’ started at Watford Gap. I mean it’s daft anyway but was ridiculous when I thought it was in Watford!

🫠 TIL. that makes a little more sense.

I can't believe this...

I've been wondering why Freddie Flintoff's brother, Andrew never appears in his current TV show and wondered if there was some sort of estrangement or jealousy on Andrew's behalf or maybe that he's just a much more private, serious person than Freddie.

And I too thought "their" parents must be so proud.

Then I read this. And I googled. And well...now I feel stupid.

Me and my nemesis, Cricket.

This is brilliant 😆

@thereiscustardinthejamtart I cant speak for the poster you quoted but, yes, I was a child in the 80s and was incredibly confused as to why we were fighting Argentina over some islands in Scotland.

No weirder than thinking an island off the coast of Argentina belongs to the British. I was very young asking my dad why the British thought it was theirs. We are not from the UK and his answer would be very inflammatory to post here
