For example: The Elgin Marbles. Heard these mentioned from time to time over the years. Always pictured marbles; kids’ marbles. Then I heard they were something to do with Greece and I’ve always thought Elgin was there. Got it all completely wrong

I thought that Pontefract was in Wales - in fact I still think it should be, definitely sounds like a Welsh town to me!

Hang on... whoa

Fish have a little swim bladder that's filled with air so they don't sink.

But wouldn't it have to work a lot harder if the fish was full of water so it weighed more?

For some reason I always thought that a "five o'clock shadow" was named for the position of the stubble on a man's face - I think I was subconsciously thinking of a sundial and how its shadows fall (I know that makes very little sense). Then just the other day someone used the phrase and it hit me that it referred to the time of day that the regrowth tends to be visible by Blush

This has really made me chuckle 😂

It still feels wrong that my instep is actually on the top of my foot.
It is?? Mind blown!🤯

Wait, what??

Cattery · 04/09/2024 22:28

As a kid I always thought it said Wallis. Always

Nooooooo!

And I knew someone who had one as a pet. Why don't they sink, if they're full of water?

Because they’re surrounded by water to hold them up I guess. Buoyancy. Where would the air come from? I never thought about it either until now. Puff= air. A puff of water?? Crazy.

That a horse called Bar ran in an awful lot of races.

And they weren't very good!

I always believed that the evil Queen in Snow White (Disney film) said ‘mirror mirror on the wall’. Now, rewatching with my toddler after 20 odd years only to find she actually says ‘magic mirror on the wall’. I rewatched it 4 times as couldn’t believe my ears.

She does say "Mirror, mirror on the wall", though?

About 28 seconds in, it's quite clear to my ears.

No, it's the arch between the toes and the ankle.

Is it not? 😬

sparklingwater1 · 04/09/2024 22:31

In my early twenties I was watching a sports Saturday thing with my brother and some extended family one day. I asked what a "Conference game of football was" as the scores came in...

My darling brother told me it was when the 2 teams sat round a conference table and decided how the game would be played.

I'm ashamed to admit I was late twenties before I discovered that wasn't true.

Toomanytesticles · 04/09/2024 22:31

That there’s no such thing as ‘baby broccoli’ ; it’s just actual broccoli that’s already separated.

Only found out a few months back when I went searching for the little broccoli in the supermarket and there was only the big kind 😂

On the topic of service stations, I thought Watford Gap was just outside London (i.e. in Watford). It’s in Northamptonshire and 75 miles from London.

I got confused with this as was always told (in a jokey way) that ‘The North’ started at Watford Gap. I mean it’s daft anyway but was ridiculous when I thought it was in Watford!

That this sign says ‘Libby’s’.

I thought it said ‘Libby’s’ until in my 40’s, sitting in the car, in the petrol station, staring at the sign…it suddenly morphed into Wall’s. 🤯

It actually changed in front of my eyes (a bit like those ‘stary’ books that were all the rage)

Of course, Wall’s Ice Cream!

I can see why you thought it, the Logos have similar fonts.

I didn't know dandelions had different stages 😅 I thought the yellow one and the one you blow the seeds from were just 2 different flowers 😮

Wigan Pier - never occurred to me that Wigan is inland!

Oh heck. I've even seen a documentary about it and the penny didn't drop 😬

This is one that really made me face palm….

puffer fish. When they inflate it’s not air. It’s water.

Holy shit, yeah! 😮🤦🏼‍♀️

llamajohn · 04/09/2024 22:31

For a long time I thought the author F. Scott Fitzgerald was a woman! Still have to think about it even now.

I think I confuse/conflate it with Ella Fitzgerald the singer.

Harrogate is a seaside resort.

I know where Harrogate is but for some reason I associate it with seagulls and ice cream and therefore the sea.

I also genuinely thought Pontefract was is Wales for years, well into being an adult.

I thought Scotch Corner was in the south east corner of Scotland. Nope, bits in Yorkshire.

For years I thought it was as Kensington Gore met Brompton Road because there was a Scotch House on the corner there. Blush

MrsMoastyToasty · 04/09/2024 22:33

DH thought that The Old Grey Whistle Test music programme from the 70s/80s was about sheepdog trials.
(He is old enough to have watched the programme).

That Frank Sinatra was black.

My parents had some 78 records with just the white wrapper and in the late 60s/early 70s I used to listen to Ella Fitzgerald and in my mind she was a white woman with a blonde beehive, possibly confusing her with Dusty Springfield!

I remember being shocked when I found out that she wasn't a white woman!

DontLookBackInBognor · 04/09/2024 22:34

For virtually 50 odd years, I thought octopus were orange - as all the kids story books show them as orange cheery looking things that wave at you with their tentacles… I was really shocked to find out that they are dull coloured and can be quite aggressive!

So Roy Orbison isnt blind??

Roadrunners are real?

That Timbuktu isa real place… I thought it was one of my Ddads daft tales

Really good thread, OP! Learning a lot here tonight 😵‍💫

My best friend at teacher training college had had a sheltered upbringing. She absolutely believed....
You couldn't get pregnant if you had sex standing up.( Sperm can't swim uphill)
That everyone had a baby inside them that was ready to start growing and that,as soon as you had a big white dress and a wedding, the baby started to grow. ( Everyone in her family had had a baby very soon after the wedding. I imagine some of them had a baby on the way before the wedding)
