Things you assumed and were astonished to find out you were completely wrong

For example: The Elgin Marbles. Heard these mentioned from time to time over the years. Always pictured marbles; kids’ marbles. Then I heard they were something to do with Greece and I’ve always thought Elgin was there. Got it all completely wrong

That Frank Sinatra was black.

Same but George Ezra.

I thought the exact same as you, OP!

I thought "The Ashes" was something involving the winners covering their face in ash - a cross between Ash Wednesday crosses on foreheads and warpaint. So I thought the winners would smear their face in ashes and roar in victory at the losing team whilst doing a sort of haka.

No. I'd never seen a cricket game in my life.

This is a much better idea than the actual Ashes.

I only recently realised that Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are not the same person.

It still feels wrong that my instep is actually on the top of my foot.

Phineyj · 04/09/2024 21:47

Well I imagine the Harrogate one is a naughty joke, but I definitely didn't see a beach when I lived there 😂😂😂

I actually really like that description of the Ashes. I would go to that!

mynameiscalypso · 04/09/2024 21:49

@thereiscustardinthejamtart I cant speak for the poster you quoted but, yes, I was a child in the 80s and was incredibly confused as to why we were fighting Argentina over some islands in Scotland.

It is?? Mind blown!🤯

Why would it be a naughty joke? I definitely did think it was. Till about 3 years ago when I actually went there.

keepingsanity · 04/09/2024 21:52

I assumed Tracy chapman was a man. Even though the clue is in her name Blush

@RealHousewivesOfTaunton (love the name) watchu on about???

It still feels wrong that my instep is actually on the top of my foot.

Isnt it the inside side of the foot? I never know which bit of motorway is nearside either to be fair.

I thought The Ashes were in a regular-sized trophy cup, was shocked when I saw a pic: it's the size of an eggcup!

NinaBernina · 04/09/2024 21:53

I thought that Pontefract was in Wales - in fact I still think it should be, definitely sounds like a Welsh town to me!

Cattery · 04/09/2024 21:53

thereiscustardinthejamtart · 04/09/2024 21:41

Genuine question, not being mean … most people hear about them in relation to the Falklands War, so did you think Argentina had invaded Scotland?

I did

I thought Adele was black Blush

I grew up abroad and moved to the UK in my 20's. I was surprised that there is no hard border with Scotland, and that I didn't need my passport when driving there from England! Even more surprised that there were different notes though!

I also always thought the Elgin marbles were giant marbles.

I never realised it was marble as in the type of stone.

Me, too.

TheChosenTwo · 04/09/2024 21:54

I thought, until around 6 months ago after reading MN, that Skegness was Scotland! Must have been the ‘mess’ bit that threw me. I think it was a thread about Butlins but I felt very stupid indeed 😫

WhileIBreathIHope · 04/09/2024 21:54

For years, I thought Flora MacDonald (woman who helped Bonnie Prince Charlie) and Florence Nightingale (founder of modern nursing) were the same person. The other day I was explaining to my son who Florence Nightingale was but conflating the two women and together we realised the timeframe was impossible 🙈

Hernamewaslola22 · 04/09/2024 21:54

I thought he was called pontius pirate not pontius pilate until about a year ago 😳

PurpleChrayn · 04/09/2024 21:54

I thought Guyana was in Africa, and Brunei in the Middle East Blush

https://www.lords.org/lords/our-history/the-ashes. I've just read this - fascinating!

The Ashes | Lord's

How a 'small but special' urn became the symbol of rivalry between England and Australia. Book a tour of Lord's to see the original urn.

Omg it’s like incline! Rather than inside! What the hell!

I never know that. Or inside/outside lane. I think on a dual carriageway the left lane is inside and right is outside. But the outside lane is nearer the middle/inside of the road. So that confuses me utterly.

Nearside I have no idea about. To me it should be the right as that's nearer the driver but I think it's the left, nearer the kerb.

OrinocoFlew · 04/09/2024 21:43

When football scores are announced on being “on aggregate” I thought some weighting / adjustment was being made due to the surface they were playing on, eg “Arsenal beat Man City 2-1 - that’s 5-2 on aggregate”

i didn’t actually think they were playing ON AGGREGATE (ie gravel) but I somehow did think something along those lines.

Tbf, it wasn’t a complete surprise when I discovered the truth!

This is comedy gold 🤣

Ps. I think it's called a cricket match
