For example: The Elgin Marbles. Heard these mentioned from time to time over the years. Always pictured marbles; kids’ marbles. Then I heard they were something to do with Greece and I’ve always thought Elgin was there. Got it all completely wrong

That Apple Bottom jeans from the Flo Rida song low weren't jeans that gave you an apple shaped bottom but were a brand of jeans owned by the hip hop artist Nelly.

Edited

Wow. I thought he just meant she had a nice round bum.

i was born and brought up in Wales. For years as a child I thought everywhere was Wales and everyone was Welsh It was only when we were on holiday in what must have been England when a girl asked me ‘do you have pop music in Wales ?, that I realised that we were seen as some kind of curiosity by some people

Tahlbias · 04/09/2024 22:41

My dad bought red top milk when I was little, and always called it bulls milk. It wasn't until I was in my late teens that I realised it wasn't actually bulls milk. I have no idea why he said that 😂

I used to believe when the clocks went backwards or forwards, we got an extra hour every single day and they changed again. God honestly

Until very recently I thought mole grips were special gloves (a bit like gauntlet style for some reason) that a person wore to catch moles.

I thought they were called Molar grips, like at the dentist.

I think the insole thing is confusing, because you buy new inner soles for your shoes, just makes sense that it's the same part of the foot touching it.

I thought the Falkland Islands were just off the coast of Scotland.

Well your better than me, up until this point I thought the falklands war was just a name they’d named a war and not an actual place 🤣

GCITC · 04/09/2024 22:41

I also thought Silicon Valley was where all the cosmetic surgeries were.

As a child I thought Alice Cooper was a woman. Always amazed at how low their voice was.

Fuck me, I'd only vaguely heard of Andrew Flintoff before this thread (never gave any connection to Freddie much thought) and was prompted to look him up to see what he actually did. Was quite surprised to see he was also a cricketer, and spent a good 30 seconds looking at his picture thinking "Well he does look like Freddie Flintoff, hardly surprising people thought they were related!" before the penny dropped.

BasiliskStare · 04/09/2024 22:41

When I was young I thought there was only one Concorde

I thought it was a person until I was about 16 (i thought she was something to do with the civil rights movement, so think I must have been mixing up Rosa Parks).

You might vaguely remember it but when VHS tapes were a thing and they still contained adverts there were language courses advertised by Rosetta Stone. For years I thought this Rosetta Stone lass must be busy making all these language courses.

It was only when I was older and interested in history I realised the Rosetta Stone was a tablet with multiple transcriptions in different languages on it.

What’s all this about Wigan Pier?

DopeyS · 04/09/2024 22:42

Not me but when I went to uni a housemate had her mind blown when we talked about the film Madagascar and I said I'd like to go. She thought it was made up for the film.

Happyearlyretirement · 04/09/2024 22:44

I thought that the saying piles apart just referred to poles such as washing poles or bollards, finding out it meant North and south blew my 50 year old mind and I thought I had to enlighten everyone with this new found wisdom. No one was impressed by my new knowledge.

I always thought narwhals were mythical creatures from stories. Only recently learned they actually exist!

Me too.. I thought it sas Like a unicorn, my 5 year old told me otherwise 😅 he also taught me that fruits have seeds, vegetables don't. I knew a tomato was a fruit, but a pepper etc.. mind blown

UnctuousUnicorns · 04/09/2024 22:44

When I was a child, I used to look at old photos and think that the world must have been in black and white back then, until the colour was "switched on".

I thought they were twins. Genuinely. I'm in shock and feel a bit...betrayed. It makes it all worse that he grew up only 20 mins up the road from me and we're a similar age so I've been hearing about "them", in my head the "Flintoff Twins" for most of my bloody life.

Ah, yes - Mary, Joseph and Jesus on the flight to Egypt accompanied by Pontius the pilot.

Happyearlyretirement · 04/09/2024 22:45

Poles not piles, that’s a different thing 🤣🤣

duckydoo234 · 04/09/2024 22:45

I haven't read all the posts, but are Andrew and Freddie Flintoff the same person, and a cricketer?

Yes. 😀

It took me way too long (years after 2000) to realise what y2k actually stood for..

TheMarzipanDildo · 04/09/2024 22:42

What’s all this about Wigan Pier?

There's a famous building in Wigan, Wigan Pier.

But it's not a pier. There is no beach or sea in Wigan.

It's actually an old Mill next to the Canal.

DopeyS · 04/09/2024 22:48

One of my own. Growing up I thought Gerry Adams was called Sinn Fein. Obviously the party was mentioned a lot when he was on screen and I thought it was just an Irish name.
