For example: The Elgin Marbles. Heard these mentioned from time to time over the years. Always pictured marbles; kids’ marbles. Then I heard they were something to do with Greece and I’ve always thought Elgin was there. Got it all completely wrong

My husband didn’t believe me that Sikh police officers can wear a special police issue turban instead of a hat

Same in the Armed Forces.

I used to think The Wallis Collection was Wallis Simpsons jewellery.

Falkland is in Scotland. Lord Falkland was, IIRC, some member of the government and explorers named the islands after him.

There are places all over the world named after the places explorers and colonists cane from, or had an affinity with. Prince of Wales Island is in Alaska. Perth is in Australia. London is in Canada. Wellington is in New Zealand.

However Moscow is in Scotland.

Dallas is also in Scotland.

But it's the Wallace Collection isn't it?

roundthepound · 05/09/2024 16:15

@Getonwitit

The British isles are not as shown on the weather map they tilt and therefore Edinburgh is further west than Cardiff.

You're worrying me now Confused How, just how??

Things you assumed and were astonished to find out you were completely wrong
Cattery · 05/09/2024 16:15

@diddl Possibly 😬

The news desk at Granada Television didn't take the Falklands crisis at all seriously at the outset; they made a background set with a map of Scotland alongside a map of South America - different scales, with the heading "Where are the Falklands?". Scotland was hastily painted out before it went to air when they realised it wasn't some sort of prank.

More a lazy not-noticing than an actual assumption, but it only dawned on me relatively recently that Tom's Midnight Garden and The Secret Garden are two entirely separate books.

See I had the same thing but with Tom's midnight garden and Goodnight Mr Tom..... 🤦🏻‍♀️

Gawjus · 05/09/2024 16:23

All my life until I was about 50, I thought Banoffee pie was named after the place it was invented. I thought it sounded like it was probably somewhere in Scotland. I was utterly gobsmacked when I found out the truth. Anyone else?

My dad used to announce "we about to hit spaghetti junction" ...at best the explanation got to "because of the road"...i hated it, every single time i ended up feeling really car sick ....from trying to look at the road surface .

Polo ponies are not young horses. They are a breed

Well firstly, no not quite - polo ponies are just horses used for polo and can be any breed.

Secondly, what’s that got to do with what I said?

Haven't read all the pages so it may have been mentioned already.

I was sure, like 100% sure, that in my childhood Walkers cheese and onion crisps used to be in a green packet and salt and vinegar in blue, but that at some point they swapped. I'm sure I can even remember being confused when it first happened after opening a packet from a multipack and it not being the flavour I expected. But apparently this never happened and the packet colours have always been as they are now. It's also apparently a very common false memory (mandela effect).

Yes but it was before Walkers, was Golden Wonder crisps, back in the 80s/90's

I thought Roy Orbison was blind.

YES! I get confused between him and the man in Peters and Lee.

Just to blow your mind, in some remote societies that is how they perceive the world. So they will tell you to give them the north spoon rather than the left hand spoon, and it doesn't change if you move. I read an account of someone from such a place (rural Australia I think) who went on a plane and felt very ill when they arrived at their destination due to lack of geographical orientation.

That's interesting thanks. That sounds right to me

Flatulence · 05/09/2024 16:29

I thought lots of stupid things for a long time, including:

County Durham was in Northern Ireland
Wick was in the Republic of Ireland
Wolverines were fictional
Leaving the house with wet hair will always cause a migraine
Some people's hair just grew out of their heads as dreadlocks and they had only two choices: cropped hair or dreadlocks. I didn't realise hair had to be twisted/combed into locs.
Sparkling mineral water came out of the ground already fizzy
A horse that's lying down is always dead

Absolute idiot 🤣

Custardandrhubarbcrumble · 05/09/2024 16:32

My daughter asked me who OJ Simpson was the other day and I later googled and realised I had mixed him up with Oscar Pistorius..... ok both sportsmen, both accused of murder but still.

Genuine question, not being mean … most people hear about them in relation to the Falklands War, so did you think Argentina had invaded Scotland?

Doesn't it make about as much sense as thinking that the UK would lay claim to land just off the coast of Argentina?

Gawjus · 05/09/2024 16:34

I grew up in the UK and was well into adulthood before I discovered that New Zealand wasn't just off the coast of Australia, and served by ferries hopping across like they do to the Isle of Wight.

My local shopping centre underwent a big renovation a few years ago. There was lots of hoarding with photos of people of all ages and types with phrases like 'the heart of our community'. After studying all the faces to see if I recognised anyone I remember thinking how good looking they all were, what good teeth!! It was only months later I saw one of our 'local' girls on a big poster for a shop and I briefly thought wow that's the girl from my town! Then the penny dropped.

DurhamDurham · 05/09/2024 16:43

County Durham was in Northern Ireland

I remember being on holiday in Spain as a young teen. Someone asked me where I was from and I said County Durham.
They asked me if I'd been affected the 'The Troubles' I was genuinely confused!
