Things you assumed and were astonished to find out you were completely wrong

For example: The Elgin Marbles. Heard these mentioned from time to time over the years. Always pictured marbles; kids’ marbles. Then I heard they were something to do with Greece and I’ve always thought Elgin was there. Got it all completely wrong

I’m learning a lot here…

I thought Hadrian’s wall was in Kent 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

No that’s Leeds Castle in Kent

Yes, I did too. I think it's the pont/bridge bit. Similarly, for ages I thought Billericay was in Ireland, as it sounds like an Irish place name to me.

I also used to think that Roy Orbison was blind.

I used to think Wales too.

I think Roy wanted you to think that tbf

I assumed Tracy chapman was a man. Even though the clue is in her name Blush

to be fair, Tracy can also be a man's name, and her surname is essentially ManMan!

That he was blind? 🤣🤣

I remember a post on here, where someone knew a young woman who truly believed sea horses were the size of 'land ' horses!

I always thought that 'both ways', when betting on a horse racemesnt that they ran there and back.
Dh was unimpressed when I said this loudly in a betting shop about 25 years ago. I still say, are you doing it there and bac, when he has the odd flutter

It’s “each way”

Win bet - you back the horse to win only
Each Way bet - you back the horse to Win or Place (finish 2nd or 3rd, or 4th if more than 16 runners)

So if a horse is 10/1 and you bet £5 on each type of bet:

£5 win bet = £50 winnings plus your £5 stake back
£5 each way (£10 bet) = If the horse wins £50 winnings for the win plus £10 winnings for the place, plus your £10 stake back. If the horse finishes 2nd or 3rd you get £10 winnings plus your £5 stake in the place part of the bet back

Me too. I learned from the Octonauts

Ditto!

LaMarschallin · 04/09/2024 22:22

I only found out today (when watching "Richard Osman's House of Games") that the lyrics to "When Will I be Famous?" were "When will I, will I be Famous? I can't answer that, I can't answer that" instead of "When etc? I can't handle it...".
A small thing but I can do that annoying "I was Today years old when I realised..." thing about it.
For about 1 1/2 hours anyway.

MrsMoastyToasty · 04/09/2024 22:22

I thought Scotch Corner was in the south east corner of Scotland. Nope, bits in Yorkshire.

Soubriquet · 04/09/2024 22:14

This is one that really made me face palm….

puffer fish. When they inflate it’s not air. It’s water.

Nooooooo!

And I knew someone who had one as a pet. Why don't they sink, if they're full of water?

Snapplepie · 04/09/2024 22:22

DH learned at university that the drug digoxin is made from foxgloves. Years later he realised that foxgloves were a plant and not foxes feet.

MrsMoastyToasty · 04/09/2024 22:22

Harrogate is a seaside resort.

Isn't it????

whalesonthebus · 04/09/2024 22:23

Pearl Harbour/Harbor? - I just assumed it was in the Caribbean and wondered how the Japanese managed to fly all the way over North America to bomb it. Only found out recently where it actually is!

Also thought until reading this thread that Roy Orbison was blind.

Cattery · 04/09/2024 22:25

I imagine the Rosetta Stone to be in the shape of a rosette. It’s not

Same. I'm 52.

And me (age 59 and 1/2)

Yorkshire!!!!

I thought it was where Scotland began (and England ended.)

Fish have a little swim bladder that's filled with air so they don't sink.

Omg I am crying at ManMan 🤣🤣

It still feels wrong that my instep is actually on the top of my foot.
It is?? Mind blown!🤯

Same! I 100% thought it was the sole of the foot!

DappledThings · 04/09/2024 22:26

GellerYeller · 04/09/2024 22:17

Pontefract literally means broken bridge! There’s a Pontypridd in Wales, assume that’s where the confusion occurs?
I thought light sabre in Star Wars was ‘Light Saver’ and that Taylor Swift had a ‘lonely Starbucks lover’. Apparently she’s ‘got a long list of ex lovers’ 😂

I only heard that song for the first time the other day. I heard "Starbucks lovers" too. I thought it was a good lyric, a play on "star-crossed lovers". Disappointed now.

On the topic of service stations, I thought Watford Gap was just outside London (i.e. in Watford). It’s in Northamptonshire and 75 miles from London.

LongTimeReading · 04/09/2024 22:27

The song "Nights In White Satin", which I cannot abide so didn't even listen to the lyrics...turns out it's "Nights" and not "Knights In White Satin" which is a completely different mental image.

Florafleur · 04/09/2024 22:27

That this sign says ‘Libby’s’.

I thought it said ‘Libby’s’ until in my 40’s, sitting in the car, in the petrol station, staring at the sign…it suddenly morphed into Wall’s. 🤯

It actually changed in front of my eyes (a bit like those ‘stary’ books that were all the rage)

Of course, Wall’s Ice Cream!

Things you assumed and were astonished to find out you were completely wrong
