Well it was a lot shorter than the Barclays scam that went on for days even when I told them I was in oncology having chemo they scammed £9000 out of me and, thanks to you lot I got it back. This time he called asking if I paid for postage from Evri in reply to an email Evri sent saying they couldn’t deliver. I went into that email and filled it all in but never paid the delivery. He told me it was a scam and they need to send me a new card. I said well the parcel has still turned up and I’m not interested in a new card I use my phone anyway and I will call you back. His reply? F you and put the phone down. Honestly, they are relentless.

You should see the other thread on this. It's incredible how much OP was scammed and what she did. These people are real pigs!

Have you got a link please?

Haha! DP got told to fuck off when the Postcode Lottery phoned him to tell him he'd won (we don't play), and asked him for his post code. He said that surely as the postcode lottery they'd know that, cue the 'fuck off' and hang up. Hilarious.

Eek, is it unwise to give a scammer your postcode? I had someone on FB Marketplace only today, apparently very interested in the nest of tables I've been trying to sell for the last six months. She wanted to come and get them straight away, and asked for my postcode. I gave it to her...and she appears to have blocked me.

Is this a scam, do you think? I know about the courier scam, but this lady seemed to want to collect them herself. What could she do with my name and postcode? I didn't give her my house number.

Perhaps the reason it’s hard to get to speak to your doctor is because they’ve had to go round to your house to post a note through your door to tell you that your platelets are dangerously low because they can’t get through to you on the phone ?

All my messages from the GP are via text - it's like they've discovered a new toy! Up-dates on everything from test results to training days to the state of the toilets! So, no, I don't think they will be visiting me any time soon.

My go to response is to ask the scammer
'Does your mother know what you do? Is she proud of you?
Doesn't always have an effect but sometimes it really does.

I just never answer numbers I don’t know…

I'm the same. If the number isn't in my contacts I don't answer and ignore (landline), or they can leave a message if it's a genuine caller (mobile). No message, once again they are ignored.

Not sure if yours is a scam, but in our case DP didn't give it when asked as surely if they were calling to let us know we had won the postcode lottery, they would know what our post code was, i.e. the winning one. God knows what they would have asked for next, but they got cross at him, told him to fuck off and hung up so we will never know.

I ordered living room furniture online from a reputable company. Estimated delivery was 2-3 weeks from order.

2 days later I get a text "dear customer, your Web furniture order will be delivered tomorrow, click here for tracking information <link> ". Obviously I ignored it - was laughing with my husband how mad it was that I had indeed just ordered furniture and its a good job I'm not a pushover etc etc. It's usually the Evri ones but this wasn't.

No... it actually arrived the next day and was totally legit 😳🤣 It really didn't read well at all, I was gobsmacked!

Mt61 · 05/09/2024 17:54

Always use to get scammers phoning around 4pm to tell me I had a problem with my computer, told them husband (works in IT for the police, & hand the phone to him, he would have them tied up in knots- one even told him to F- off, ha

Now he’s just called me to ask if I’m a Jehovah

Why are you answering calls from people you don’t know? Don’t answer!

And don’t click on links in emails and messages unless you were 100% expecting to receive them.

I had a phone call from virgin media recently doing the “annual customer check” aka upselling where they want to check I’m happy with my package and try to convince me to get a better one. I think it was a genuine call but how can you tell these days 🤷‍♀️. I mean no way would I have given any bank or card details out but I did tell them my postcode as they asked me confirm it. Suppose I should have refused to tell them it. I just kept repeating i didn’t want faster broadband or better tv. Again the woman barely spoke understandable English but ime that’s not unusual for Virgin call centre staff, obviously out sourced.

Sadly, I am automatically suspicious when I hear a south asian accent but as you say Virgin Media customer services appear to be from that part of the world. However, as they are the Worlds Worst customer services I suggest to everyone that you treat them like scammers!

keffie12 · 05/09/2024 18:22

I think you get these whether you have been scammed or not. As soon as I know or it comes up as potentional scam call, I hang up, use the ''who rung me'' service on Google, and delete.

The funniest one I had is going back many years to when my 3rd son was 21. He is now 35 so...

This gentleman of shall we say ''foreign persuasion'' rang our house landline (My God we still used landlines a bit then - eek! How terrible quiant. Ha)

I answered and he asked for my son, by his first and second name. I said he wasn't in and could I help him.

He started going on about this debt my son had run up some years before and they had finally tracked him down and wanted payment. I knew it was a scam. I just let him talk.

When he had finished I said ''Really, that's interesting. Firstly I am his mom. 2ndly you have just broken the data protection act and 3rdly that is not feasiable because when you say this debt is owed my son was only 14 going into 15 at the time.

He said ''Bye'' and promptly hung up LOL It was so funny. It took me ages to tell them all what had happened as I was too busy laughing.

There has been other funnies since. That is the funniest of them all.

Personally I wouldn't worry about that - like you say, they can't even identify your exact address from postcode alone. I suspect she wanted to know where you are and decided you are too far away, but too wimpy to just say that.

diddl · 05/09/2024 18:36

Some of these stories are quite funny but on the whole I just don't get why people bother to engage.

Britinme · 05/09/2024 19:18

I don't know if this is true, but I was told that if anybody asks if you are (yourname) you shouldn't say "yes" but "it is" because there are scammers who can copy your voiced "yes" and insert it into something agreeing to some arrangement you had no idea about as "proof" that it you agreed to it.

DisabledDemon · 05/09/2024 20:29

Is the Windows scam still a thing? You'd get a terribly polite young man who would tell you that due to problems with the operating system on your PC they would need to take control of it to deal with the issue.

I'd put on my best confused, old lady voice and say 'My windows? There's a problem with my windows?

Them: Yes, now if you'd just let us take control of your PC, we can solve this issue for you.'

Me: But I don't see how my windows can affect my computer.

Them: It's your operating system. There's a fault with it.

Me: But I still don't see how my windows can affect my computer. I only had them double-glazed last month.

This usually resulted in the phone being banged down in the other end. Ahh, hours of harmless fun!

I got called a f'ing liar when I got a call years ago to say I had been in a car accident! Ermmm no I haven't
Yes you have
Er no I haven't! I don't even drive
Him then calling me a fing lair and hung up on me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

treacledan71 · 05/09/2024 20:35

Not a scam but I got a call to ask if I wanted life assurance. Explained because of a current condition I can't get a new policy and stick with my current one. They then asked me if I wanted to plan my funeral with them if I was ill lol.

Pelsall116 · 05/09/2024 21:03

I had a call from someone purporting to be from my bank saying that they suspected a fraudulent use of my card and quoted a purchase I had not made. Very well spoken and professional sounding man, but he said that they had blocked my card and in order to unblock I would need to use my card reader. I know that this is not how my bank operate so declined, at which point he said to me, "are you telling me how to do my fing job? You fing cow! you f*ing fat cow!" and hung up. I had about 4 of those calls in a short while, the one I have just described was the last, never heard from that particular scammer again!

Arraminta · 05/09/2024 21:27

We had the broadband scam where a woman with a strong foreign accent tried to tell us our broadband was being upgraded so we needed to give bank details so they could increase our direct debit.

Unfortunately for her, DH studied computer science at university and has a nerdish obsession about obtaining the best possible speed/band width etc. He was delighted to chat to her at length about his thoughts on various service providers and how the whole system could be improved. I think at some point she probably started crying before finally hanging up in despair.

My thought is "what if the scammer is a slave?" Being kidnapped, imprisoned illegally, and forced to call people unpaid would be bad enough without someone giving your grief about it.
