Well it was a lot shorter than the Barclays scam that went on for days even when I told them I was in oncology having chemo they scammed £9000 out of me and, thanks to you lot I got it back. This time he called asking if I paid for postage from Evri in reply to an email Evri sent saying they couldn’t deliver. I went into that email and filled it all in but never paid the delivery. He told me it was a scam and they need to send me a new card. I said well the parcel has still turned up and I’m not interested in a new card I use my phone anyway and I will call you back. His reply? F you and put the phone down. Honestly, they are relentless.

Yup - I also work on the principle that if its important enough, they will find you.

Perhaps the reason it’s hard to get to speak to your doctor is because they’ve had to go round to your house to post a note through your door to tell you that your platelets are dangerously low because they can’t get through to you on the phone ?

I had a scam where they WhatsApped me pretending to be one of my dds saying she'd broken her phone & needed £££ transferred now to buy a new one. First of all I thought it might be real so I said "OK I'll do it later, do you want to watch some TV?" to which they replied Yes! I then said "which dd is this?" and they didn't reply & blocked me. I'm still waiting for them to come & watch TV with me 1 year on .....🤣

Haha! DP got told to fuck off when the Postcode Lottery phoned him to tell him he'd won (we don't play), and asked him for his post code. He said that surely as the postcode lottery they'd know that, cue the 'fuck off' and hang up. Hilarious.

They send an emergency vehicle - happened to a couple of people I know at different times for different reasons - they both got taken to hospital

I might be reading this wrong, but it sounds like you might have given your details to another scammer? I got a scammy text from evri this week. They seem to hit at the lucrative times of xmas and back to school times. They know almost everyone will be expecting a parcel.

A vulnerable family member falls for these scams again and again, just seeming to fly under their radar.

This.

You need to change your email address OP.

Panama2 · 04/09/2024 17:17

I got told they hoped I would die!

Solonga · 04/09/2024 17:17

I have my phone on block unknown callers, anyone that I want to ring me is named. All GP surgery stuff come through the app, not that I have visited the GP anyway.

PerkingFaintly · 04/09/2024 17:18

Oh I'm so relieved for you that you got your money back from that scam, @EachandEveryone .

I nearly cried for you when I read your original OP. I was so pleased that you'd posted, and that MNers came hurtling on to to alert you to what was going on and say it wasn't too late to report it to your bank.

Thank heavens it had a happy ending - though awful you had to go through it. Here's a celebratory Brew

Pretty sure his name wasn’t really Mark either

Mine was in a thick foreign accent 'Hello. My. Name. Is. Barbara White'.
I replied that it was an unusual name for a man. 'What?'
Phone hastily taken over by another man. 'Hello, my name is John Marshall'.
I said that I wanted to talk to Barbara. He hung up.

This has me in stitches!

I had that one, both my dc were sitting in the cinema with me waiting for the trailers to start. I told them if their phone had broken it would have been easier to tell me verbally, not via their invisible friends phone number

I had a call recently asking me about the debt advice I'd recently looked into. I really had so assumed it was genuine, thanked the caller and said I'd sorted my debts. Which was true. He replied "fuck you then" and hung up. Shock

And the other one I get a lot is a South African woman calling to ask about my life insurance. Which I don't have. When I tell her I don't she says it's probably part of my mortgage. Which I also don't have. Then she tries claiming it's linked to my bank account at which point I hang up and block the number. Not that that helps as the call will come in again a few weeks later from a different number.

Wait, so Chase fraud called and said your card is compromised and you need a new one, and you said no because you use your phone?

Your card is linked to your phone. You’re still using your bank card when you use your phone.

gardenmusic - Maybe 'Barbara White' was a man identifying as a woman and you offended them🙄

Oh God no, you might have misgendered her. How awful.

I seem prone to getting that one too. It doesn't matter how many times I just hang up and/or block the number, it comes again before too long. 🙄😠

I did chuckle at the man called Barbara White earlier in the thread. 🤣🤣

diddl · 04/09/2024 17:30

What was the Barclay's scam?

Toastcrumbsinsofa · 04/09/2024 17:36

When I answer the phone, if I hear a call centre in the background or someone asking ‘how are you today, madam’ I play the recorder (London’s burning or Hot cross buns) to them, which makes them hang up very quickly!

Faceplantagain · 04/09/2024 17:37

I'm about 99% confident that High Court Balliffs don't phone up saying that they'll be round in 10 minutes, get increasingly angry with my attempts to argue with them and end the conversation by calling me a "posh bitch". They still haven't turned up, and its been over a week.

Keekabooyou · 04/09/2024 17:40

@MrTiddlesTheCat
😂

samarrange · 04/09/2024 17:42

When someone calls claiming to be from my bank, I ask them to tell me the balance of my current account. Most of the time they hang up, but sometimes it actually is the bank.

Last time it was a new account manager calling to say hello and when I asked him why I should believe that this mobile number was indeed that of a bank employee (and so, please tell me the balance of my account), he said "Wow, good point, but do you know, nobody's ever asked me to prove it before". 😲

MrTiddlesTheCat · 04/09/2024 14:44

I had it the other way round. A foreign sounding bloke rang right in the middle of me watching Scam Interceptors. He said he was from the Office of the European Commission and wanted to confirm bank details to make a payment to DH. Took all of my polite English conditioning to not tell him to 'fuck offf you scamming bastard'. But I succeed and told him he'd have to speak to DH directly. Which was fortuitous as it turned out he wasn't a scamming bastard and was who he said he was.

Hilarious

My elderly folks were recently nearly taken in by the Amazon phone scam, and almost divulged their information, until it suddenly occurred to them that they don’t have an account and I do all of their Amazon shopping for them. They were laughing about it, but I’ve now got their log in details for email (with their approval and LPA) so that I can delete any scams before they get them. They just keep telling me that they feel too old for this world with the speed of change and the opportunities to exploit them.

The problem is that real banks do phone them immediately ask for information. Mine did this the other day. It felt a bit wrong as they'd phoned me and immediately said they need to run a security check, what's my address, date of birth, phone number, previous surname etc. It was a genuine (although unexpected) call about a mortgage application. They didn't ask for any account numbers or pins though.

X bank phoned me 28 times one weekend, refused to tell me which department they were until I identified myself. Er no, you called me.

Complained and got £150 I think in compensation.

When I get obvious scammers, I ask them to wait, and go and get my whistle and blow really fucking hard, and yes I know it can damage their ear, but I don't fucking care they are trying to steal from me and people who are vulnerable.
