Good evening all Smile

I'm back just for this thread. If you see me elsewhere on MN please tell me to stay on the Starmer sycophants thread 😂

I need to discuss just how Robert "paint over murals" Jenrick is the favourite for Tory leader Confused

DuncinToffee · 04/09/2024 22:22

Cassie! We missed you

Social care. I dont believe any government will dare lift the lid on the absolute disgrace that purports to be 'care' in this country. Even when it was clear to everyone when Covid happened, its back under the covers again. Deregulation. It's what we all want and need isn't it Moggy?

BIossomtoes · 04/09/2024 22:47

Brilliant to see you back Cassie, it hasn’t been the same without you.

newnamethanks · 04/09/2024 22:50

Welcome back Cassie. Have you brought a cat?

Notonthestairs · 04/09/2024 23:15

Good to see you back Cassie

Oh please can our next thread title be something about Starmer's sycophants?

prettybird · 04/09/2024 23:35

I don't think I can be accused of being a Starmer sycophant Confused

itsgettingweird · 05/09/2024 04:56

Nice to see you back Cassie Flowers

Cheguevarahamster · 05/09/2024 05:48

Good to see you back @CassieMaddox .

House of Lords reform begins. A long time coming.

ttps://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/sep/05/ministers-introduce-plans-to-remove-all-hereditary-peers-from-lords?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other

Zonder · 05/09/2024 07:15

I was ardently anti the HoL until the recent government. They managed to stop some really stupid laws from going through and won me over. Happy to get rid of the last lot of hereditary peers but I don't want any more political appointments or friends or family or secret daughters or sisters I just want experts in their field. People with a good understanding of relevant areas who can bring their expertise and wisdom to counter anything crazy a government might try to bring in.

Cheguevarahamster · 05/09/2024 08:19

Agree Zonder . No political appointments and a diverse group of voices, skills and competencies is the way to go. Now to get rid of the bishops.

bombastix · 05/09/2024 08:36

Generally I think HoL works okay except for the hereditary element; the scrutiny is much much tougher than the Commons in reality, the experience and expertise is much greater and the political influence a lot less. Quite frankly you cannot do much to a Lord or Lady because you cannot dangle a political appointment or other plum job as a carrot for good behaviour. They do as they please. There is some political loyalty but it doesn’t count for very much.

The reason HoL has survived when it looks utterly anti democratic is the freedom of its participants. It should not work but it does. I have met lots of them and elected politicians over the years. The more thought and long term thinkers were invariably in the “Upper House” and they were a cut above in terms of brains.

CassieMaddox · 05/09/2024 09:04

It was a reference to the visitor. I don't think we are actually sycophants! I'm a fan though. Love this

(It's a video of PMQs yest)

I am also enjoying the hilarious "leadership" campaign by the opposition. Thank fuck it didn't happen while they were in government. Either Jenrick or Badenoch in opposition will be funny. And probs keep the Tories in the cold for a while.

I was idly musing this morning whether Jenrick was picked to be more appealing to the Conservative membership (who elected Truss over Sunak). Braverman must be fuming.

Plus I think the "Angela Raver" insult is very misjudged. Many of us of a certain age see that as an entirely familiar scenario, makes her seem like an ordinary person. Plus it just reminds me of Govey, off his tits in a club that time.

Hilarious.

Wes Streeting has gone very quiet though.

By luck rather than design?

Maybe Johnson has done us all a favour by exposing the flaws of the HoL appointments.

That link doesn't work @CassieMaddox - yields this error message:

Hmm...this page doesn’t exist. Try searching for something else.

Keir Starmer: "If he carries on pretending everything is fine for ordinary people... they are going to be there for a very, very long time(opposition benches)..." he then goes on to quote Kemi Badenoch on what she said about the winter fuel allowance.

A couple of points.... firstly, there's some extremely good looking cats on here!

I watched Kay Burley interviewing Angela Rayner this morning, and I have to say... she came across really well. Her answering questions about the Ibiza rave (why should she?) was great, a mixture of self deprecating and serious. I think she's the perfect balance as Deputy with Keir's seriousness.

Lastly, on HoL... has anyone been reading that 'Baroness Owen (AKA Charlotte Owen) has media pieces in Ireland and elsewhere stating she is Johnson's daughter. Apparently, over here, it is overrun with super injunctions and can't be reported. I cannot confirm the veracity of this.

Ooh! I hadn't seen that about Owen. Since when is reporting on nepotism banned? Angry

prettybird · 05/09/2024 09:28

I know that @CassieMaddox Smile - it just shows how little that visitor "knows" us! Confused

Good to see you back and lovely chilled out cats! Grin

DuncinToffee · 05/09/2024 09:29

Her name is trending on twitter (again) along with posts saying that Private Eye hasn't printed a word about her

@Peston says he was surprised by how many MPs left the Commons before the prime minister's statement on the Grenfell Inquiry report.

Disgraceful. It pains me to think that some of the new Labour MPs must have been among those who left. And the Grenfell families were there. Victims lives not even worth the courtesy of staying in the chamber and listening to the PM.
