Follow squirrels and who knows where you will end up

Very wise advice.

You end up nuts. Or possibly acorns.
Cat tax attached. I'm convinced he has more than 4 legs in this pic. As an aside, he is doing brilliantly on kidney food and meds, fully his old self.

@MrTiddlesTheCat are those lilies? I thought they are very poisonous to cats. Perhaps they are very good artificial flowers 🙏

They're real. I had no idea that they were poisonous. My cats normally don't bother with them. They're usually too busy trying to pilfer wotsits from DS.

BIossomtoes · 04/09/2024 10:16

Morning all. I feel as if we should get a cat but sadly our older dog is terrified of them. This is my friend’s.

@MrTiddlesTheCat : it's the pollen that's dangerous, apparently especially for orientals Shock

Our cats also don't bother with the flowers, but if I'm worried or am putting them somewhere that they might brush the flowers and then try to clean themselves, I cut off the stamens.

Dh hates the smell of lilies (especially stargazer) so I don't often have them in the house, but sometimes they come in a bouquet.

Zonder · 04/09/2024 10:33

I had some lillies recently and put them on a high counter away from our cat, who doesn't jump up much on anything these days. I walked in to the room to find her up on the counter standing right next to them. Dumb cat!

RobinStrike · 04/09/2024 10:39

No animals here. A peaceful view in Trondheim for you instead.

I I was allowed a cat, I'd have this one ... it must be in my misc album for a reason.

Grenfell Tower Inquiry

All deaths in the fire were 'avoidable'

InMySpareTime · 04/09/2024 11:36

I grew up very near Grenfell, I got the train to school from the station next to there. It's weird seeing it all wrapped up when visiting my parents.

So the plan is working then. (see also: Post Office, infected blood, thalidomide).

I suspect government departments have some sort of "dodge the outcomes" trophy they award annually. A little akin to pass the parcel, the unluckiest one finally has to deal with something on their watch.

Remember it's over 50 years and counting for the Northern Ireland cases to be settled. 7 years is a mere blink of an eye.

And that's before you get to things like Diego Garcia which are settled, but the government of the day (all parties) just ignores it.

HannibalHeyes · 04/09/2024 12:22

Cat not impressed.

Grenfell is depressing. The accountability will be zero I should think. One of the countless times where the state spends a lot of money and expertise investigating after the event. I do not think it is very impressive that whatever standards of inquisition we have afterwards, actual regulations, building standards, project management, local government, contractors don’t operate to much higher standards beforehand.

Dog duty paid - Malcolm in the lookout for unruly squirrels!

prettybird · 04/09/2024 14:06

I think what's really sad about the Grenfell report - from the brief reading I've done of the conclusions- is that it says the "Government" has known since 1991 that there were potential problems Shock

So, Labour, Conservatives and Conservative-LibDem governments Angry

The creed that seems to have been established is knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing. It's actually how dh and I first got talking (in 1993): a mutual frustration that most competitive tendering doesn't actually look at the value of what was being offered. Confused

And certainly not the value of people's lives Sad

Labour had a chance to change that culture in the 13 years that they were in power, but didn't HmmAngry

InMySpareTime · 04/09/2024 14:28

There's an interesting podcast on BBC Sounds about Grenfell and what led to it, I found it very informative:

Patel is out of the Tory leadership race.

Did Starmer really keep calling Sunak "the Prime Minister" at PMQs today. Eek! 🙈

Lovely tax contributions!

MamaCat: I've listened very carefully, Kemi, and I have to say it's still a "no" from me.

With a great addition of a side eye 😂
