Catching up with the news. What a catalogue of failure, greed & complacency . Businesses deliberately misleading customers and putting lives at risk.

But yes as prettybird says from the Knowsley Heights fire in 1991 onwards Governments should have taken action to save lives. There was a direct warning from the Enviroment and Transport Committee in 1999 which went unheeded.
The Times reporting seems to focus a bit on the Department of Communities and Local Government in 2016 and also the desire for deregulation. Then there is the local council and the tenant association. It is just a catalogue of people that didn't care about fire safety or the people at risk.

I can't imagine how frightening it all must be to those still living in buildings with the same/similar cladding. I was in a house fire as a child and the fear of it has never left me.

Well Kemi Badenoch is not popular with her colleagues; why that might be?

Jenrick and Cleverly in the final two I think.

Notonthestairs · 04/09/2024 17:36

Will certainly be interesting to see where Patel's supporters go next.

I expected Stride to have been knocked out first.

prettybird · 04/09/2024 17:38

Ds is now denying he ever predicted Patel Wink

I think Badenoch and Jenrick will pick up most of Parel's votes. The interesting point will be whether the MPs really want Badenoch in the final two. I suspect dear Kemi might be more popular with the membership than she is with her colleagues.

prettybird · 04/09/2024 17:44

Jenrick and Cleverly in the final 2? With the cartoon-painter-over-because-you-can’t-make-things-too-nice-for-refugee-children winning? Because the Conservatives are so full of heart Hmm

bombastix · 04/09/2024 17:54

My money is on Jenrick to win! Not a personal preference but based on my knowledge of Conservatives.

I have been successful with my guess the last five times. Let’s see if. I can go six!

SerendipityJane · 04/09/2024 18:00

Who cares who wins ? (There could be a slogan in that).

They will never be Prime Minister.

In other news, it's interesting that since Boris Johnson was Prime Minister, people feel a lot less proud about being British. Something tells me the Tories won't be pursing that line of attack very much.

RobinStrike · 04/09/2024 18:07

I agree with @prettybird. It will be Jenrick and Cleverly for final two, and Jenrick to win. Unfortunately. But then I can't say any of them appeal as having integrity and honesty. I don't have to like their politics but it would be good to see an honourable person in post.

I find it hard to credit that the Conservative membership might elect Badenoch. What am I missing that makes her so appealing? I'm guessing it will be Nasty Robert.

I was wondering, after saying on the last thread that I did acknowledge that there have been a lot of decent Tory MPs, why none of them are anywhere to be seen in this leadership contest. It's because most were booted out, isn't it?

ilovesooty · 04/09/2024 18:21

But one can certainly see Nasty Robert prevailing. I do care actually. I think it helps if government have a credible opposition. I think you'd struggle to get one with those candidates though.

Zonder · 04/09/2024 18:23

The few decent Tory MPs left wouldn't touch it worth a bargepole I guess.

So would I if I could get away with it. Sadly I said it as recently as Sunday and there were several witnesses.

This is the LIbDems chance to shine.

Yep, easy words from all of them. I’ve no doubt most of them mean them but somewhere there is another Grenfell, PO, infected blood scandal waiting to erupt and no amount of apologies after the fact will make up for inaction happening right now.

itsgettingweird · 04/09/2024 20:39

Well said saucery

I believe I'm sorry when you act straight away when attention is brought to something.

But 1991 they've known about this.

Subsequent governments have presided over non action and 72 people paid the ultimate price Angry

There's a car park operator scandal brewing- I'm up to my neck in trying to hold them to account. Our new Labour MP is now involved so watch this space.
