I listened to Rayner being interviewed by JOB on LBC this morning. She was asked about the number of Labour MPs who left the chamber rather than listen to the PM's statement on Grenfell.
She started off well, saying she couldn't answer for why they might have left but she herself had stayed because it was a serious issue. She should have left it there; it was an acceptable and sufficient answer.
But she then went on to come up with hypothetical, spurious and weak excuses as to why they might have left. For example: "they maybe wanted to go and read the report" nothing stopping them doing that after the PM's statement
, there was a big influx of new MPs and not being used to going through large reports, yada, yada, yada
