Yes. I am currently dentistless. That would be quite good to know what the plan for that is.

Evenstar · 12/09/2024 21:36

I have just had to accept that NHS dentistry doesn’t exist here, I moved in 2023 having not been able to see my NHS dentist since before the pandemic only to discover that there was nowhere in the whole county to register with an NHS dentist. I am now registered privately and it has cost me in the region of £500 so far for registration, two fillings and a hygienist appointment.

I am very fortunate to be able to afford this, but through my voluntary work at church I know many young mums who have not been able to access the free dental treatment they are entitled to. It is an appalling state of affairs, but there are so many problems that I fear restoring a proper dental service is probably some way down the list.

prettybird · 12/09/2024 21:39

Not wanting to rub it in but dh and I registered with new NHS dentists close to us (walking distance) earlier this year (our old dentist had retired and although the practice was taken over, it was in the centre of town close to where we used to live and no longer convenient). Ds and his girlfriend are also going to register there. There was another practice close by which another friend recommended which also has spaces.

Dh is really wary of dentists but was very happy with the work she did (2 ot 3? extractions of molars, multiple fillings and 2 replacement caps he hadn't been to see a dentist before Covid Hmm).

I know there are some areas of Scotland where there is a lack of dentists though.

RafaistheKingofClay · 12/09/2024 21:59

SW is screwed for dentistry. I think the last time I looked the nearest dentist to me that takes nhs patients was 4hrs away and not in the SW.

Notonthestairs · 12/09/2024 22:04

My kids have NHS dentistry (1 in local hospital unit which caters for the disabled and special needs) and I am incredibly grateful for that. I have had to go private, DH has a work plan which helps him.

Given how key oral health is I worry for the problems that are being stored up for people.

NEW: Keir Starmer confirmed to me that there is no impact assessment of removing winter fuel allowance from all pensioners. Pushed on why, he said there is no legal need for one adding: “I know you think there’s a report on my desk but there isn’t one”.

Dh had to get his extractions sorted at least 4 weeks before his hip operation, to mitigate the risk of infections.

Given that the Treasury wonks have supposedly been pushing this policy for years I'd be amazed if there wasn't a previous report commissioned. Particularly given it was in the Conservative 2017 manifesto.

RafaistheKingofClay · 12/09/2024 22:15

Quite. I’d also be surprised if it was carried out without an impact assessment.

Do you know what's weird? The older I get the more triggering these things are. You'd think it would be the opposite but no. It brings back memories of the fear that seemed so normal at the time.

Yes. I am currently dentistless. That would be quite good to know what the plan for that is.

Streeting said pre election, the plan was for a teeth brushing program for children and more emg appointments, he also met with the BDA in July.

So far nothing i've heard is different.

We need continuing dental treatment, not a plastic filling and/or an extraction, which is what you can get now in some areas of the SW.

Given recent statements on No more money, i'm not hopeful they will do anything at all, Blair didn't and he had a lot more money back then.

I think one huge problem is that the people we elect have too much money, & privilege, the problems many people have in this country don't really register with them.

I think as one gets older and sees the difference in society compared to our youth one appreciates more what's at risk.

Not meaning to trivialise, but I watched the Freddie Mercury film with my 13 year old the other day. Trying to explain to him what life was like for gay people in the AIDS pandemic, how society viewed it, even about what it was like for gay people at my school was hard. He couldn't even really get that anyone would think being gay should be banned. It made me realise how far we've come in 30 years and how much we could easily lose.

I hope the Finucane family get justice. One of the worst things about Brexit was the deliberate choice to throw NI under the bus imo Sad

Mostly insults at being caught out and something about the pound dollar currency.

I see you are being told to stick to your own threads, rattled much Grin

Zonder watch out with your emoji. Some posters really hate them enough to complain to MNHQ. Just a tip.

Zonder · 13/09/2024 08:49

Shame, I love a good emoji 😇

Yes I really should go on the threads I'm told to!

prettybird · 13/09/2024 08:59

I don't know what you mean about emojis Wink

So far, I've never been deleted - but I do word "challenging" Wink posts very carefully Grin

I find it really hard as I use emoji all the time. And gifs

Anyone seen @piggywaspushed? I hope she's OK

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/crackdown-on-intimate-image-abuse-as-government-strengthens-online-safety-laws

Social media companies will have to proactively remove and prevent intimate image abuse including deepfakes from their platforms, or face fines.
Government is strengthening the Online Safety Act to make it a priority offence, as serious as selling weapons and drugs online.

Up until 2 years ago I think I had been deleted twice- once for calling a would be hunt saboteur a cunt for planning to hide in bushes and jump out at horses to scare them. I accept that calling them a cunt wasnt in the spirit of mnet, but would stand be my opinion (and reworded it at the time). I also word carefully most of the time.

Over the last 2 years I've been deleted many more times for much more innocuous posts, and in one case, something I had been typing for years on a particular subject. It appears robust debate is not welcomed in some quarters.

Same. I've been here 15 years, never been deleted til the last couple and in the last few months I've been temp banned a few times.

It's really frustrating, I think not name changing means posters recognise the name and are a bit quicker to report when they are offended.

Would hate to be a moderator though, as it must get really tough.
