Do you hail from Utah OP?

borntobequiet · 01/09/2024 14:42

I let fallen leaves blow into the hallway and form picturesque drifts up against the skirting board, very naturalistic.

Who the fuck has convinced people they have to buy tat to decorate for each season?

Is it that Dunelm?
Do I has to have a word?

Oi... Dunelm... Nooooo...

🤪

Still summer till 22nd

It’s definitley autumn here today and looking at the forcast it ain’t changing. But other than looking for my slippers I’m not doing anything different.

gardenmusic · 01/09/2024 14:43

It's 28 degrees here today - autumnal yesterday!
I will be doing some minor autumnal things over a couple of weeks. I always have fresh flowers, so will be going more orangy yellow there.
I will be having some conkers in bowls (keeps the spiders, of which I have plenty, down)
I have tried to preserve some rose hip fronds, so if that works they will be going into vases along the dining table.
I have some autumnal coloured throws which I will get out and dot about - functional, we need them as autumn deepens. We are north facing. They are just throws, tucked away in the summer.
The garden will do it's own thing - the previous owner planted it so that there was seasonal interest, for which I am eternally grateful, and will cut a bit for the house.
I have some lovely autumnal smelling candles from the White Company, and I will have those for the evening - I am still using sweetpea, but it is beginning to smell 'wrong'. Decorative? Don't know. They will go into the same hurricane lamps as all the other candles.

For the naysayers, your idea of decor may be plastic tat, mine isn't, and I will enjoy 'decorating for autumn.' Stop pissing on other people's enjoyment and hobbies.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 01/09/2024 14:43

How does one decorate for autumn?
What does this decoration involve?
This is all new to me and I'm 50!
Is it an English/Welsh or Irish thing?
I'm Scottish and don't know anyone who decorates for the seasons, with Christmas being the exception. 😁

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 01/09/2024 14:44

I actually like the idea OP! As long as it's high quality stuff, why not? A couple of real gourds on the mantelpiece, a throw in autumnal colours on the sofa, maybe swap out a picture or 2 for autumn scenes and switch to 'pumpkin spice' type candles. You don't need to go nuts weaving orange leaf garlands around the banisters. Personally I only get round to decorating for Christmas around the 15th Dec, and then can't be bothered to take it all down til February! But one day, when I'm a grown-up and perfectly organised at all times, I'll decorate for autumn too!

Miffylou · 01/09/2024 14:44

"Decorate for autumn"?? Blimey.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 01/09/2024 14:19

Here are some of them, not quite displayed properly, yet. We made about half a dozen last year, along with some felted toadstools. This week I'm going to felt some acorns and conkers.

(They are currently sitting on top of a whole frame of honey in a glass box, in case anyone is wondering. It's for our stall at our village scarecrow Festival next weekend)

They're adorable 😊
I do like the idea of having seasonal decorations but living in a small house we don't have the room to store them. I've always fancied an Easter tree.

Pluvia · 01/09/2024 14:46

Waitingfordoggo · 01/09/2024 14:02

Aye. And no wonder the planet is fucked.

Yes to both of these. COL crisis, young people unable to afford to leave home, the planet heating up — so let's buy more plastic tat made in China...

justflewinfromthewindycity · 01/09/2024 14:01

It makes me happy when the nights start drawing in.
Nice candle burning, nice throw and cushions
Few little pumpkins
Lots of sad things in the world ...don't think it hurts anyone

Don't pumpkins go off?

I don't get it.

SunnieShine · 01/09/2024 14:46

justflewinfromthewindycity · 01/09/2024 13:53

No I'm not American.
I just put a nice throw out and candles and I've got a few nice pumpkins and diffuser's.
It just makes me happy
My late mum used to do it when I was little just to make the house cosy (changing cushions etc )
There wasn't anything out in the 90s like now but it's just a little tradition I've carried on.

Nothing crazy like the influencers where everything is pumpkins

That sounds lovely. I don't know why people are being so snotty. Next duvet change I'll be getting my lovely autumn duvet set out. 🍁

gardenmusic · 01/09/2024 14:47

Do other people you know do this? Changing curtains and the doormat, I find that astonishing!

I change my curtains from the summer light floral ones to the winter thickly lined ones. The heating bills would be sky high otherwise. Same two sets of curtains about 10 years now. What is odd about that?

greengreyblue · 01/09/2024 14:48

Decorate for autumn? I don’t . But it’s 24 c where I am and I’m sitting in the garden in the sun so not feeling very autumnal at all.

Ted27 · 01/09/2024 14:48

@TuesdayWhistler

Fortunately for me I have a real life hedgehog who visits my kitchen to snaffle the cat food.
When he's feeling particularly friendly he comes and has a snooze behind the sofa. He has a very sweet snore.

On a wider point, is this why people have big houses- to store all the seasonal decorations and multiple curtains, cushions and throws?

Barney16 · 01/09/2024 14:48

I was flirting with getting the teddy bedding out but it's boiling here so not yet. I love September and October, favourite time of the year but that's because it's warm. Usually. Fingers crossed.

gardenmusic · 01/09/2024 14:49

Yet another thing for already stressed mums to worry that they're not doing properly, by the sound of things.

No one is forcing them! A few warm throws make sense. If you can afford them, having 2 sets of curtains makes sense.

Clafoutie · 01/09/2024 14:50

Meadowfinch · 01/09/2024 13:48

Sorry OP, we shouldn't take the Mick.

My dm used to have winter curtains and summer curtains, always swapped over in autumn half term and at Easter.

It used to drive me batty. I wasted holiday after holiday up step ladders. 🙄

😆

Iusedtobeapenguin · 01/09/2024 14:51

I do this OP, if it makes you happy what's the harm? I'm not feeling it yet as it's still warm & sunny here on the south coast - I will prob give it till late September. For me it's about making the house more cosy rather than 'decorating' as such. So draping some fairy lights around, getting out winter throws for the sofas, stacking up the log baskets for the open fire & stove etc. I do Halloween decs for the DC but they're only up for a few days. My family is from the US so I do have that excuse 😁....and my relatives that live over there always get me inspired with their gorgeous Fall decorations.

This explains everything Grin

I don't really decorate for autumn because my part of the UK doesn't have very defined seasons, however I prefer it to Christmas stuff starting already! I was in a department store a week or two ago and they already had their "Christmas shop." I wonder if it's for the tourists but still.

It’s Decorative Gourd Season, Motherfuckers

JaninaDuszejko · 01/09/2024 13:57

I think @justflewinfromthewindycity is getting a hard time. How many people here buy bunches of daffodils in the spring or plant bulbs in pots for an indoor display or get cyclamen or poinsettia for Christmas or have a bowl of horse chestnuts or pinecones sitting out from walks with their kids in autumn or have some flowers for cutting in their garden? It doesn't have to be about plastic tat.

But all the people "getting out" their wreaths, garlands, pumpkins etc are getting it out from storage, so it will be plastic crap.
Of course it's nice to have a bowl of shiny conkers or cones, but they're natural and can be composted at home or put in green bin. When the plastic tat lovers tire of their fake wreaths they'll end up in landfill.

greengreyblue · 01/09/2024 14:52

I have throws out all year, folder on end of sofa for any night I feel chilly in ANY season. I sleep in white Egyptian cotton in ANY season. MN is a weird place sometimes. Makes me reaslise how marketing works so well. Sell a few orange wreaths in The Range and some sap will buy it . As if the commercial hype around Halloween and Christmas and Easter isn’t enough!

My Mum used to change the curtains. I only have one set that has to do for every season! The doormat gets changed when it's worn out

Blimey, this thread reads as competition as to who can be the biggest snidey bitch to the OP.

Tulipsareredvioletsarebue · 01/09/2024 14:54

A fun thread full of fun sponges...

If I had a house with a patio/porch I would so be doing it!

Iusedtobeapenguin · 01/09/2024 14:54

Not understanding all the piss-taking tbh 🤷‍♀️
