I don't but I love people that do.

What about Halloween? Do your autumn decs get taken down or added to?

When do Christmas ones go up?

I might get an autumn wreath for the door as they look great and then 1st dec swap for a Xmas one. The problem is the wind gets it and knocks on the door which scares the dog which in turn makes us jump. Any tips?

OneSugar1 · 01/09/2024 14:28

Thanks for the reminder. I’ll be decorating for autumn by putting the weatherproof covers over the patio furniture 👍

NagathaCrispy · 01/09/2024 14:28

What exactly do you do to "decorate for autumn?" .... totally mystified. This is not something which would occur to me at all.

It makes me happy when the nights start drawing in.
Nice candle burning, nice throw and cushions
Few little pumpkins
Lots of sad things in the world ...don't think it hurts anyone

Couldn’t agree more. Anything that makes us smile can’t be bad. I have a few bits and pieces I’ve collected over the years, which we will probably put out in October, heading towards Halloween. My children love it too. I spend a lot of time at home and it’s nice to switch things up through the year!

Gettingbysomehow · 01/09/2024 14:29

1st September. I love everything about autumn.

I ventured into TKMaxx last week, it was full of Autumn decorations.
I nearly bought towels and tea towels with harvest designs and then I had a sharp word with myself.

I also went into TK Maxx last week and gaped in delighted awe at all the autumnal and/or Halloween decorations. I too had a sharp word with myself and came home empty-handed there was a bloody lovely blown-glass pumpkin ornament though.

florasl · 01/09/2024 14:30

Today! I grew up with festive decorating in America and it was always so lovely seeing all the houses decorate. The whole neighbourhood used to get involved!

1st September. I love everything about autumn.

Except knowing when it starts..

🤪🤣

lemonyellows · 01/09/2024 14:31

All of bit odd. Assuming for social media

It is still very warm right now regardless, so hardly autumnal.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/09/2024 14:08

Yes, outer SW London. I was going to sit in the garden but it’s too hot!

It's really hot in Central London today, I've just walked through Bank and it's baking.

I think that there are still a few summery weeks to come and that we won't be feeling autumnal in London until the end of the month

TuesdayWhistler · 01/09/2024 13:27

Who the fuck has convinced people they have to buy tat to decorate for each season?

Is it that Dunelm?
Do I has to have a word?

Oi... Dunelm... Nooooo...

🤪

Still summer till 22nd

@TuesdayWhistler
Thank you - I'm literally crying here!!

FFS! Some people have way too much time on their hands and too much disposable income, and I presume storage space for quarterly 'refreshing' of seasonally appropriate decor. 😂

SmileyHappyPeopleInTheSun · 01/09/2024 14:34

Do for Halloween - one day and evening and it is cheap tat brought when kids were young and dragged out every year - plus we do pumpkins outside.

Kind of okay but slightly sad very like my own parents Christmas decorations - oddly DSis and I go all out for Christmas especially when kids were young- and now suspect my own DC will for Halloween.

We do observed 5th November in garden now when kids were younger did big displays outside but no decorations for that.

More practical stuff - extra duvets - curtains back up and winter coats and hats out - happen as needed.

joolsella · 01/09/2024 14:34

Shops invented this to get people to buy tacky crap in various shades of orange or brown

Don't do it

Mesoavocado · 01/09/2024 14:34

Do what now? What on earth is that?
I mean trying to keep the heating off until October is the game plan for September

Longdarkcloud · 01/09/2024 14:35

@Expo23 , OP and others who decorate by season: Where do you store all your stuff off-season? I take it you are rich and have houses much larger than the average? The average UK house is the smallest in Europe and storage is barely adequate for essentials. I feel that Charity shops do so well for stock here because the average householder is compelled to off load possessions there is no room to store for future use. And hence the reason few garages are used for cars.

Chipsahoy · 01/09/2024 14:36

New build garages couldn’t house a car, not the cars most people drive nowadays! Surely they are for storage now?

I have mine stored in one neat plastic box. Old house it went in the attic, this house I have an under stairs cupboard.

MidYearDiary · 01/09/2024 14:36

I know that seasonal door wreaths etc are a thing for some people, but I'm way more intrigued that some people actually change their curtains. I do get that in the past, heavy, lined curtains were a good way of keeping draughts out of cold houses in cold weather, but after the advent of insulation and central heating, I thought this was less likely to have remained a thing. To those who do it, is it a practical thing to save on heating bills, or an aesthetic one?

LuluBlakey1 · 01/09/2024 14:37

I don't know what you are asking about. 'What does 'decorate for autumn' mean?

NinaOakley · 01/09/2024 14:37

I don’t decorate as such, but I’ve just lit an autumnal scented candle. The cosy throws go on the sofa when the evenings get cold. Halloween shit for the kids goes up for the half term holiday.

Frith2013 · 01/09/2024 14:38

Eh?

Hazydetailonlife · 01/09/2024 13:55

I life to waft around in my autumn cloak from the equinox. Anything else would jam my chakra. Be careful OP this is a big decision.

I’m considering JamMyChakra as my next username. I always change it for Autumn, obvs.

Apolloneuro · 01/09/2024 14:40

Expo23 · 01/09/2024 13:19

For me, it is changing some of the curtains to a more seasonal tone that fit autumn and winter (merlot). The throws, cushions and doormat as well. Changing vases and fairy lights. I have a seasonal display in the entrance hall, so that too.

I love this. I bet your house looks lovely.

Somethingsnappy · 01/09/2024 14:40

2chocolateoranges · 01/09/2024 14:02

Decorate for autumn 😂😂😂😂

Never heard of that in my whole 48 years on this earth.

Wow, really? Have you been living in a box all your life?

So many unpleasant replies on this thread, trying to mock the op.

Have you really all never heard of seasonal decorations? You know, something our ancestors have been doing for hundreds/thousands of years, with seasonal flowers, fruit etc? These days we may have upgraded to fabrics etc in addition, but if you'd use these things anyway in day-to-day life, is it really such a problem for people to imagine that other people might like to choose colours to match the season. We're all different, who knew? Rather a lack of imagination on this thread. Not everyone is buying plastic tat etc.

In reply op, I don't usually do this, but I think it's a lovely idea! I guess it starts to feel autumnal to me once I feel a chill in the air, and the colours start to change. I might be tempted to bring a few conkers etc in this year and light a candle. I do have a tiny needle-felt pumpkin, but that stays up all year round!

Topseyt123 · 01/09/2024 14:41

I've never heard of decorating for autumn, or for any other season come to that. I do basic Christmas decorations for a week or so but that's it.

Sounds like bollocks to me.

redtrain123 · 01/09/2024 14:41

I’m another ‘what?’.

I guess I’ll change the duvets to a thicker one when it gets cold, and will swop barbecues for roasts.
