I quite like the idea, I must admit! But I also cba. I'm not sure why some posters assume it would involve constant buying of 'tat'. I use the same Christmas decorations I've used for years and years. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do the same with autumn stuff.

Yes to both of these. COL crisis, young people unable to afford to leave home, the planet heating up — so let's buy more plastic tat made in China...

Curtains or candles are hardly plastic crap made in China.
Jesus Christ, she is decorating her house, this is not gonna impact young people unable to leave their homes, she's also not killing kittens nor dropping bombs or Gaza, which is what you would have believed from posts like yours :/

They're adorable 😊
I do like the idea of having seasonal decorations but living in a small house we don't have the room to store them. I've always fancied an Easter tree.

Go for the Easter tree!

My family is Catholic and Orthodox so Easter was a v. big deal, we would find a branch of birch or pussy willow, put it in a vase and hang my great grandmother's carved wooden Yugoslavian egg baubles and some others collected over the years Easter Smile

Pipecleanerrevival · 01/09/2024 14:58

Dude I haven’t even hoovered since May

Tumbleweed101 · 01/09/2024 14:59

Usually when it starts feeling chilly and dark so end Sept/October. Usually it's getting out throws, candles etc and displays of things we collected like acorns and conkers. Nearer Halloween I put out pumpkins.

Today! I grew up with festive decorating in America and it was always so lovely seeing all the houses decorate. The whole neighbourhood used to get involved!

I wouldn't make a very good American, there seems to be a huge amount of emphasis on doing things for public show and doing what the neighbours do.

My Mum used to change the curtains. I only have one set that has to do for every season! The doormat gets changed when it's worn out

My mother always changed soft furnishings with the seasons and we always had a house filled with seasonal flowers, berries, twigs etc

Lwrenn · 01/09/2024 15:02

Fuck me what a joyless thread.

I decorate my home seasonally, not because some influencer told me, not because I'm a b&m fanatic, but because I absolutely love seasonal experiences.
I love that my table changes for the seasons, some little pumpkins the kids have made me, a few sugar skulls we've painted, different flowers from the garden or clutches pearls some FAKE flowers that I happen to enjoy. I've had the same ones for years, I'm sure the environment will cope with my home making me feel joy.
I don't spend money each year getting new things because I can't afford to, so we have certain decs that now have names, a bit of history to them like my skeleton (known as mr fat bastard) and sparkly bats etc.
I adjust my cooking seasonally, my clothes, my activities and I enjoy that so why not enjoy doing it to my home as well?
Nobody forces anyone else to do it, nobody is winning a prize for "not understanding" why people do things like this. Of course you understand, you just want the superiority of telling people you're not like those plebs who shop the highest highstreet and certainly wouldn't buy tat. Well so fucking what?
Maybe some of us don't have the luxuries of others and to make the most of things we do enjoy a different scented candle for the season.
Maybe some people don't enjoy competitive misery and just want to have things they enjoy in their homes. I like my tacky house with my dodgy disco lights and ikea bed, opposed to the mid century mahogany bureaus and g plan dining tables in their farrow and ball painted rooms brigade who like to remind the less sophisticated posters how we're wasting our money and killing the earth.
Just stop with the bullshit and disingenuous, fake shock people like things you don't. We get it, you're better than us for not buying into a consumerist lifestyle. Well done.

@justflewinfromthewindycity as soon as my kids get back to school it's my autumn table cloth on and my orangey garlands! They're always made up when the autumn stuff comes out because they say they prefer slow cooker meals more than air fryer ones 😂

Another naff American influence.

How rude

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 01/09/2024 15:03

We don't have the money to do anything like this. My 'decorating for autumn' is pulling all my jackets/coats/cloaks out for the colder days

LouH5 · 01/09/2024 15:03

Today!

On 1st September I get out my autumnal candles… pumpkin spice, maple leaf etc etc alongside my cute pumpkin bedding.

And then 1st October I introduce the Halloween candles, black cat, witches spell etc. I also have a cute ceramic pumpkin and a few other bits like that, they’re lovely.

I love this time of year. My house generally is quite Nordic/light…pale wooden floors and white walls with blush pink and light green furnishings. It feels too summery at this time of year so I adore adore adore all of the autumnal touches and scents, to make me feel a little more cosy. Especially as I spend a lot more time at home this time of year, I want it to be nice and seasonal.

And yes, this morning I drank tea out of my new autumnal travel flask and my boyfriend treated me to a pumpkin spice donut from the bakery next door. It makes me happy, and if anyone else thinks it’s a waste of money or twee or pointless… I couldn’t give a damn! 🎃

Boredlass · 01/09/2024 15:04

I have been carefully cutting out paper leaves and moulding papier mache pumpkins since June, I do this to fill my time as I have no real interests, friends or hobbies🙄

Nasty.
Does that apply to all crafters, do you include knitting and embroidery in your sad and friendless assumption? Has it occuried to you that crafting is a hobby?

I still have things that I was given from my elderly neighbours when I moved out of my mums at 16! One of the neighbours gave me a massive box of what is now proper vintage decorations, 70s at least, I love them so much. They're the most kitsch and tacky things you've ever seen.
I'll be buried with them I swear 😂😂

justflewinfromthewindycity · 01/09/2024 15:05

@LouH5 oh I love the flask !

Oo yes you’ll be accused of all sorts 🤣

I do too! I have had a cute black cat one for years, and this year I bought a new glass one with bats on, gorgeous!

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 01/09/2024 13:23

Do other people you know do this? Changing curtains and the doormat, I find that astonishing!

This has reminded me that my GM used to do this, would switch between spring/summer and autumn/winter sofa cover and change her living curtains. Extremely thrifty Scottish woman born in 1907. I had forgotten and it’s nice to remember.

Normallynumb · 01/09/2024 15:06

I've never heard of decorating for autumn, but I guess some would change accessories, warmer throws etc
The most I do is lighting a candle
but if it makes you happy then why not.

I don't even do Xmas decorations now.

Love this @LouH5 it has reminded me that I bought a new oil for my diffuser. I haven't changed all my decor yet as trying to hold summer for another couple of weeks, but I have changed my diffuser oil to pumpkin spice, I love it!
