Is this an American thing ?

I think it's a "more money than sense" thing. I don't know anyone who would spend money on changing their home furnishings four times per year.

I don't. I have actual real things to do in my life, can't imagine any reason why I would want to clutter up our home with a load of old 'autumnal' tat. Autumn will be happening very soon.. get outside into the natural world & enjoy the real thing rather than creating a pastiche in your house!

I tend to change things over around the equinox. I'm not overly spiritual but I like to do it as a nod towards the changing of the seasons and a nod towards the turning of the wheel. I'll change my throws and cushion covers over, and swap the spring/summer bedding for the winter brushed cotton. I don't decorate specifically, but if I see things I like the look of when I'm out and about then I'll display them. Last year there was a tree near me which had the most beautiful foliage when the leaves turned. I collected some of the fallen leaves and put them in a dish.

Love reading all the original posts from people who can’t imagine why anyone would do such a thing. I hope they continue posting rather than just going elsewhere to talk about things that do interest them.

Done yesterday!
I absolutely love autumn and have always loved it and it is a family thing my grandparents used to do... We lived on a farm and we used flowers and pumpkins to make nice displays.
That's not really a thing any more but I love making house cosy for my favourite autumn months....

Gorgeous.

We live in the middle of a climate crisis of humanity's making that endangers every lifeform on this planet and you wonder why some posters challenge the purchase of Yet More Unnecessary Tat to add to the carbon dioxide emissions?

You're on mumsnet being negative so you're not that busy in your life. 😂

You do realise it possible to decorate your house and go outside don't you.

well, I just decided to give TEMU a chance and am trialling a little craft kit to see is it going to reach me or am going to be scammed LOL
so if it works and is real business, I am going to buy few golden coloured bits

Oh it’s a real business. One that uses slave labour and other morally repugnant practices.

1974devon · 02/09/2024 18:47

I've noticed this trend creeping in the last couple of years...all this pumpkin shizzle shazzle...we didn't have pumpkins as a child for Halloween. Used to have a swede 😄
And.dont get me started on the pumpkin patch trend...spend loads to walk around a muddy field and pick a load of pumpkins that just seem to get binned after.the event :(

BackInTheBay · 02/09/2024 18:20

I’m guessing you are in North America. It’s not really a thing elsewhere!

It's definitely a thing where I am in England. Lots of people do it and the shops are full of autumn decorations. We have family and friends all over the U.K. and lots of them do it too.

Great. No doubt without a thought for the many ways in which the additional consumerism is horrific for the environment 🙄

Are you Liberty?

ObieJoyful · 02/09/2024 18:51

Takes me all my energy to clean to a barely acceptable level…

LaughingElderberry · 02/09/2024 18:53

Maybe I'm in a minority, but I don't buy things for this. It's changing around things I already own, in the same way that I wouldn't wear my summer shorts in December, or my winter fleece pyjamas in July.

I'm not a fan of buying stuff unnecessarily, so I'm all for reducing consumption. But it's possible to change things around without buying "stuff".

  1. I, and many other people, don't have space to store it all.
  2. I still don't see a need to own four sets of curtains, four sets of cushions, etc when one set will do.
Once a year, I launder the one set I have.

It's not mandatory though - everyone's different. My "all" is two blankets, six cushion covers and a set of bedding, which go into a vacuum bag.

What? Lol

Lol. I think your carbon footprint would be less without your new car, your trip to Antarctica and your beauty advent calendar....that took me 1 minute on AS. I'm guessing there's a lot more. 🤡

Heyhoitsme · 02/09/2024 19:05

Another American concept. I will not be decorating for autumn.

😂 Brilliant. If people are going to talk about environmental concerns, they need to be doing slightly better themselves before berating others.

Many of the beauty advent calenders aren't cheap either!

But it's ok, as their interests and hobbies don't affect the environment as much as something they don't enjoy 😀

Shufflebumnessie · 02/09/2024 19:18

When I was growing up I remember my mum used to change the curtains and cushions in the lounge at the end of September. She had light floral ones for the summer and heavy, burgundy velvet ones for the winter.

Personally I'd probably do it around the Autumn equinox or 1st October.

I love the look of all the autumnal decor in the shops but we don't need anymore clutter in our house!!

Jazzabel · 02/09/2024 19:19

I’ve never heard of doing this but it sounds fun. Might give it a go. I hate autumn and winter so anything to try and make it more bearable. Don’t get why people are being so snobby about it, the op isn’t telling you that you have to join in.

Decorate for Autumn?! What?!!?!?!?! You can just about get me to decorate for Christmas I won't be decorating for anything else. Never heard of decorating for Autumn though?
I despair at this world. Cheap plastic tat that will be in landfill before long half the time.

Same here - in fact, the Christmas decs in the Demon household have been known to not go up until Christmas Eve!

It's why I started doing it! It always felt a bit shite when I couldn't do much of an evening with my eldest and being stuck in was quite boring.
We didn't have loads of lovely things in shops then because I'm older than the moon but we just started doing it to cheer the evenings up.
It definitely feels cosier and isn't reminding us how we're missing out on summer evenings 😂
