Oh,SE UK corner,10 minutes inland from the sea,30c yesterday, not a puff of wind, felt like I was suffocating. To me the seasons change when the clocks do.

LynetteScavo · 02/09/2024 07:25

This thread has inspired me to big up autumn, so instead on leaving g it till half term
I'm going to go full on harvest festival in October 4th. No more simply taking a few can of beans into work for the food bank collection, I'm going to be creating a harvest wreath and other things I haven't thought of yet.

I honestly don't understand the mean comments on this thread. I love celebrating the seasons and for me autumn means warmer scents in candles and body lotion etc , autumn foliage in vases, heavier throws. I will deffo get some pumpkins closer to Halloween. I love autumn but this year, we've had such a crap summer, I'm not ready for it yet!

Oh I'm the other way round this year. I normally want to cling to the last sunny days. But it seems that ship has long sailed and there will be no more sun, so I'm ready for autumn, when it's meant to be cold.

I don't even think I'd realised it was September when I picked up this thread yesterday, but I did then go and get my box of (wooden and felt, reused every year, for the pearl clutchers) autumn bits and do the mantelpiece and change the wreath. We'll add a few conkers, acorns and pine cones as the weeks go by and I'll add a few Halloween things mid October.

I love seasonal decorations.

Using heavier throws and lighting candles , making heartier meals is not decorating for autumn . That’s just normal human behaviour as the nights draw in and get cooler. Just as opening windows and spring cleaning is rational human behaviour at the other end. Putting up actual decorations is what I am referring to as unusual and relatively new apart from Halloween night.

My user name says it all. Autumn is the start of the misery for me. I loathe it. The clocks going back so it's dark at 4pm, The expense and stress of Christmas really gets to me. The tree stayed undecorated in its pot in the garden last year. The fact that's it's September now and the nights are drawing in makes me sad. If it could be daylight until 8pm every day, I'd be happy. Needless to say I won't be decorating for Autumn and had never heard of it until this thread. Call me a misery guts, but I'm glad to have unloaded!

Solonga · 02/09/2024 08:47

I think it depends where you live to when the Autumn stuff comes out, it's dull here but 20c in Northants, I wouldn't be wanting a throw, I did get my Emma Bridgewater harvest moon mug out though. Where you live OP, 1st September is fine

greengreyblue · 02/09/2024 09:04

My weather app says no lower than 23 all week. Make the most of the last days of summer. Enjoy autumn come October. Why is there always a rush to the next season?

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 02/09/2024 09:08

Definitely feels like autumn in my corner of north east Scotland! I enjoy my Christmas and Easter wreaths, so this year I have bought an autumn one to decorate my front door. I also need to find the box of autumn / harvest themed bits I’ve bought and made over the last few years, and I’ll add some fresh pumpkins / gourds as we go into October. I also love to crochet blankets and throws! The ones currently on my sofa are vibrant summer shades, but I might switch those out for the ones in reds / yellows / oranges.
I really don’t understand the mean comments on this thread though.. it might not be your jam, but putting others down really isn’t in the spirit of the site.

Chipsahoy · 02/09/2024 09:44

Cool and foggy here today.
I feel for those dreading the season. I used to hate it. Have horrible trauma anniversaries throughout. In therapy, slowly, I learned to embrace the season. Because you can’t live for half of a year. You have to find ways to enjoy life when you can. It’s not always possible but to write off half a year is not healthy.
It took years for me and has evolved slowly. Even now, I can feel suffocated a little by the weather at night in autumn, not because I hate it but because it reminds me of being out in middle of night and the things that happened on those nights.
I light my candles. I have my decor. I cook my stews. I plants my bulbs and autumn flowering plants. I sweep leaves. I walk my dogs and I breathe. Because even though sometimes I feel I might suffocate on the memories, there is still beauty to be found. I refuse to live a half life. So I embrace it.

Besttimelftheyear · 02/09/2024 09:52

Gosh people are being really mean and sneery.

I decorate the house for Autumn op.

For anyone wondering. This means getting out a fluffy throw or two from the airing cupboard. I have some pumpkin ornaments and candle holders that I put around.

Closer to Halloween (few days before) the Halloween decorations come out, again just a few things.

I have a small plastic tub which I store in the loft with my 'Autumn/Halloween) things and they will keep going for years to come.

It isn't stressful because there is no pressure to do it, I enjoy it and it makes me happy. My youngest dc loves it too.

People like different things. I bet plenty of people sneering love their evening gin or bottle of wine, or their weekly takeaway, or shopping for clothes. I get enjoyment from homeware.

We love walking round the neighbourhood looking at the Halloween decorations too. Some people go all out. It brings a bit of light to what could be a gloomy season.

I started doing this about 5 years ago. Yes I probably did get 'influenced' by Instagram. I love homeware, I absolutely love Christmas decorations and have since I was a child.

Lifestooshort71 · 02/09/2024 09:54

Is a throw the same as my blankie that lives on the sofa throughout the year for chilly feet?

Besttimelftheyear · 02/09/2024 10:14

I think you'd have to be walking around with your eyes closed to not know that Autumn decor is available.

There are displays in nearly all homeware shops and supermarkets. Matalan had a big display in their window. Next do too, plus the supermarkets.

Why all the faux surprise and ridicule?

Do you have SAD?
If so have you tried the lamps especially for it? I believe it's awful to struggle with x

Lucky you. We’ve had frost in the am this week…..
And yes in England, not in Scotland.
So yes, leaves are starting to turn yellow. It’s foggy today. And cold (enough for the heating to come on automatically). Sounds like autumn to me.

Im always amazed when people think that because it’s warm and sunny where they are, then everyone else is ….

DreadingWinter · 02/09/2024 11:20

@greengreyblue Quite possibly. I do feel very low in the winter months.

justflewinfromthewindycity · 02/09/2024 11:47

@MtClair snap ! Where I am we have barely had a summer
There's been a couple of nights I've had to put the heating on.
Even my dad (who is as tight as they come ) switched it on

What a touching post. So true about not wanting to live a half life, I refuse to do that too. I've even gone and revisited particular places of trauma from my past and overwritten them with happy memories.

Luckily I live in a country where it's very normal to decorate for Autumn, more so than Halloween actually, and where they hold Herbstmesse - an absolutely gigantic Autumn Fair across the whole city that goes back to the 15th century. (I don't think the Emperor, Pope and Mayor were on Tiktok at the time, and definitely weren't American).

Like another poster I keep a small box of stone, wood and ceramic autumn ornaments in my cellar and when I have my big end of summer deep clean I unwrap and swap them for other ornaments, it literally adds 15 mins onto my deep clean.

I'm a single mother working 45 hours a week, and yes I find the time to do it, because I enjoy doing it. Home decorating is a hobby for me, I find it relaxing and I enjoy sitting in the setting of a cosy room at autumn, and more so, coming home to my outdoor lanterns and porch decorations on a cold evening.

Autumnalapples · 02/09/2024 13:27

I’m in NE and if I waited for the clocks to fall back, for autumn it might have already snowed ❄️.
Don’t go on Facebook autumn groups. They are brilliant and mad at the same time! I love it. 🍁🍂.
The weather is cool and damp and dull outside. But still clammy in house.

TheMauveBeaker · 02/09/2024 17:36

Autumn decorations? Was going to ask if you’re American but you would’ve called it Fall I assume. Have never, will never “decorate for Autumn”.

Meteorological Autumn starts Sept 1st so it works to do it today if you want to. However, it's a bit early for me. Official Autumn is Sept 22nd so I will do it then.

Edited

You are my blummin husband 😂

I want to swap out our bunting for the autum one and put our Halloween duvet on and he says 21/22 September is autumn 😟

Hellodollydaydream · 02/09/2024 17:48

First world problems? Are you seriously asking this question I despair

HarrietsweetHarriet · 02/09/2024 17:51

Do it OP! And please post photos.
