What date do you decorate for autumn?

I have got some lovely autumn decorative bits but not sure what date I should start putting them out.
Is 1st September too early ?

I think there so much reaction is because the op title is ‘ What date do you decorate for Autumn?’ , so it’s assuming that everyone does, and also that it’s a thing. The way it’s worded is inviting people to respond to the question, which they have.

However, if it had been worded differently, then there would have been fewer or different reactions. Ie. ‘Are you putting up Autumn decorations, and if so, when?’, for example.

In a small space I think it's nice to freshen things up with some of changes.

planAplanB · 01/09/2024 21:04

Don't decorate for autumn ffs

spikeandbuffy24 · 01/09/2024 21:05

Asda have loads of Halloween and autumn stuff because I just went online shopping
It's all year round stuff for me and nothing plastic

What date do you decorate for autumn?

I have lived in the country for 50 years, aside from 7 years overseas my parents lived here all their lives and I can honestly say that they nor anybody else they knew in the village ever decorated for anything other than Christmas. So no, it's not "definitely a country thing" at all.

What sort of village do you live in that doesn’t celebrate the Harvest Festival?
How strange!

Does no one update their window boxes/tubs? Not change their flowers/plants to more autumnal availability? Not change curtains or throws?
It doesn't have to be bunting or pumpkin arrangements, I would be surprised if they did nothing at all. It's how you define decor.

Nope. I may replace spring flowers with winter flowing plants in my tubs, but I wouldn’t call that ‘decorating for autumn’ specifically.

Similarly, I never change curtains, cushions, bed covers etc - same stuff all year round. If I get a throw out, it’s to keep be warm as the days get colder, so a practical reason, not ornamental.

My house looks the same all year round, a part from two -three weeks at Christmas (;never put decorations up until approx ten days before Christmas, and then it’s only tree and ornaments).

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 01/09/2024 21:17

It's been 24 degrees here today (SWales)
Typically the nicest day for most of the school holidays.

I can't be arsed with changing seasons stuff, where do people store it?

Ah, so it wasn't a load of goady pickers just wanting to jump on the OP, and show us their superiority then?
It was the OP not making herself entirely clear, and inviting them in! Got it.

notprincehamlet · 01/09/2024 22:01

It's a harmless thread about having a few autumn things in your house.
It starts with a few autumn things, next thing you know you're punching polar bears and badmouthing David Attenborough, such is the power of the scatter cushion. Soft furnishings have turned many a good person bad.

Oakiedoakie · 01/09/2024 22:17

I honestly don't understand the mean comments on this thread. I love celebrating the seasons and for me autumn means warmer scents in candles and body lotion etc , autumn foliage in vases, heavier throws. I will deffo get some pumpkins closer to Halloween. I love autumn but this year, we've had such a crap summer, I'm not ready for it yet!

CrushingOnRubies · 01/09/2024 22:20

I don't but when my sunflowers need replacing I might get something more seasonal

Might get the Halloween decorations out in the middle of October

Octopies · 01/09/2024 22:27

Lots of assumption and judgement from the over privileged on here. As kids we'd corn weave displays for the local church and check in on members of the community to check they had everything they needed for the colder months.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 01/09/2024 22:30

I almost daren’t admit this, but I decorate for autumn. I have a garland of felt toadstools/mushroom that I made and hand up, some felt leaves as a garland I made years ago for my classroom and have at home now. My children have some wooden mushrooms they have painted. We have some pine ones in a bowl that we collected last week. It’s not intense and we only have a few pumpkins (that we grew) on the window sill later in the month.

😂

And we mustn't forget that sniffing those pumpkin spice candles is a gateway to heroin.

The Venn diagram of people who couldn’t possibly fathom seasonable home decor that’s reused annually as it’s gasp so bad for the environment, and the people who slag off just stop oil is a perfect circle.

Edited

When someone posts 'what part time job has your teen got?' do these people come on to say 'I haven't got children' or when someone asks 'what car would you recommend for a family of 6' do they say 'I don't drive and you should use the bus'. If they do, they're weird and need to realise that if something doesn't apply to them, they don't need to answer, especially not with a nasty and/or piss taking tone or faux naivety to try to prove their superiority. How odd.

JasmineInTheBreeze · 01/09/2024 22:49

Just gone to active threads and someone is asking 'what do you eat with lasagne?'.... as I don't eat lasagne, I'm obviously going to have to reply and say 'er, I don't' like the first reply on this thread. I mean I couldn't possibly just ignore it. 🤨

pizzaHeart · 02/09/2024 00:45

justflewinfromthewindycity · 01/09/2024 13:59

I'm in the north east it's 15 degrees today with a chilly wind and heavy rain
We haven't had much summer up here

I would do it now then. There might be a few warm days in September but it would be a different warmth anyway. It doesn’t feel like summer already and the colours are changing.

Maybe they have to try to show their superiority and make themselves relevant somehow. I can't imagine these miserable, mocking people with their snidy, faux naive comments are popular in real life. Who wants people like that around them?

What on earth brought that on? I left this thread yesterday, come back this morning and find insults flying about, plus defensiveness, chips on shoulders......

It may seema bit eccentric to decorate for autumn, I admit I had never heard of the tradition,, but surely there's nothing objectionable about it and it seems quite a few people do it.

The op didn't know what she was starting :-).

Maybe they click on it because they have an opinion.

But the question didn't ask for a opinion, did it? The op asked for a time frame.

ForGreyKoala · 02/09/2024 06:10

Well I can't say I've ever heard of anyone 'decorating' for autumn or any other season, but it's autumn now so go ahead if you want to. It doesn't matter what anyone else does surely?

I woke up this morning and punched poor David and told a polar bear to fuck off.
I feel awful now, I didn't realise I was supposed to do it the other way around 🙈

Nannyfannybanny · 02/09/2024 07:15

No plastic tat here,my silk autumn leaves, berries cost a lot of money and I have had them for years. I also use similar things found in the garden... dried seeds heads, pine cones collected from forest walks. The thick curtains are for comfort, practicality and cost saving, same with the throws, again bought in IKEA donkeys years ago. As for the pumpkins, I have a relative who grows them on an allotment, the are hardened off on the kitchen windowsill and then eaten..
