Nancy Britwhistle seems to love hers, I must have done something wrong because mine smelt and was slimy. @gardenmusic .
Must have another go this year, because loads of conker trees ( horse chestnut)around us.

Autumnalapples

I need to have a go, because I am inundated with conkers, it would be rude not to!
I will try it out on some old jeans first!

Exactly. If I stumble into a thread discussing something that doesn’t appeal to me I just move on. But I’m not a snide fun sponge.

I was just thinking this!
Maybe a naff comparison but, I’m not into football, so if there was a thread titled “how do you prepare for the new football season?” I wouldn’t come on leaving pointless comments like:
”Buying football t shirts is tat and a waste of money!”
”Who has time to enjoy watching football?”
“You only go to a match so you can post about it on Instagram!”
”You are all lunatics with more money and time than sense!”

I wouldn’t say any of these things. I’d just…move on. In fact, I wouldn’t even click on the thread in the first place because it wouldn’t interest me.

Shame these “you’re all ridiculous for adding autumnal joy to your home!” people can’t do the same and leave us to enjoy our pumpkin spice candles in peace 🎃

Just ignore them.
So busy virtue signalling that they willfully dismiss what people are saying about using nature to decorate, getting out last year's goods, using throws and curtains that actually preserve heat in the house, treating themselves to the odd bit and making decorations.
No, we must all be buying baskets full of plastic tat every year, and throwing it away each season. 'You people! Honestly!'
Either their comprehension is very lacking or they are being goady.

Thank you and agreed completely

I'm not sure why you're so argumentative. If you have issues, please don't take them out on me.

This stuff is widely available in shops, you only have to look down the aisle to see it all, not go down it, it's also in window displays, it's even on the ends of aisles that you will have to walk past.

I still think there is mocking from people and I don't believe that people genuinely don't know this stuff is sold and that some people decorate for Autumn. There have been many, many threads on the subject for the years I've been on mumsnet. You'd have to live in a bubble to not realise it's a thing some people do. Of course people will deny they're aware so they can mock or pretend they're shocked. I'm not sure what they get out of that.

I have never ever seen a thread about it on MN and I've been on here for years!

Easter yes
Christmas yes
Christmas Eve boxes and Advent boxes yes
Halloween yes

Autumn, or general seasonal decorating, no.

And I don't see it in supermarkets either. They might switch up their candle scents but that's it.

But it would be in the right section rather than a general thread.

For example, there are lots of threads on here about what exercise apps people recommend. But they are in the Exercise section.

This is in the high traffic chat section and has therefore attracted some attention.

I completely agree. During Covid when we started being at home more I started trying to make more nice traditions and mix up our decor, moving things in and out of the loft as the seasons change. It brings me and the children joy. Not getting much joy atm so it helps.

I hope your days to come bring you endless joy and things such as cosying up your home bring that!

I'm a person who grew up with absolutely fuck all but chaos, I'm a person who's never earned more than national minimum wage and I don't have a family rich in traditions. (That arent lengthy prisons stays and drug and alcohol addictions anyway 😂) So I made my own for my kids. We don't get to travel, so we learn about the world by cooking foods from different places and learning about things eaten at different celebrations. (Besides my autistic son who believes trying a chip without ketchup makes his palette diverse!)
Eg, we make a fuss for the day of the dead and watch coco after a chilli and churros.
I like that during colder months my old slow cooker is full of hot chocolate and some old jars have marshmallows or malterasers in them and the kids can help themselves.
It's nice that it looks cosy and there are some felt pumpkins dotted about etc, I enjoy it.
My kids enjoy it. It's the home I'd have loved growing up, it's not harming anyone. If people are chucking away perfectly good decor after one season then that would be an issue but I don't know anyone who would do that?
I think this thread (not because of the op!) Is just a superiority flex from people who perhaps can afford to invest in quality things should they wish, airing their distaste at plebs who shop at affordable shops. If this thread was "autumn homewares from John lewis" we'd have had a very different thread.

The being so falsley perplexed or little jibes about people having more money than they have, when it's obviously a something people who are a bit skint and do want a bit of cheer do more is very telling what posters think about lower earners.

It's absolutely wonderful to care about the environment, I even do myself but it's not okay to judge people on a budget wanting some joy or assume theyre exploited by social media telling them they need to have an influencer style home, I'm perfectly capable of deciding what to put in my house and what not, I'm poor, not a dickhead. 😂

greengreyblue · 01/09/2024 20:21

Maybe they click on it because they have an opinion.

DoYouReally · 01/09/2024 20:23

I have never even considered this or knew it was a thing.

I make changes to everything else, wardrobe, diet, perfume, hair colour, exercise routine, etc but never even crossed my mind to do it to the house.

I guess the garden does it naturally so that'll have to do.

JasmineInTheBreeze · 01/09/2024 20:24

We decorate the house for autumn in mid September. It's something we've always done and that we like doing.

We've got loads of stuff from over the years and buy a couple of new things each year and donate a couple to the charity shop. We know lots of people who do it, I'm not sure why it bothers people so much but it's funny to see them lose their minds over it on mumsnet every year. 😂 🎃 🍁 🍂

NothingAGoodCuppaDoesntFix · 01/09/2024 20:25

Usually mid Sept. Then change to Halloween when kids break up from school

Let them make twats of themselves. They'll soon move on to a Taylor Swift thread or something to spread their 'joy'.

greengreyblue · 01/09/2024 20:27

I think this is maybe a US tradition. Certainly wasn’t in U.K. prior to 5 years ago. Before then it was just Halloween pumpkins etc for one night. Wreaths were just at Christmas. Now you see autumn ones and spring too.

I have a garland over the mantle piece which I change with the seasons, so I suppose I decorate for autumn. I will change it when the trees in the gardens start to turn, so it matches them. It stays up until it is time for the winter one, when all the leaves have fallen.
the flowers in the vases ( many fake but not all) change to chrysanthemum fro dahlias when the garden does, too.

It looks to me as if autumn is going to be early this tear, some of the trees are definitely yellowing, so it will probably be by the end of September.

That sounds lovely

It doesn't matter what section it's in. The Xmas board gets lots of people saying 'it's August, how sad', the vegan section gets people saying 'but bacon sandwiches', etc.

People are arseholes for doing it even if it's on a more general board. They show themselves up. Best just to laugh at them.

We've been decorating our house for autumn since we bought a house, 22 years ago. Lots of people we know have done it for as long and had parents that did it too.

Davros · 01/09/2024 20:35

I don't decorate for autumn and never will. I used to put out Halloween decorations when DD was younger for her benefit, I couldn't wait to stop. However, I DO go all out for national events e.g. royal weddings, jubilees, football tournaments etc. I've got a bag of GB items and a bag of England items and I also do quite a lot of Christmas decorating. We're in London zone 2 so don't have those big shops or even any big supermarkets nearby. If we did, I might well get tempted...

Idk, my nan used to have a few seasonal bits a good 40 years ago. Easter tree in spring, cosy throw and generally more plaid in the autumn. Agreed that the amount in the shops might be influenced from abroad but I think bringing seasonal bits into your home goes back donkeys years!

olympicsrock · 01/09/2024 20:37

I’ll put my autumn wreath on the front door in late September. At the beginning of October I will do a little arrangement of pumpkins and felted Halloween decorations . These will come down in December to make way for Christmas decorations

I have lived in the country for 50 years, aside from 7 years overseas my parents lived here all their lives and I can honestly say that they nor anybody else they knew in the village ever decorated for anything other than Christmas. So no, it's not "definitely a country thing" at all.

What sort of village do you live in that doesn’t celebrate the Harvest Festival?
How strange!
