I have got some lovely autumn decorative bits but not sure what date I should start putting them out.
Is 1st September too early ?

"Over-consumption in developed countries is far from "innocent"

It's a major global problem (and a glaring example of inequality).

But I realise thar no wants to think that their (allegedly) harmless joyful habits are really highly detrimental"

You must be fun, I'm guessing you never order online, never buy any presents, never go abroad (or travel within your country) or drive, you just live in a hut and judge others?

Lwrenn · 01/09/2024 19:28

I'm sure we can care for the environment and have a plastic pumpkin that comes out the loft mid September and goes back up end of November.

We're not exactly flinging toxic waste into the sea and lighting forest fires here.

Although if anything has ever made me want too, it's this thread.

"The world is a horrible enough place without adding to landfill."

So guess you don't buy anything and only eat what you grow, raise or forage?

Cause otherwise you're a hypocrite.

JumpingBird · 01/09/2024 19:26

Same here in Scandinavia. But it seems unheard of in the UK that you can decorate without plastic and landfill. 😅

Well evidently enough people are buying the crappy stuff in the UK or the shops would not bother selling it.

Nottodaythankyou123 · 01/09/2024 19:33

fedupoftheheatnow · 01/09/2024 19:12

I think it's a nice thing to do, and even if I didn't I don't see the need to mock something that's innocent that others find joy in. The world is a horrible enough place without adding to it, let people have their joy, no one's saying it should be compulsory.

The faux ignorance is just an irritating attempt at superiority. The thread was for people who do decorate for autumn, I don’t understand why it’s run over with people pretending they can’t grasp the concept 🤷🏼‍♀️

I am sure they are. Different cultures, different society and approach to life maybe. Or interests. You often do as you were brought up.

We all need to eat. We can't all grow our own food.

But no-one needs to buy tat imported from China.

LipstickOnHisGuitar · 01/09/2024 19:35

@ISeriouslyDoubtIt

Because of how they word their posts with the fake questions, the mocking tone towards Americans, influencers, saying they wouldn't possibly have time, despite spending time on mumsnet etc. Pathetic really.

I think @justflewinfromthewindycity is getting a hard time. How many people here buy bunches of daffodils in the spring or plant bulbs in pots for an indoor display or get cyclamen or poinsettia for Christmas or have a bowl of horse chestnuts or pinecones sitting out from walks with their kids in autumn or have some flowers for cutting in their garden? It doesn't have to be about plastic tat.

I agree.
Mumsnet gets really funny about things like this. It's the same people that get their knickers in a twist about Christmas Eve boxes 😂 You do you.

I absolutely love autumn and always go looking for conkers and enjoy the cosy evenings. Last year I learned to crochet little pumpkins and I'll have a few of those around, the odd autumnal candle and I think I might have a couple of pumpkin shaped mugs (shoot me!) 😂

supportpangolin · 01/09/2024 19:38

I'll leave you all to your plastic pumpkins and hope they bring you joy...

Do you think over-consumption is good then?

I'm judging the action, not the people.

I don't think giving birthday presents is equivalent to "autumn decorations"

My Christmas decorations are years old (and yes, I'd post similar about waste/overconsumption about buying new Xmas decorations to fit an annual "theme") and I try to make everything last (mending whenever possible). I keep my tech until it completely packs in (rather than replacing every time I'm "eligible" for an upgrade) and don't own a car.

It's a metric fuckton more joyless to have your home wiped out by flooding, or wild fires or any of the natural disasters that are becoming more common because of climate change, then it is to refrain from buying in to new commercially-driven opportunities to give money to companies.

gardenmusic · 01/09/2024 19:39

fedupoftheheatnow

Just ignore them.
So busy virtue signalling that they willfully dismiss what people are saying about using nature to decorate, getting out last year's goods, using throws and curtains that actually preserve heat in the house, treating themselves to the odd bit and making decorations.
No, we must all be buying baskets full of plastic tat every year, and throwing it away each season. 'You people! Honestly!'
Either their comprehension is very lacking or they are being goady.

Not a plastic pumpkin in sight here! Almost like there’s a middle ground 🤷🏼‍♀️ I haven’t been abroad in 5 years, I’ll be damned if someone makes me feel bad for using a pumpkin duvet I’ve had for 5 years.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 01/09/2024 19:42

I get a couple of blankets out of the airing cupboard when it starts to get chilly. Does that count?

gardenmusic · 01/09/2024 19:42

supportpangolin

Absolutely. Off you go and revel in your superiority, knowing that we poor uneducated plebs are plotting landfill.

Shakenandstirredup · 01/09/2024 19:43

@ISeriouslyDoubtIt

”Why can't you understand that some people, including me, didn't realise that autumn decorating was a "thing"? Enough people on here have said they didn't know.”

Thats why I mentioned comprehension. Well and the fact they are calling me argumentative whilst telling me I have to have know this stuff is out there & that it’s a thing. 😆😆😆

I completely agree. During Covid when we started being at home more I started trying to make more nice traditions and mix up our decor, moving things in and out of the loft as the seasons change. It brings me and the children joy. Not getting much joy atm so it helps.

reluctantbrit · 01/09/2024 19:44

I honestly don't know why people always think it has to be plastic and will be thrown away afterwards?

Candles burn down
My "dust catcher" are fabric and ceramic, they will be put away end of November and come out next year. The same with my Christmas things, I have items which are 20+years old.
Conkers, twigs, leaves are going into the garden waste bin

And not a single pumpkin in sight, I hate them.

Autumnalapples · 01/09/2024 19:46

You can make a conker laundry liquid. That’s very eco. I reuse/recycle and buy new throws and ceramic pumpkins.
I also have a very lovely but not environmentally friendly cat. But she brings joy.

No, quite. There's been a lot of assumptions. Quite sad really.

However I am currently sat about to needle felt a pumpkin...which is completely because of this thread. So thanks MN!!! 😂

LilBowWow · 01/09/2024 19:48

The fact the OP has asked the question clearly means it’s a ‘thing’ for some people at least. Absolutely no point to the “eh???” or “I don’t know what decorating for Autumn means!” comments unless you’re really lacking an imagination.

gardenmusic · 01/09/2024 19:52

I actually started a thread on this, with no replies - have you tried it, and how was it, please?

Maybe they have to try to show their superiority and make themselves relevant somehow. I can't imagine these miserable, mocking people with their snidy, faux naive comments are popular in real life. Who wants people like that around them?

Exactly. If I stumble into a thread discussing something that doesn’t appeal to me I just move on. But I’m not a snide fun sponge.

Yep. It's a harmless thread about having a few autumn things in your house. It's strange that it gets such a reaction.
