I don't celebrate Halloween either

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/09/2024 16:42

I might move the sandals and sun hats out of the porch to make way for the wellies and woolies in a few weeks.

As ever in the UK it's a taste and class thing. Natural decorations made from foliage and berries from your garden, cones and conkers from a walk...

Cost nothing and don't end up in landfill.

Fake plastic wreaths and garlands, cheap china pumpkins, polyester orange cushion covers, cheap pumpkin spice candles, whatever autumn stuff you can buy in The Range, B&M, Home Bargains etc, naff and common.

Cost money and will eventually end up in landfill.

Exactly.
And given how many people on a thread the other day don't recycle and don't care about it, the tat lovers will carry on buying and buying and not caring about what happens to it when they get bored with it.

smooththecat · 01/09/2024 16:42

Is it flocked plastic pumpkins territory?

VeronicaCreepcheese · 01/09/2024 16:44

I don't decorate for anything, much )beyond Christmas) - that's what outside's for. Just leave the curtains open and BAM! Seasonal decorations.

It is fabulous and I do aspire to having more money than sense but in the meantime I could lend you £14.99 - and some dark glasses and a fake beard to wear in case anyone spots you in Home Bargains (o rage! o desespoir!)

I've heard rumours that if you post home bargain links to mumsnet that you'll be haunted by the ghost of Hyacinth Bucket.
Good luck 😁

ManhattanPopcorn · 01/09/2024 16:46

What fresh hell is this?

Longleggedblond · 01/09/2024 16:47

I did get an Easter wreath as I celebrate it. Never occurred to me to do autumn. To much stress. Have 1 pair of curtains for each room. I can't be armed to change throws, curtains etc.

Loulo6098 · 01/09/2024 16:47

We don't decorate for it but I think it's wonderful when people do. Less of the plastic stuff though. I love the foliage arrangements, seasonal harvest-themed recipes, seasonal candles, change of cushions/bedsheets, etc.

We visit America a lot and I look forward to seeing the decorations. I bought a harvest themed blanket from there- I bring it out in October and put it away in the spring.

I can't stand the sneering on MN have about this. I've just returned from Japan and saw plenty of autumn themed stuff there too. Decorating for the season is another cultural experience we can choose to participate in, or not. If people only see this as another influencer-thing, or 'tacky' American import, then perhaps they have more to learn about the wider world.

Mmm okay Hmmhttps://www.lecreuset.co.uk/en_GB/p/cast-iron-pumpkin-casserole/CI1238.html

Naff as hell but at least it will last for decades. People can be working class and/ or have bad taste and have pots of money.

PickledMuffin · 01/09/2024 13:48

Do people decorate according to the seasons 😳

I've lived on mainland Europe for the last 16 years and here very much so, and they've been doing it for years, especially the front door/front area in Germany/Switzerland, but usually also the dining table decor and some lounge ornaments.

justflewinfromthewindycity · 01/09/2024 16:53

I'm a bit confused how me (and others ) who like to add a candle /throw /whatever means we have no life or hobbies or friends
I 1.have many friends and a life and plenty of hobbies
It just so happens I love autumn /winter and like the house to look cosy

Nothing wrong with bringing twigs and berries into the house for autumn - I have fir cones, dried seed heads, leaf skeletons, sticks with lichens growing on them, bowls of coloured slate and interesting pebbles on my hearth and mantelpiece all year round.

What people are concerned about is the amount of unrecyclable stuff that retailers are stocking that will eventually end up as landfill.

It's not being "miserable" or a " fun sponge" or "sneery" to be concerned about that.

Exactly. There is a big difference between the small annual rituals people might do involving things from the outdoors and a mass commercial drive that imports plastic from thousands of miles away, coupled with a pressure for people to ‘buy new’ every year.

Chipsahoy · 01/09/2024 16:55

All those so concerned about the environment, do you drive? Do you jet off to somewhere hot? Seriously. My decor is years old and not one bit of it is plastic, it is, ceramic and knit. I grow my own seasonal plants and fruit. I make my own candles.
Such high and mighty.

And for those posters who talk about having a life with people and sports so no time for this or social media, firstly, you are on mumsnet like the rest of us and secondly, are you so narrow minded that you can’t see that other people have lives different to yours? I don’t have lots of people, hardly any in fact after I fled my home country, but my life is just as valid as yours. I spend it on my land with my animals. I decorate for seasons and live a simple wholesome life. It’s no less fulfilled than yours. Gosh the judgement and the assumptions.

User364837 · 01/09/2024 16:55

Ooh seasonal display in the entrance hall like lots of tinned food for harvest festival type thing?

RaraRachael · 01/09/2024 16:59

Is "Decorating for Autumn" a new American thing we're meant to be doing.

Never heard of it.

Babyworriesreal · 01/09/2024 17:02

Another I don't. Even my sister, who has no children, but still decorates for easter and Halloween (beautifully) doesn't. But if it makes you happy, just do it when it feels right. Quite autumnal in the Northeast currently. I found my first conkers last week, and when dog walking in the wood, noticed things were less dense, and I could see through the trees.

It’s a Scandi thing too in that case. But no plastic tat, just mainly naturai things from the forest.

supportpangolin · 01/09/2024 17:05

If you live in a village where the bus service has been cut to the bone a car is pretty much essential.

Do you jet off to somewhere hot? Seriously...

No, I don't "jet off to somewhere hot".

You and the Americans, killing the planet, one pumpkin spiced candle at a time 😂

Ignore them. Some like to be an arse for arses sake and others like to think they are super cool with their faux ignorance.

I'd like to see how ethically and environmentally sound they all claim to live whilst berating others! My guess is they've left a fair few environmental footprints themselves but will choose to ignore that whilst they are on a green rampage.

Yet another thing for already stressed mums to worry that they're not doing properly, by the sound of things.

The sooner people stop having this mentality about stuff that other people do.. the better. Why would they be stressed about putting a few pumpkins out? Absolutely nobody says they have to.

I think that would look absolutely lovely, in your house!
I prefer a huge vase of Chysanths, or maybe some late roses from the garden, but each to their own.

It's quite a Germanic thing to do, my late MIL used to have some very nice things.
