FFS, I don't even "decorate for" Christmas, let alone autumn 😂

This 😀

SummerFade · 01/09/2024 15:40

No, you’re quite wrong about that.

Decorating for the seasons is definitely a country thing going back at least a hundred years as my grandparents did it and they were born in the 1890’s, so if you’re a townie, you probably don’t notice the changing seasons as much. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have lived in the country for 50 years, aside from 7 years overseas my parents lived here all their lives and I can honestly say that they nor anybody else they knew in the village ever decorated for anything other than Christmas. So no, it's not "definitely a country thing" at all.

EmeraldDreams73 · 01/09/2024 16:15

I don't! I see a lot of Instagram accounts putting pumpkins and wreaths and stuff out but imho that's an American step too far. I wouldn't add bits and bobs for the sake of it - wouldn't mind switching up cushions etc, but nowhere to store them. Plus, budget and motivation would be required...nah.

And I say this as someone with a home-focused Insta account - I'm renovating an old cottage and love everything about interior design. Each to their own.

pinkroses79 · 01/09/2024 16:15

I have never known anyone to decorate for Autumn. I can only just manage to get organised for Christmas, adding anything else in would be really stressful!

Bibblunders · 01/09/2024 16:17

I put a few Halloween bits out on the 1st October.

BotterMon · 01/09/2024 16:17

WTAF? Is this Instagram crap? Social Influencers don't have any space in my life because I actually, you know, have a life with people and sports etc.

I don't even decorate for Christmas bar sticking a tree up at some point around 20th December.

It's 26 degrees here in the shade so Autumn is far from my mind!

Erm ..totally unrelated but could I borrow £269?

😈

It is fabulous and I do aspire to having more money than sense but in the meantime I could lend you £14.99 - and some dark glasses and a fake beard to wear in case anyone spots you in Home Bargains (o rage! o desespoir!)

We are decorating our gardens for Autumn when the neighbours trees lose their leaves.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/09/2024 16:20

Seasonal plants and food are fine, because they're -well- genuinely seasonal.

Changing decor seasonally seems like a huge waste of time and money but each to their own.

'Changing up' anything at all though, unless it's gears on a manual car - where the heck did that phrase come from?

HideTheCroissants · 01/09/2024 16:20

viques · 01/09/2024 15:49

28 in London today according to my phone. It says “sunny ,warmer than yesterday.” Which is true.

Very warm where I am today. Neighbour is in her bikini in the back garden. I haven’t gone that far but shorts, vest and ice cream in the garden for me. ☀️

The only 'decorative' thing I do for autumn, is to start burning my favourite autumnal candle.

I hear it's traditional to consult the B&M Almanac for this type of thing, or Home Bargains Book of Seasonal Household Adornment, which both state the earlier and the more abundant the better.

They also advise a year round program is the goal, rotating Christmas, Easter, Summer (especially those little hanging fake topiary balls and fake tiki torches), then of course you've got your Autumn slash Halloween bonanza, the biggy. You will need to buy costumes for your DC, and your dogs too if you really want to tick all the Social Media friendly boxes.

It's certainly enough to keep you lying awake at night and going wild in the aisles, not to mention the storage unit you'll need to rent. Have fun!

This post says far more about your ' taste' and lack of imagination, and common sense than you think.
Smacks of setting yourself above 'Those people', whilst showing your ignorance.

AxolotlEars · 01/09/2024 16:23

We have been doing it for 20 years because we started doing nature tables when the kids were little. Then people started buying Autumn stuff for us too. I tried to stop a few years ago but my, now adult, kids were most put out 🤣

Yes, I didn't know decorating for autumn was a thing. But I have summery candles and wintery candles.

Waitingfordoggo · 01/09/2024 14:02

Aye. And no wonder the planet is fucked.

Exactly, it hurts us all. Nobody needs to be buying stuff and all of the energy and material that involves just to have seasonal decor.

Plus there's an element of keeping up with the Joneses so people will feel obliged to do it even if it's extra stress and money they can't afford.

Look at the insane state of leavers discos. They've now become american proms with vast amounts of money squandered on them. People doing daft shit like hiring helicopters for their kids.

Look at Halloween, gone are the old British traditions of apple bobbing and toffee apples. It's all American style trick or treating for sweets and dressing up in cheap mass produced outfits that end up in landfill.

It's all so showy and unnecessary

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 01/09/2024 16:28

Decorate for autumn?

Er what?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 01/09/2024 16:28

It's threads like these that make me realise that Mumsnet is basically just another influencer. I guess it brings in the revenue...

CurlyhairedAssassin · 01/09/2024 16:30

You're behind the times, anyway, OP. The latest trend is underconsumption core.

Firenzeflower · 01/09/2024 16:36

YES! I accept 😁

Whale80ne · 01/09/2024 14:18

You should do it today if it makes you happy.

I live in an EU country where lots of families decorate for each season, usually with a mix of natural stuff collected from the forest and ceramics and wooden items they bring out every year. Porches, doorsteps, wreaths on doors and window sills seem to be very commonly decorated for each season and extra added for a week or so before Christmas and Easter.

I don't do it but it's nice to see as long as you're not using disposable plastic tat (which here a few people do, especially at Christmas and Easter).

Yeah this is what we do. No plastic, no tat or landfill. Just natural stuff from the forest behind our house.

As long as you are not replacing the stuff every year then I don't see why anyone would be mad. If you are binning then buying year after year that's not great

Exactly this. I like spending 10 minutes making small changes to my decor at the change of the seasons and find it helps lift my spirits a bit. Also means I can get away with leaving it a good 10 years before repainting rooms as the small changes stop me getting bored.

Most of it's hand me down stuff from relatives, so I've picked through and sorted what decor goes with what and seasonal colours. Usually I'll change artificial flower vases to what's in season (they're all hand me downs so saved from going to landfill). I have a few seasonal cross stitches I've made which I like to change over. When the weather gets colder I'll change the sofa throws and blankets to something more appropriate, thicker blankets for colder months . I don't drive and haven't been on holiday in 30 years, so I manage to not beat myself up too hard for my personal contribution to climate change! 😆

I have never, and never will, decorate for Autumn

Depends on your definition of decorate. Do you buy daffs in the spring? Do you buy seasonal plants? Window boxes or tubs get changed?
Do you have throws in your house? (I am aware not everyone needs them)
Do you have scented candles or oils? If so, do you change the scents seasonally?
It's not all about plastic pumpkins.
