Who's got the time, or space for that nonsense. It's hard enough finding somewhere to stash the xmas tree!

Loving the Mumsnet faux denial of knowledge of such things.

I have genuinely never heard of this. I've heard of Halloween decorations.

notprincehamlet · 01/09/2024 15:50

I hear it's traditional to consult the B&M Almanac for this type of thing, or Home Bargains Book of Seasonal Household Adornment, which both state the earlier and the more abundant the better
Mea culpa - went into HB yesterday for descaler and came out with a very dinky cast iron pumpkin casserole dish Grin I've broken out the velour pumpkin cushion too and replaced some summer plants with cyclamen and violas. Autumn colours are lovely.

JaneJeffer · 01/09/2024 15:51

Yes, I think it’s quite common over here in Ireland to decorate the house with natural flora and fabrics as the seasons change.
I have to force myself to put up the Christmas decorations never mind anything else

Prescottdanni123 · 01/09/2024 15:51

I like being able to change up colour schemes/seasonal decor. I don't do anything drastic. I have a few decorations for each season plus all of my Christmas stuff. And I have a couple of throws, 1 darker and more festive for autumn and winter, and a lighter coloured one for spring and summer.

I also make a lot of my decorations. It's a way of making something that I will actually use instead of something that I will stuff in a drawer and forgetting about it for five years.

As for when you put autumn decorations out, I don't think that there is a wrong answer. Whenever you feel like it.

RheaRend · 01/09/2024 15:53

I don't even decorate for Christmas!

Oganesson118 · 01/09/2024 15:54

Decorate for autumn? Erm, never. I might put some halloween stuff out but only for the few days before Halloween and they go straight away on 1 November (I hate halloween though, it's only to appease my kid)

Wheresthebeach · 01/09/2024 15:54

Eh????
Never heard of this

MadeForFun · 01/09/2024 15:55

I got my autumn bits out of the shed this afternoon 😊 looking forward to a cosy evening later. It's dull and chilly here today so it felt right.

supportpangolin · 01/09/2024 15:55

As ever in the UK it's a taste and class thing. Natural decorations made from foliage and berries from your garden, cones and conkers from a walk...

Cost nothing and don't end up in landfill.

Fake plastic wreaths and garlands, cheap china pumpkins, polyester orange cushion covers, cheap pumpkin spice candles, whatever autumn stuff you can buy in The Range, B&M, Home Bargains etc, naff and common.

Cost money and will eventually end up in landfill.

Hadjab · 01/09/2024 15:55

I might change up my scented candles from something summery to something wintery, but that’s as far as it gets here.

Also it’s 26 degrees here, and I’m sweating, so summery candle it is!

I'd heard of it, I just didn't think people outside of store catalogues actually DID it!

I don't dare tell most people on here I also buy a nice autumn/Halloween mug also 😂

As long as you are not replacing the stuff every year then I don't see why anyone would be mad. If you are binning then buying year after year that's not great

We have different sets of curtains for winter and summer (heavier & darker for winter). Different duvets and duvet covers, and sometimes different throws & cushions on the sofa. I just change them over when it's cold and dark out. Not all in one go, just when the things need washing. No way I would be doing it now when it's 30 degrees and blazing sun. Probably around late November.

But that puts pressure on people to join in and do it, what if they didn't want to?
Round here on my street at Christmas some people have some outside lights, others don't, no one cares.
I think it would be awful if people felt they must do it, even worse to have a communal get together with all your neighbours! I say hello to my neighbours and have a bit more of a chat with the ones I've lived next door to for 30 years, but we've never been in each others houses and there's no communal socialising in the street, and that's why I like living here.

Nobody is forcing you to live there, the neighbourhood association probably wouldn’t have let you buy a house with that attitude anyway!

Edited

It's amazing the difference between North and South. I'm NE England and its 15 degrees and dull. It was 7 degrees on Thursday night.

I think there was one day earlier this summer, where it hit 25/26.

Mind, I'm not complaining.

I think it’s more of a country V town aesthetic rather than class based.

Living rurally doesn’t mean you’re wealthy and living in a massive house but I guess even a small cottage is likely to be bigger than the average London flat. It costs a lot less to buy though. My young London living grandson stayed with us during the summer holidays and he didn’t know what a loft was. He was surprised by how much stuff we store in them. 😂

LynetteScavo · 01/09/2024 16:04

It's 24'C here, still very much summer. Nothing autumnal happening in this house until October half term/halloween.

Getonwitit · 01/09/2024 16:07

My Mum and Granny always changed the curtains and cushions for Autumn/winter. I suppose it was due to only having single glazed windows, you needed heavy curtains to keep the draughts out.

BustyLaRoux · 01/09/2024 16:11

Expo23 · 01/09/2024 13:19

For me, it is changing some of the curtains to a more seasonal tone that fit autumn and winter (merlot). The throws, cushions and doormat as well. Changing vases and fairy lights. I have a seasonal display in the entrance hall, so that too.

Whaaaat?! What is all this? Is a thing?

ooh this sounds like a lovely idea! I’m gonna do this. I love autumn and would love to decorate at the beginning of each season like you’re saying but a) I’m disorganised and b) where do you keep the summer cushions and stuff during winter and vice versa? My house isn’t big enough
