I hear it's traditional to consult the B&M Almanac for this type of thing, or Home Bargains Book of Seasonal Household Adornment, which both state the earlier and the more abundant the better.

They also advise a year round program is the goal, rotating Christmas, Easter, Summer (especially those little hanging fake topiary balls and fake tiki torches), then of course you've got your Autumn slash Halloween bonanza, the biggy. You will need to buy costumes for your DC, and your dogs too if you really want to tick all the Social Media friendly boxes.

It's certainly enough to keep you lying awake at night and going wild in the aisles, not to mention the storage unit you'll need to rent. Have fun!

Because god forbid anyone would do those things and not put it on social media. How ridiculous.

To offer a counter example of how people might live and think....MN is the closest I get to social media, and being a very environmentally minded household we avoid buying anything at all if we can help it. Anything we decorate with is something we've picked up when out for a walk...conkers, beech nuts and autumn leaves slowly replace the seashells and stones on our little shelf which is used to display the kids treasures. A friend of mine makes beautiful displays from leaves and things she's picked up on walks, she gathers them into little bouquets and they're really quite lovely.

I think I'll add putting the kids (hand me down, worn for many consecutive years) halloween costumes in their dress up box to the list of things I do for the equinox though so thanks for that spark of an idea. Will get us in the mood for the season!!

I don’t intentionally decorate for Autumn , but necessity dictates certain preparations and I enjoy the ritual . I dot candles around because it’s darker earlier, blankets brought down because it’s colder, firewood stocked up etc. I buy big bags of pulses for slow cooker meals, sort winter clothes , wellies etc. Maybe string some fairly lights up to ward off the dark night blues. Nevertheless, by January the toast catalogue vibe has well and truly deteriorated into home bargains on acid.

spikeandbuffy24 · 01/09/2024 15:37

I change a few bits, nothing is wasted
But it's more gradual I guess and things I naturally do rather than decor

Stuff like brushed cotton bedding instead of the light cotton
Autumn/winter scented candles instead of the citrus ones
Finish the summery hand soap and shower gel, swap for moisturising ones as my skin gets drier
Heavy throws out the blanket basket and on the sofa
Check my heated blanket works!

I don't decorate for autumn as such but I do have some different cushions and cosier blankets that I bring out in the autumn, usually early October - 1st September is too early for me because it's usually quite warm until at least mid September.
I then have some Halloween decorations for the kids that we put up just for about a week before Halloween

Ooh we need an autumn food thread then! 🧡🤎

I'm in!!

EveryOtherNameTaken · 01/09/2024 15:38

Not today. It's 27° in London!

butterpuffed · 01/09/2024 15:38

I do what makes me happy so I just put up decorations at Christmas . I love being a boring old fart 😃

FeralNun · 01/09/2024 15:38

I think decorating for a change in season is a lovely thing to do - so long as it doesn’t involve more plastic tat, or indeed, spending much, if any money.
Autumn is actually brilliant for this - turning leaves, hips and haws, apples, whatever you can gather or grow.
I do buy in a stock of candles though, and get some pumpkins from the local farm later in the season!

Alwaysyoudoyou · 01/09/2024 15:40

This thread is making me feel very autumnal! I think I might craft myself some pumpkins so they're ready to go out at the end of September. I needle felted and dyed eggs to display in the spring. Give me a few years and I'll have all sorts!!!

Another naff American influence.

No, you’re quite wrong about that.

Decorating for the seasons is definitely a country thing going back at least a hundred years as my grandparents did it and they were born in the 1890’s, so if you’re a townie, you probably don’t notice the changing seasons as much. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t think it was for show, it was for the community. Everybody would decorate and then the neighbourhood would close the roads and we’d have a huge pig pickin.

Same for Halloween, people went all out to make it magical for the children.

But that puts pressure on people to join in and do it, what if they didn't want to?
Round here on my street at Christmas some people have some outside lights, others don't, no one cares.
I think it would be awful if people felt they must do it, even worse to have a communal get together with all your neighbours! I say hello to my neighbours and have a bit more of a chat with the ones I've lived next door to for 30 years, but we've never been in each others houses and there's no communal socialising in the street, and that's why I like living here.

pumpkinpillow · 01/09/2024 15:41

Yes, I think it’s quite common over here in Ireland to decorate the house with natural flora and fabrics as the seasons change.

I made friends with a woman from Ireland when we were both living in Germany.
I loved how she went foraging for seasonal bits from the woods to decorate her flat.

@justflewinfromthewindycity bad enough having to put a tree up for christmas!!! who the hell wants to decorate for bloody autumn???

Solonga · 01/09/2024 15:45

It feels a bit early to change my Emma Bridgewater mugs to the Autumn ones yet, I am still using the sunflower and strawberries ones, its about 24c and hot sunshine.

Actually its not 24c it's 26c

Nanny0gg · 01/09/2024 15:45

SwanSong1 · 01/09/2024 13:56

Never! Why would any one decorate just because it's Autumn? How bizarre!

Quite

My house is decorated how I like it and 'seasonal changes' wouldn't 'go' (let alone the money)

Christmas is enough

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 01/09/2024 15:47

Is decorating for autumn a thing?

daffodilandtulip · 01/09/2024 15:47

Loving the Mumsnet faux denial of knowledge of such things.

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 01/09/2024 15:47

As ever in the UK it's a taste and class thing. Natural decorations made from foliage and berries from your garden, cones and conkers from a walk, Dyptique Feu du Bois candle, all lovely.
Fake plastic wreaths and garlands, cheap china pumpkins, polyester orange cushion covers, cheap pumpkin spice candles, whatever autumn stuff you can buy in The Range, B&M, Home Bargains etc, naff and common.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/09/2024 15:48

supportpangolin · 01/09/2024 15:16

Nothing wrong with bringing twigs and berries into the house for autumn - I have fir cones, dried seed heads, leaf skeletons, sticks with lichens growing on them, bowls of coloured slate and interesting pebbles on my hearth and mantelpiece all year round.

What people are concerned about is the amount of unrecyclable stuff that retailers are stocking that will eventually end up as landfill.

It's not being "miserable" or a " fun sponge" or "sneery" to be concerned about that.

Yes, all the orange and black plastic tat that’s in the shops now, or will be soon.

Mind you I’m a fine one to talk. Last year I couldn’t resist a massive spider ‘skeleton’ for the Gdcs’ Halloween.

But at least it wasn’t black or orange. And it’ll come out again every year. 🎃

heinzseight · 01/09/2024 15:48

😀😀

GingerPirate · 01/09/2024 15:49

I already have done, couldn't wait for that damned bright, hot Summer with long days to finish and for these children to go back to school.

viques · 01/09/2024 15:49

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 01/09/2024 14:06

26C. Shock Where are you?! In the Midlands it's 18-19C. Is that down south?

28 in London today according to my phone. It says “sunny ,warmer than yesterday.” Which is true.

heinzseight · 01/09/2024 15:49

The answer is, hardly anyone decorated for Autumn, so that means you can do it whenever you want, there's no set time.

katepilar · 01/09/2024 15:49

Its boiling summer here. October/November if any.
