Totally agree.
I actually think U2s fan club system has merit
You pay an annual fee but get exclusive merch which is of a reasonable value for that. You then get priority booking. There's two groups - those who have been in the fan club for years and those who are new joins.
The old group gets first go. But there's always tickets available for the second group and after a few years you graduate to the old group. This allows younger people to get in on the act.
As long as you maintain membership you stay in the group.
It really makes it harder for the tours. Plus the fan club encourages people to help others for face value because they are fans.
I did use to resent it a little but it worked well for fans against touts. And I think now, when it's been commercialised it's almost essential. It sucks but I don't think there's a reasonable way around it.
It's not worth it for the tours to be signed up for the fan clubs without a guaranteed tour. If there's several years between tours it ruins their profit. But the fans do get something out of it and unique access to other stuff.
Both U2 and Springsteens fan network is great for getting tickets if you don't get them first time around. People will sell for face value. The catch is usually you have to meet someone on the day at the venue. There are worse things.
