Age 41 & all my hair regrowth is grey. What can I do to reverse this?

I can't afford a root touch up every 6 weeks. It's seriously depressing, all my regrowth is grey, I have dark brown hair... Can this be reversed naturally?

Er, no.

I think you can buy root touch up things in boots though for between appts. I am sure someone will be along to recommend.

It’s an arse, that’s for sure

Appalonia · 26/08/2024 00:30

Sadly no. I had chestnut brown hair that started going grey in my fourties. I'm blonde now as it's much easier to hide the grey. Would blonde suit you OP?

Nope

I’ve often thought that the scientists who can stop the pigment disappearing from our hair will make a fortune - doesn’t sounds that hard to me! 😂

£8 box dye every 6-8 weeks. I am great at doing it having done it so many times!

When you can make aging go backwards, OP, give us all a shout 😂

Do you go the root touch up or a dye like castings? I do the loreal root touch up but it doesn't last...

I do a garnier box, leave for 25 mins on roots and then spread the rest on the rest of the hair for another 10 mins. Works great, have done it for years!

Sonolanona · 26/08/2024 00:52

Embrace the grey!
Honestly it's so freeing... yeah the grow out is painful if you have longer hair but so worth it. You could go lighter first.. highlights, blending , etc.

mondaytosunday · 26/08/2024 00:56

No. I started going grey at 17, and have dyed my hair ever since. About £8 every couple of months is fine, and you can use the touch up powder if roots become obvious.

Embrace the grey and look 70 at 41?

Ozanj · 26/08/2024 01:06

You can sometimes reverse it if it’s due to nutritional reasons. But at 41 it’s probably ageing

sunseaandsoundingoff · 26/08/2024 01:07

There's mixed views on whether they actually help or not, but supposedly pantothenic acid and folic acid supplements can help. Also reducing stress.

Zoflorabore · 26/08/2024 01:07

Super dark hair here op, almost black and it’s been like yours since I was late twenties and I’m now 46. I use the L’Oreal root touch up all the time as my roots need doing every 3 weeks as my hair has always grown ridiculously fast. I use a decent box dye on the roots and it looks really healthy.

I remember hearing my dad saying something when I was younger and was a bit horrified by it but it’s on going to happen one day. He said ( not to me! )” wait until your pubes go grey and then you can moan”

there are so many product’s about now to help with re-growth. I won’t be embracing the grey. My hair is waist length and I like it dark as I’m assuming you to too or wouldn’t have asked the question…

edited to add that the L’Oreal root touch up i use is the spray that literally covers the greys instantly.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 26/08/2024 01:11

I'm hitting 44 next year and the greys keep on coming...my hair is very dark brown, so I've said "sod it" and decided to embrace the new grey me.

My DH is called Gray (his nickname), and he went grey years ago. I'm just going to get with the greys and go grey lol 😆 I refuse to dye my hair for the next 30 odd years 😅 Imagine what you would spend each month on hair dye over all those years...🤣😳🤣

YourSpleenIsDamp · 26/08/2024 01:18

I've been using this and it seems to be helping to blend in the greys. amzn.eu/d/iFRBzuh

PorkPieForStarters · 26/08/2024 01:38

I'm a similar age and am embracing my greys now and growing my natural hair out. My hair grows really quickly and I cannot be bothered with dying my roots every three weeks for the rest of my life and worrying whether my regrowth is noticeable in between. Who am I doing it for anyway?

I'd rather start growing it out now while I still don't gave a huge amount of grey, as the contrast with my dyed hair will be so stark at that point. Now it's growing out I can see I still have a lot of my original dark colour and there's a lot less grey than it appears when I have new root regrowth.

I'm also a little bit over the thinking that getting older is a bad thing!

Singleandproud · 26/08/2024 02:44

I don't dye my hair, I think long streaks of grey/silver in dark hair is better than a grey halo of roots. Grow it out and go natural like Queen Letizia

Or go for more colours to highlight with blondes, coppers etc and disguise it a bit

I think marketing started long ago, that's why we are all suckers and dye our hair! I bet if someone did find a solution, then the hair dye companies would do everything they could to stop it, much like electric car inventors have had from petrol companies

In saying that the tide is turning, men don't seem to due their hair at all and I'm noticing many more younger women letting their hair go grey

I agree. Women have more choice now. Like many women had to wear heals for their jobs because that was normal. But so many women were in agony feet wise. But you couldn't choose flats. Now you can.

Sweetteaplease · 26/08/2024 03:38

@orangalang yes, hopefully the more we see it the more natural and normal it becomes

I hope so. Still a very long way off in my opinion. Women on TV are so standard on the whole, perfect hair, body.

queenprincess · 26/08/2024 03:55

I believe copper and b vitamins can help reverse grey? might be worth looking into foods with copper and b vits, perhaps supplements

Greategret · 26/08/2024 05:07

I tried all that B vitamin stuff when I started going grey as a teenager. Didn't make any difference at all. I just have my hair a light blonde - a hairdresser stripped out the colour with streaking to give the hair a lighter look overall and started dyeing the roots a slightly lighter colour. Gradually as I got greyer the base colour got lighter.

I too had very dark - near black - hair. I can tell you though if you are greying, you should probably lighten the shade slightly. After a certain point, it can look very hard and unnatural even if it was your original colour. My hairdresser told me at the ripe old age of 25 that the original dark colour was starting to look too dark and she was absolutely right.
