Age 41 & all my hair regrowth is grey. What can I do to reverse this?

I can't afford a root touch up every 6 weeks. It's seriously depressing, all my regrowth is grey, I have dark brown hair... Can this be reversed naturally?

Nobody has to do anything.
I found dyeing my hair he most faff of all though, even when younger and had little grey, and cannot be bothered hiding my true colour.

Well no. But if I didn’t I’d look bloody awful. I don’t want to look like I’ve given up.
Like it or not, people have a certain perception of how ‘older’ folk look. And usually it’s with grey hair.

Hairdresser every 4 weeks ,£120 ,worth every penny

Embrace the grey and look 70 at 41?

Oi! I've been going grey since I was a teen. Got fed up with dyeing it. I don't look 70! She's right - it's very freeing. The key is to keep a sharp cut, IMHO. It looks great when I wear the right colours.

I'm 44 and I'm getting whites not greys. I keep plucking them out. Not sure at what point I concede.

I was happy with every four weeks but when it went to two weeks I just couldn’t do it anymore and luckily I am really starting to like it now 😊

I use eyebrow powder and brush to do the bits at the sides that come through. You can buy it especially for hair but I find a cheap eyebrow powder a good temporary fix

LadyInDecline · 26/08/2024 21:33

I'm 56 and my very dark brown hair started going grey in my 30s. Six months ago I decided I had finally had enough of dying my hair and have grown it out. I love my hair now and it is in far better condition.
The hardest part is the in-between stage!!@

Powderblue1 · 26/08/2024 22:11

I have dark brown hair with blonde balayage so I can't dye my hair myself as it's hard to then have the blonde put over permanent at home dye. Instead I visit the hairdressers every 7 weeks. I use the L'Oréal root touch up spray to cover greys in my parting as they grow in and then at week 4 I use a semi permanent hair dye in my roots and an at home toner to freshen up my blonde and get me to week 7.

If I was just brown I'd do my roots at home myself. It's so easy to do.

I’m 48 (but was 43 when I stopped dyeing) and I don’t think I look 70. As others have said, if it was more normalised and women weren’t judged then it would be a much better situation.

You look lovely and nothing like 70, that PP was being ridiculous.

Mine is coming through a similar grey to yours so I hope mine ends up looking like that!

onwardsup4 · 27/08/2024 09:42

It's not just about being judged it's a preference and perfectly ok to not want to be grey in your 40s. It's not a new thing. My nan dyed blonde and it looked lovely until she died age 90. 10 years ago

Absolutely it’s a preference and I daresay I’d not be grey if I wasn’t allergic to dye. But it’s like everything else - we’re conditioned to believe that being grey makes you look old, so let’s not pretend it’s not influenced by companies trying to make money off us and patriarchal ‘ideals’.

Thank you. I’m really lucky in that mine is soft and shiny. My mum’s is still the same, (although hers is white as she was blonde) so I’m hoping mine stays like this. I know for a lot of people it tends to get more coarse and dry.

I use a purple shampoo once a week to give it a boost.

onwardsup4 · 27/08/2024 10:15

@GreyRooted on this one I'd say it's not just conditioning . It looks great on some people but for me it does make me look older it's not my imagination. I'm getting it at the front and sides and when it's due to be coloured there's no doubt it ages me

SweetShreddedCoconut · 27/08/2024 10:30

Wash in colorants from Superdrug . I just leave them on for a couple of hours . They gradually fade and you don't get that regrowth line .

SweetShreddedCoconut · 27/08/2024 10:33

I think it's not so much the Grey that is ageing but the haircut and make up is what ages people.

hobbcat · 27/08/2024 18:18

Think of the cash you’ll save. Gray hair is so normal nowadays

Alexaremovethenotifications · 27/08/2024 18:20

I feel your pain. I decided to go lighter and my natural colour is very dark brown. I do suit it and it has hidden the greys but it’s a pain having it done frequently.

my sister in law has let hers go grey and it has aged her massively. You would think she was her children’s grandma. If you can get away with it or accept it, great. I can not 😬

Maxstress3 · 27/08/2024 18:22

Find a way of wearing scarves in a trendy fashion. Hair covered, problem solved and if you want ti leave it out any time just touch it up with the spray.

circular1985 · 27/08/2024 18:27

You can't reverse it. I'm same age with black hair and have to do my roots every 4 weeks as my hair grows really quickly. I use Live box dye and in between the Loreal root spray. The spray is ok but as it's black you need to be careful not to touch your hair.

nappysan · 27/08/2024 18:38

I went blonder to reduce my grey roots. Still need a colour every 4 weeks at the most.
Find a wonderful hairdresser as you will be spending a lot of time with them, mine is a gem

TheTruthWillSetYouFreeMaybe · 27/08/2024 18:42

My reddish brown hair started going grey in my 40s. I don’t want to go grey or blond. It’s a pain and the roots now seem to grown thru quickly. I use the Loreal root touch up (sometimes use 2 boxes for whole head if I leave too long but as you only need to leav in for 10 minutes it’s ok) Sometimes use the spray (magic retouch) and then every 2-3 months use Preference. Now notice that I have a couple of grey eyebrow hairs . I wish I could ‘embrace the grey’ but not ready yet

DisabledDemon · 27/08/2024 18:49

I went blonde when the grey became noticeable and it was a good choice as my skin tone had changed also. I use a Superdrug silver permanent dye, which keeps the brassiness out every four weeks and a blonde shampoo. Much easier than continuing to pretend it's still red!

Sadly I don’t think they have invented anything to reverse greying! I started going grey really young but now in my 50s I must be 70/80% grey. I use Clairol root touch up Dye. I buy two boxes (always on offer) I buy two different shades and mix them. For me shades 6 & 7 which matches my light brown/dark blonde hair very well and looks natural. I have thick hair and two boxes is enough to do from ear to ear. I am really confident now sectioning and covering the roots. It takes 20 minutes or so to apply and I leave for a little longer than they suggest-about 15 minutes. I do it every 3 weeks and then when my local salon has a colour sale I go and get it all done professionally. (3 or 4 times a year) works well for me and costs a fraction of what it would be if I had to go to the salon every time. Plus the whole process takes about an hour rather than hours in the salon! Definitely recommend-imo grey hair is just plain aging for women unless you’re super beautiful!
