Age 41 & all my hair regrowth is grey. What can I do to reverse this?

I can't afford a root touch up every 6 weeks. It's seriously depressing, all my regrowth is grey, I have dark brown hair... Can this be reversed naturally?

@Shezlong wait til it’s fully grey. My naturally grey hair looks no where near as nice as my chestnut brown colour did. It’s not about trying to cheat your age, it’s about looking washed out.

Nottodaty · 26/08/2024 09:30

Some people can really embrace the grey and carry it well. My SIL being one of one of them - stunning the way the grey has grown and she carry’s it well.

I don’t - it grows all around my face- it’s a dirty grey colour. And slowly it’s now growing through my hair. They grow curly upwards at first. For now I’m at the hairdressers every 5/6 weeks.

I can go lighter and will do slowly. I had white hair that slowly went darker as I went through my teenage years - if it could be that white colour again it would be ok - not this horrible grey grey colour I am now :(

I truly believe that women should have the choice so I'm not pro-grey or pro-colouring it. But I do think it's possible to change your make up and clothing colour palettes to avoid looking washed out if you do embrace the grey.

A few years ago I was going grey quite fast.
I had a few health, so the doctors did loads of tests and one of the results was a lack of Vit D.
I did some mega doses and now take vit d every day. My hair went back to being brown.
We are a few years on and I have a few greys and I am in my 50s.
Im not saying this will work for you but you could get your vit D tested or maybe take a low dose tablet and see.

I do a garnier box, leave for 25 mins on roots and then spread the rest on the rest of the hair for another 10 mins. Works great, have done it for years!

I do the same, mine is light brown and does fade blonder (am going to go up a shade next time) and regrowth blends well plus its affordable. I stopped having my hair done during the pandemic and have never gone back. I used to have bright red but with the greys it became unmanageable and unaffordable so box dye has been a huge help. I tend to stick with one shade and bulk buy on offer and redo it every 6 weeks.

Bullpuckey · 26/08/2024 09:37

Ok so if you want to ‘reverse grey’ that guy that wants to ‘live forever’ (blueprint) has actually done this.

But his natural colour looks too harsh on a forty-something male, so I’m not sure it’s an improvement tbh

Embrace the grey and look 70 at 41?

Why would OP look 70 if they are 41? Hair naturally goes grey much earlier than 70.

I’ve embraced the grey but am booked in to have some colours put in in a few weeks.
I do think it makes me look my age, not necessarily older. I just look drab tbh so to a certain extent you have to ramp up the make up, sounds a cliche but a bright vibrant lipstick does wonders as does some cream blusher, think more carefully about the clothes you wear etc. I had mine cut into a sharp bob and loads of people said it looked great, in the mirror close up I liked it, but catching my reflection inadvertently was a shock and not a nice one.
You might find your grey isn’t as extensive as you thought once it’s grown out. It does look more obvious against coloured hair but once it’s grown out it’s not that grey. Highlights might be the way to blend it in ?

This.. I find it only looks non aging when it's teamed with great fashion and bright makeup and a great cut. Which many people can't be bothered to do but I saw it a lot in London and they looked amazing.
I'm natural blonde and always dyed it black so even though I won't naturally go grey until much later, I think the black will start to look too harsh around 50 so I plan to grow the blonde out and go pastel pinks and purples etc. I'll miss being dark though, it's my look ☹️

EleanorRavenclaw · 26/08/2024 09:44

I’m 5 weeks into ditching the dye. I’m 53 and naturally brunette and so sick of the roots coming through literally a week after colouring. I go to the hairdresser and do root touch up in between and feel so much better not having to worry about it. I’ve got long hair and it’s going to take about 3 years to get to my current length but I’ll persevere and go cold turkey. My hair is in good condition and soft so I’ll go to the hairdresser and have a treatment and trim very few months to keep on top of it.
I genuinly give zero fucks about what other people think. I’ve told them at work and got it out of the way and told them not to take the piss 🤣. I don’t dress frumpy and people tell me I don’t look anything like my age so I’m really hoping I stick with it. Now I’ve made the decision I feel so much better. I couldn’t keep dying it forever the cost and time is too much. There are some really good ladies on insta that I follow going through the same journey that will keep me going 🤞

sweetgingercat · 26/08/2024 09:47

Embrace the grey. It’s incredibly
beautiful and matches your skin tone better. Once I stopped dying it, my hair got in better condition and grew much longer and more wavy. Now I have long wavy grey hair and get lots of compliments.

Ah yes the funky coloured clothes 😂

LuminousCrystalFox · 26/08/2024 09:51

I love Rosa Saito’s hair, not entirely relevant as she is around 70-ish, but it looks so good. Gives me hope for my greying hair 😄

I just meant, not grey ones really 😎

Fimbledore · 26/08/2024 09:57

I buzzed all mine off. I don't look 70, but my mum said I looked like a convict 🤣

GameOfJones · 26/08/2024 10:03

I'm in my late 30s and the greys have been coming for a couple of years now. I haven't dyed my hair for over 10 years and I refuse to start now so I'll be embracing it and am just letting myself go grey naturally.

I think it's much more common now for younger women to be embracing the grey. My SIL is 40 and had lots of grey coming through so had her hair dyed grey at the hairdresser as a one off and is now letting the dye grow out. Other friends are also going grey naturally. I think the tide is turning on grey hair automatically meaning "old".

TheSingingBean · 26/08/2024 10:07

Another vote for embracing the grey.

I won’t pretend I didn’t miss my very dark brown hair at first but I have honestly had more compliments about my hair since being completely grey than I ever had before.

The texture changes too, so I am now able to wear a completely different style (longer, wavy, grown out fringe) which a stranger at the hospital the other month told me was ‘stunning’ - no one ever said that when I was a brunette!

I have light skin and grey green eyes (and sparse eyebrows because of hypothyroidism) so I have bold glasses and use more eye makeup to stop me looking invisible, but other than that the benefits of not dyeing hair totally outweigh the disadvantages.

godmum56 · 26/08/2024 10:10

Be grateful. mine started to fall out and has never regrown.

Wexone · 26/08/2024 10:28

Ask your hairdresser to start lighting your hair to blend it in so not a obvious. Am similar - i use color wow or spray or the root touch up in between hairdressers. I get now every two months. I am sorry i cant embrace the grey yet. I am only 42. Only some women can pull it off i think. My sis inlaw is only 10 years older than, has grey witches hair, at family events and funerals am often mistaken for her daughter 😂She got a wash in dye for our wedding and she catully look fabulous really brighten up her face and took years off her. Same with a women in work recently, was full grey, cam in one day last week after getting like blond through it, really lifted her face and she siad tome she felt so good about it too. Go for the grey look if your happy, however if it was me i would talk to your hairdresser for a change to ease maintenance

TheYearOfSmallThings · 26/08/2024 10:31

On Mumsnet everyone will tell you to embrace the grey and you will look amazing. In reality the few women I know who have gone grey in their forties are no-nonsense outdoor types who don't mind looking older than their age as long as they look neat and healthy. Most people colour it a bit longer, and it sounds as if you aren't ready to look in the mirror and see a grey haired woman just yet, so I'm afraid L'Oréal is your best option.

I've been using this and it seems to be helping to blend in the greys. amzn.eu/d/iFRBzuh

Ooh @YourSpleenIsDamp that looks interesting, does it work?! I have mine dyed at the hairdressers every 6 weeks and tend to use a root touch up after about 3, it is so depressing 😞

Loubelle70 · 26/08/2024 10:45

I didn't start going grey until middle 40s...temples first, im 52 and loads more greys at temple , hair line, but not at roots allover. I do dye hair every couple months but i hide temples by having longer hair 👍. I like dark hair but u think as more grey starts i will go lighter xxx

mrsrobin · 26/08/2024 10:49

Has anyone used the Shrine Drop It Toner (you put some drops of colour in any conditioner and leave on for a while) to blend in some greys? I have been wondering about trying the Caramel Blonde to see what happens.

I tried the Plantur and it sort of worked in that it did deposit some colour. Unfortunately it was that slightly brownish-ginger colour Cliff Richard rocked for many years, so I stopped using it.

£8 box dye every 6-8 weeks. I am great at doing it having done it so many times!

Yes. I do this. They are easy to use these days and don't drip.
