Age 41 & all my hair regrowth is grey. What can I do to reverse this?

I can't afford a root touch up every 6 weeks. It's seriously depressing, all my regrowth is grey, I have dark brown hair... Can this be reversed naturally?

See the Google search results, I've had experience of this....Worth considering checking for nutritional deficiencies x

Most women I know go blonde when the grey starts - the ubiquitous blonde bob is very popular amongst women of a certain age.

Personally I’m embracing the grey in my chestnut brown hair. use special grey shampoos to make it look more silver than grey, and love the effect.

I’m 48 (but was 43 when I stopped dyeing) and I don’t think I look 70. As others have said, if it was more normalised and women weren’t judged then it would be a much better situation.

Inspiring 😍

Once I saw a product in Boots late 90s by Schwartz claiming to reverse grey but it seemed to disappear

Nearandfaraway · 27/08/2024 19:48

I let mine grow out and I definitely don't look 70! It's come out a really cool greige colour and people always ask where I got it done. I love it. It's also very freeing.

It's actually totally normal to have grey hair in your 40s, despite what Loreal and hairdressers tell you so you spend lots of money on it. As a pp said- the more we see it, the more normal it becomes.

Embrace the grey and look 70 at 41?

Only because people die their hair so no one has any idea when it’s natural to go grey….

Rockhopper81 · 27/08/2024 20:25

I've had grey hair growing through since my 20s (early 40s now), in one place initially (think Rogue in X-Men, or a mallen streak), now more peppered throughout, albeit still more concentrated in one 'strip' - my hair is very dark brown, so it's been noticeable (an advantage of blonde hair - bottle or natural - is that the grey doesn't show as much).

I dyed it once, many years ago, but I do not have the ability to commit to that, so now I've let it just grow. Occasionally I 'dye' it something funky like blue/pink/purple, as it only shows on the grey, so I have coloured streaks for a little while!

And I certainly don't look 70, thank you very much! I expect ultimately it will be somewhere between silver and salt'n'pepper all over, if family lineage is anything to go by. 🙂

I started going grey in my 20s, I just let it go. Very happy with it.

PeepDeBeaul · 27/08/2024 20:55

I developed grey "Rogue" streaks in my fringe aged 32...at 42 all the hair around my face is grey but nothing beyond that. I've found folk take me far more seriously now I've embraced my grey and I've had so many people say that it really works on me. Others think I dye it this way...I let that myth perpetuate.

I certainly don't look 70 at 42.

I find it so frustrating that women are expected to hide the aging process...why should we?

jasminocereusbritannicus · 28/08/2024 07:01

I’m about to be 60. My hair is a mid brown, but I don’t colour it. I do have lots of silver streaks coming through now, but I might as well just brazen it out . I’ve not coloured my hair before, so no reason to start now. I guess I’m lucky it just looks like shiny hi-lights and is very gradual. By the time I’m actually completely grey , no- one will have really noticed because I’ve done it steadily and naturally. I have my hair cut in a short back and bob style .People are surprised at my age.

You can't turn back the tide. Embrace it. I did in my early 40's and it was liberating.
Free from the 6- 8 week dread that the 'roots were showing' and action was needed. So many of us are slaves to the dye box. If you do grow out your dye or chop off the dyed bits be prepared for the unwanted opinions of others who try and save you from your own decision making. ' you're too young to be grey' ' what about blonde? ' ' oh I could never do that!' Do not let them project their insecurities on to you! My close friends were supportive. Others were just plain rude. But when the jet black ageing dye was all gone- Free! Meeting anyone new - they were never sure of my age... not like a post I just read on here..' you will look 70 at age 41' - what nonsense. Me changing the look of my head, gave me such an insight in to what goes on in other people's heads- conformity/ fears/ ageing- blah blah blah. I get a few compliments . I have never regretted it and if the urge came back I would consider dye again, but it is a good to check out what colour your natural look is - you will be pleasantly surprised I'm sure.

Gardengirl108 · 28/08/2024 09:43

Another vote for embracing the grey! I went for it 5 years ago and it was the best decision for me. The final straw of touching up silver roots (on very dark brown hair) was when the need to do it went from 6 weeks to 4 weeks to 2 weeks. Never regretted it.

AllieDeCorbeau · 28/08/2024 09:52

Embrace the grey

Are you having a laugh?! I’m early 50s. I look it. I’m fine about it. I definitely don’t look 70 just because my hair is grey.

Jeclop · 28/08/2024 10:31

I am also extremely grey in my mid thirties. Started going grey in my teens! 😬

Those of you who said your hair was dark and have decided to go blonde to hide the greys, can you share some pics? I have very dark brown hair and just can't picture being blonde 🤔

Whoowhoopitstbesoundofthedapolice · 28/08/2024 10:34

Go for a full grey/silver or even arctic white colour ... get ahead of it sort of thing so when the regrowth comes in it's not so bad.

I'm 35 with silver/grey hair and it's been the best thing ever - I had very dark hair since birth.

I love your glasses !

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 28/08/2024 10:53

I henna my hair. I like it as the white hairs take the colour much more so it looks a bit highlighted rather than a mono blockish colour.

SummerGardenFlowers · 28/08/2024 10:58

I started going grey in my twenties, naturally fairly dark but I have it dyed blonde now. The texture though is heading towards something ridiculous - wiry hair that sticks up all over the place like a shaggy grey dog. I'm only bloody 40!!!

Notenoughtime23 · 28/08/2024 20:42

I’ve been going grey since I was in my teens and now late 30’s I’m completely grey. I’ve just started getting highlights and even though my roots are visible 6 weeks later it is so much less obvious so I can hang it out. I think the plan is to gradually go lighter and eventually just embrace the grey. L’Oréal also do a root touch up spray that is great for inbetween dyes or Superdrug own dry shampoo for brunettes if you have darker hair

Proudbitch · 28/08/2024 20:47

Zoflorabore · 26/08/2024 01:07

Super dark hair here op, almost black and it’s been like yours since I was late twenties and I’m now 46. I use the L’Oreal root touch up all the time as my roots need doing every 3 weeks as my hair has always grown ridiculously fast. I use a decent box dye on the roots and it looks really healthy.

I remember hearing my dad saying something when I was younger and was a bit horrified by it but it’s on going to happen one day. He said ( not to me! )” wait until your pubes go grey and then you can moan”

there are so many product’s about now to help with re-growth. I won’t be embracing the grey. My hair is waist length and I like it dark as I’m assuming you to too or wouldn’t have asked the question…

edited to add that the L’Oreal root touch up i use is the spray that literally covers the greys instantly.

Edited

I tried the L’Oréal root touch up spray - it melted down my face and I had black streaks running down me 😭

If you want to grow it out, wear a beret then get a short hair cut when possible. Hair dye is not good for the scalp, or the bathroom and your towels.

LindorDoubleChoc · 28/08/2024 21:16

You can't reverse the growth of grey hair. Odd question.

ObsidianTree · 28/08/2024 21:18

Grow it out and box die it ash grey! If I ever start growing out grey, this is my plan!

Colinfromaccounts · 28/08/2024 21:28

Get a little plastic bowl and an applicator brush and only use half of the box dye each time, it makes it miles cheaper.
