Really worried about the possibility of “pay per mile”

Yorkiepud2614 · 23/08/2024 08:43

I’ve been seeing more and more about this new proposal “pay per mile” that would replace car duty (I think). Which the average household bill somewhere around £450 - £600. Lots of reports that it may come in this October.
Living in the Highlands this would completely cripple us. Do people really think the new government will bring this change in?

I'd say the same Tory bot who posted the pensions raid bollocks is posting this thread.

Utter shite.

The poorest in society can’t afford cars. They are more likely to rely on public transport, as are those who are too old or young to drive.

An extra £600 per year to keep on driving wherever the hell you like is pretty bloody cheap.

Where do people keep saying this?

A lot of the poorest in society have to drive. They buy cheap cars, bangers and struggle to keep it on the road. Some people can’t afford not to have a car.

Because the alternative is to not be able to get to work because buses and public transport in places like where I live is so bad.

You can drive to nearest city in 25 mins. My best friend had to get a car because it took 2 buses and nearly 2 hours both ways. And because the buses are only once a hour she had to be a work a hour early or risk being late. When you add in the additional childcare and cost of the buses it was cheaper for her to own a small cheap car. And she is saving huge amounts of time.

He husband is lucky that plenty of his colleagues pass his house on the way so they share the costs. But it means he can’t move job.

Plenty of my neighbours have had to get in to debt to pay for MOTs or work doing. Because without their car, they can’t work.

So you have zero evidence for this. Link?

Are you joking? Are you able to google “pay per mile” and hit news? Do you require it handed to you on a plate?

The Tory propaganda bots are in full swing.

So far we've had:

  • they're raiding your pensions
  • they're charging you per mile to drive
  • they're stifling free speech and I'm scared and devastated
MouseofCommons · 23/08/2024 09:54

They can't penalise rural residents, that'll have to be worked out. But equally, people need to get out of their cars and use their legs a bit more for short trips and errands.

I am not a bot thank you. I am a 34 year old living in the highlands so commutes around 20,000 a year all over Scotland as an events organiser.

It’s been rumoured for decades now. The initial thoughts were black boxes, but everyone complained about the government having ability to track people like that.

I don’t think it’s a bad way to manage the loss of fuel revenue. It needs to be managed (unlike ulez) and people with ICE shouldn’t be paying twice.
Number plate thefts will go through the roof and I don’t know how you manage that or even track that.

The bit about black boxes always makes me laugh.
Most people now have smartphones so the technology is already there to track people. I don't know why they think they're interesting enough to track.

MoonAndStarsAndSky · 23/08/2024 09:56

They don't need to track you in real time so wouldn't need infrastructure on roads. They can just check the mileage of your car at each service or MOT and charge accordingly.

You stated the thread so it's simple netiquette courtesy to provide some evidence.

Oh, and that's not evidence.

DrinkElephants · 23/08/2024 09:57

I think if they brought it in now there would be a lot of uproar but I think it makes sense to some extent as if everyone had electric cars there would be no tax revenue for fuel duty or road tax so in the long term it is probably needed, but I don’t think enough people have electric cars yet.

I read about something online that I was worried about. Is that not allowed now? Isn’t that what mums net is for? Getting other peoples take on something?

Also in the highlands, currently do a 200mile round trip for my cancer treatment. They can get to fuck if they introduce that, will destroy so many highland areas that are already suffering from depopulation.

When we parked in the car park of our oncology unit yesterday, a notification popped into the phone saying something along the lines of: you have arrived in our car park, there’s ANPR, set up this payment app, put your card details in and pay when you leave. Me and dh were flabbergasted. It’s a brand new system, just introduced.

In 2014, when DM had cancer, she was given a parking free pass for the (different) hospital.

Now in 2024, they have some sort of tech that messages your phone demanding payment as soon as you park! With threats ANPR and fines if you can’t do it. (It was difficult to actually pay). My PILs recently died, they didn’t have smartphones at all as they didn’t know how to work them. They would have probably cried seeing the signs saying you get fined if you don’t do this app stuff.

Cancer patients are routinely crapped on.

Feelingstrange2 · 23/08/2024 09:59

The idea makes great headlines but anyone living rurally knows the road technology isn't developed sufficiently to track mileage. Even when the main routes have those posts on them, our rural lanes don't!

They would have to do it using something like the MOT system for mileage with adaptions for new cars and for sales/purchases mid year. It makes far more sense to reband cars, revise road tax rates, and be done with it using the current system.

Frowningprovidence · 23/08/2024 09:59

There has been a flurry of press like auto express, gb news etc discussing this. There has also been parliamentary committees considering this proposal fairly recently. It might be scaremongering to suggest it will be in place by October, but it's no point pretending this isn't seriously being looked at as an option eventually.

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 23/08/2024 09:59

Ok so what we’ve got;

add new cameras - just look at ulez and other clean zones.

mot certificate - first 3 years issue and mileage correction issues. They often float the ideas of changing mots and it often comes down to not trusting inspectors (unless they decide they want to)

black box and tracking - already proven an issue and rejected - not to mention the riots would be back.

number plate thefts will be rife, just look at the altered plates in clean air zones.

what have we got left?

this isn’t coming in any time soon - and not October.

surely the obvious way would be to tax charging, it would also solve the issue of businesses not being able to pay for electric from home charging.

GustyFinknottle · 23/08/2024 09:59

FountainsOfPens · 23/08/2024 09:05

How on earth are they going to track this in the highlands? Seems like something the infrastructure is not ready for tbh.

Your MOT certificate records your mileage.

Georgyporky · 23/08/2024 09:59

Does Scotland have a choice?

I thought they made a lot of their own rules now.

Which they can better do if ether's something to "take" on, ie. information.

echt · 23/08/2024 10:00

There's not either.

Emily1583 · 23/08/2024 10:01

It will cripple a lot of businesses that use multiple vehicles to go about their business.

I'm guessing they will now ask for a miles tally with each annual MOT.

It's going to be a vote loser if this government brings it in that's for sure.

track and trace apps fell on their arse for the same reason - even though your phone already does it

When was the parliamentary committee held? Its been held since 7th July?

The Express refers to a past London committee and a comment from Jeremy Hunts chief of staff.

There are groups of car enthusiasts who think this would save them money running multiple vehicles.
Instead of paying tax for their sporty little number that comes out for 1000 miles a year. They just pay for that 1000 miles

I really hope it comes in. Motoring is so unreasonably cheap - compare how little fuel duty has gone up vs train tickets. It’s an absolute scandal - people need to pay what it costs to keep roads in good repair. Why shouldn’t people pay for what they use?

Unreasonably cheap? How? In comparison to USA, India and many other countries, we pay a fortune.

What about the disabled? As if it isn't expensive enough to be impaired.
