Really worried about the possibility of “pay per mile”

I’ve been seeing more and more about this new proposal “pay per mile” that would replace car duty (I think). Which the average household bill somewhere around £450 - £600. Lots of reports that it may come in this October.
Living in the Highlands this would completely cripple us. Do people really think the new government will bring this change in?

@parkrun500club I think they increase it gradually. I have a 330e and am part of a Facebook group (I don't know why exactly but as I was getting to know the car it seemed a good idea) and from what people have commented, the older ones that used to be £0 are now £35.

The newer EVs and hybrids likely have to pay a surcharge of around £500 for the first 5/6years for that exact reason. It's over a certain OTR but obviously almost all new hybrids and electrics are over the designated price.

I do agree though that it would be fair to introduce something for electric vehicles as the government surely can’t afford to just forget fuel duty when more people switch to electric.
However, the infrastructure for charging points still isn’t there for many people and I can’t see that changing soon.
