Awful Ending to our Holiday

DH and I have just had a lovely holiday abroad. Left our hotel yesterday in a taxi to go to the airport which is approximately an hour from the hotel. We were about 2 miles from the airport when the hotel contacted us to say when the cleaners were cleaning our room ready for the next occupants they found we had forgotten to empty our safe containing our passports and some other personal possessions. Can't believe we did this as we are usually so organised.

Hotel were fab and organised a taxi to bring the stuff to us and meet us half way. We managed to get our flight with 5 minutes to spare. But when we checked the envelope with our passports in I noticed a little box with some bits of jewellery was missing. DH said perhaps he had packed the box in the case. But we are home and unpacked but no sign of my jewellery. We will phone the hotel shortly and I'm just hoping the cleaners missed the box in the back of the safe. I NEVER take jewellery on holiday but for some reason this year I did. It's some lovely jewellery that DH bought for my 60th birthday and I'm so upset and feel such a fool.

I just hope they find the box and we can arrange to have my jewellery returned.

Fingers crossed they find it for you 💐

Icequeen01 · 23/08/2024 08:58

Thank you. DH has just spoken to hotel and they are going to check the room for us. We have to phone them back later.

I'm so cross/upset with ourselves 🥲

Any luck?

This kind of happened to a friend of ours who now always puts one of the pair of shoes she intends on travelling home in into the safe so she can’t go anywhere without going into the safe to get the shoe and her belongings.

Made me laugh but what a great idea!!

Sourisblanche · 24/08/2024 08:01

Oh no poor you. That must feel really galling. Hope you hear something positive from the hotel today.

Dontjudgeme101 · 24/08/2024 08:18

Fingers crossed that they find it. 💐💐💐

ManchesterRoad · 24/08/2024 08:37

Don’t beat yourself up - these things happen. I really hope the hotel finds it for you 💐

Terea · 24/08/2024 09:26

I hope they find it too. But trying to look for a slight positive - at least the jewellery was newly purchased so there will be a receipt to claim off insurance, and it wasn’t a family heirloom. Good luck op.

I once left my moneybelt with thousands in it under a pillow in a hotel. Cleaners handed it in, all fine. Fingers crossed for you.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 24/08/2024 10:36

Oh, my heart sank for you, OP. How awful. I too hope that the box is found and safely returned to you.

Icequeen01 · 24/08/2024 10:49

Thought I would update you. We contacted the hotel who spoke to the cleaners who said they had not seen anything in the safe apart from our passports and my purse. The person we spoke to said when the new occupants of the room returned to their room they would ask if they could,d check the safe again. The safe is very low down and the box my jewellery was in was black so I was hoping perhaps it had just been missed.

Guess what ....... they found it!!!

I can't tell you how pleased I was when my DH received the photo via WhatsApp from the hotel. They have been nothing short of amazing in how they have helped us. Now for the fun of getting the jewellery home. I've checked and there is a FedEx office in Chania (we were in Crete) and our hotel is about 50 mins from there so hopefully this is how we will be able to courier it home. We have asked the hotel if they are able to help before we speak to FedEx ourselves.

Thanks so much for all your encouraging posts. I was so upset even though I knew I could replace it all. It wouldn't have felt the same.

Fantastic update, OP, so pleased for you. That is also a great tip about the one shoe in the safe! Grin

candycane222 · 24/08/2024 10:53

I hope you can leave a glowing review for the hotel and its amazing staff on every travel board going. What incredible service!!

Icequeen01 · 24/08/2024 10:53

My DH is laughing his head off about the shoe in the safe. He has size 13 feet so his shoe wouldn't but I pointed out that mine would!

Oh don't you worry, we absolutely will be. The hotel was lovely without all this on top so they will have THE best review. I just want to find out the names of the two members of staff who have been helping us so I can name them in person.

If you could give the hotel publicity you should, they deserve it.
And if you could afford it send a €50 or €20 euro note to the cleaners who searched for your passports and jewellery.
If you can't afford it put a couple of quid in a charity box of your choice

Xyz1234567 · 24/08/2024 10:56

Yes, you definitely need to name drop the hotel !

I'm so pleased they found it op! What a great hotel!

90yomakeuproom · 24/08/2024 11:00

Why don't you ask them to save it and go there for another holiday in a few weeks? Any excuse for a holiday!

Oh how I wish I could but I work in a school so I’m back to work on 2nd 🥲

You can book a FedEx collection from the hotel, so no need for them to have to travel to the FedEx location.

What a relief for you to have them safely found!

90yomakeuproom · 24/08/2024 11:25

Oh bloody hell, same as me.

Have you left your jewellery behind after your holiday too?
