Awful Ending to our Holiday

DH and I have just had a lovely holiday abroad. Left our hotel yesterday in a taxi to go to the airport which is approximately an hour from the hotel. We were about 2 miles from the airport when the hotel contacted us to say when the cleaners were cleaning our room ready for the next occupants they found we had forgotten to empty our safe containing our passports and some other personal possessions. Can't believe we did this as we are usually so organised.

Hotel were fab and organised a taxi to bring the stuff to us and meet us half way. We managed to get our flight with 5 minutes to spare. But when we checked the envelope with our passports in I noticed a little box with some bits of jewellery was missing. DH said perhaps he had packed the box in the case. But we are home and unpacked but no sign of my jewellery. We will phone the hotel shortly and I'm just hoping the cleaners missed the box in the back of the safe. I NEVER take jewellery on holiday but for some reason this year I did. It's some lovely jewellery that DH bought for my 60th birthday and I'm so upset and feel such a fool.

I just hope they find the box and we can arrange to have my jewellery returned.

I clicked on this post thinking I was going to hear a horror story. What I found was a wonderful story about a resort hotel with a great customer service response. Thank you for sharing.

@Tiredandmenopausal We went bed and breakfast as there are some lovely restaurants within 2 minutes of the hotel. Apart from breakfast, which was very good and had absolutely everything you could possibly want, we didn't eat in the hotel as we prefer to eat out.

So I've just booked the transportation and it cost £53 and that's for delivery within 2 business working days which I think is amazing. I'm keeping everything crossed the jewellery now turns up!

I am very happy to share the name of this fabulous hotel. It is the Almyrida Residence Hotel and here is a link

@Icequeen01 - does that include insurance for your jewellery?

I must admit I was not expecting the outcome I have had. It warms my heart that there are still honest people in the world and places like this hotel which literally pull out all the stops to help their customers. I read the reviews on the hotel before we booked and one of the things that stood out to me was how many people mentioned the first class staff. It reminded me of a hotel we stay in Sorrento (which I can also highly recommend!) and why we eventually chose it and I am so pleased we did 😊

@L0bstersLass No it doesn't as I figured that the jewellery is already covered under our house insurance if it does go missing so couldn't see the point of paying twice - unless I am missing something?

That really is great! And if you're naming names of good hotels in sorrento I'm all earsGrin

What lovely honest Staff the Hotel has. Well done them for their honesty.

There ARE still good people around. Lovely to hear you got your sentimental stuff back, @Icequeen01 .

I once left all my underwear in a hotel in York. The hotel was manky, DH became ill with vomiting on the last night. I packed everything and was careful to pack jewellery and all valuables. Got home after driving for 4 hours on 1 hour of sleep and realised my scans were all still in the wee drawer in the room. Didn’t contact them to request primarks finest back lol!

Sometimes jewellery is only covered by your house insurance if it’s either at home, or you’re wearing it. It’s probably worth checking before you get it sent to you.

Icequeen01 · 25/08/2024 06:47

@Fluffypuppy1 I did check our home insurance policy when we realised the jewellery wasn't in the case and we are insured for up to £5000 for items temporarily away from the home which I took to mean we would be covered Confused

I did have a look at the reviews for Deliver Back before I booked with them and they looked pretty good so I'm hopeful they will arrive safely.

The only query I have is when I booked the shipment it came up with a message saying Customs Duty would be payable as one of the countries is not in the EU. As the items were not purchased in Greece I didn't think this would be the case. We will have to see. At no point did the transport company ask for the value of the jewellery so I'm not sure how they would be able to work out how much duty we would need to pay (if we are liable to pay it). Perhaps they will contact me.

This kind of happened to a friend of ours who now always puts one of the pair of shoes she intends on travelling home in into the safe so she can’t go anywhere without going into the safe to get the shoe and her belongings.

Made me laugh but what a great idea!!

Excellent idea!!!!!!!!

This is the hotel we have stayed in twice in Sorrento and love. Traditional, family run hotel with fabulous staff and THE most amazing views ever of Versuvius. It's about a 10 minute walk from the centre of Sorrento and on a bit of a hill but I'm no spring chicken and managed it fine.

They do have an annexe which I heard from others guests during our stays is not as nice as the main hotel (and some of the reviews mentioned this as well) so would suggest making sure you do not get allocated a room in there. Also request a higher floor so there is no road noise.

Thanks for that. It was Sorrento where I left my jewellery. I can’t remember the name of the hotel though. I want to go back there to see Pompeii and Herculaneum again so thanks for the recommendation!

OMGitsnotgood · 25/08/2024 07:41

So pleased for you OP.

If we have our car or a hire car we put the car keys in the safe on the last night. It not I usually stick a note on the kettle, but love the shoe idea!

legosnowqueen · 25/08/2024 07:46

That's so heartwarming, great that you've named the hotel too - I'd love to go to Sorrento so good to have a recommendation!

BruceAndNosh · 25/08/2024 07:51

I have left passports in a hotel safe too, thankfully we were only driving to our next location (and they obs cleaned the room promptly) so we only had a hours drive back to the hotel.
I decided on a multicentre holiday that I WOULDN'T bring my favourite "wear it all the time" gold chain. Then 2 days in, I scream "my necklace has gone!"
Queue searching hotel room for ages followed by call to insurance company who agreed we were covered but had to file a police report. 2 hours in police station (with translator from hotel).
Or course the necklace was at home all the time...

TheSilentSister · 24/08/2024 22:36

Don't do the shoe idea. I did and then promptly forgot. I put a small purse in it with my driving licence and cards. Rang the hotel, nothing. I cancelled everything. A month later I went to put on my trainers and yep, there was the purse!

You put the shoe into the safe! Not hide things in a shoe. 😖 You are not going to leave the hotel with one shoe are you.

I have certainly learnt my lesson about taking jewellery on holiday in future!

Hopefully it restored any faith lost in human kindness and honesty. Imagine being the worker, probably on minium wage (if there is anything) who could have made a few months wage by selling your things. Th hotel staff, the next people in your room... shows how honest and respectful the vast majorty of people are.

Icequeen01 · 25/08/2024 08:23

@Secradonugh This is what my DH always says - that the vast majority of people are honest which people always find surprising as he's a retired police officer who was a DCI on the Major Crime Unit for many years 🤣

You owe the hotel big time.

busymomtoone · 25/08/2024 18:15

Surely as people are so often ready to name and shame you should give this hotel a name check ?! They sound amazing. Glad you got your things back. Where is this wonderful hotel?!

I left jewellery in a hotel in Goa - they found it and kindly had it shipped to London for me.
