Awful Ending to our Holiday

DH and I have just had a lovely holiday abroad. Left our hotel yesterday in a taxi to go to the airport which is approximately an hour from the hotel. We were about 2 miles from the airport when the hotel contacted us to say when the cleaners were cleaning our room ready for the next occupants they found we had forgotten to empty our safe containing our passports and some other personal possessions. Can't believe we did this as we are usually so organised.

Hotel were fab and organised a taxi to bring the stuff to us and meet us half way. We managed to get our flight with 5 minutes to spare. But when we checked the envelope with our passports in I noticed a little box with some bits of jewellery was missing. DH said perhaps he had packed the box in the case. But we are home and unpacked but no sign of my jewellery. We will phone the hotel shortly and I'm just hoping the cleaners missed the box in the back of the safe. I NEVER take jewellery on holiday but for some reason this year I did. It's some lovely jewellery that DH bought for my 60th birthday and I'm so upset and feel such a fool.

I just hope they find the box and we can arrange to have my jewellery returned.

Just another update as to how amazing our hotel has been. They sent us an email this afternoon for a transport company they use called Deliver Back which is specifically for people who have left things behind on their holiday. You list each item with a description and which hotel to collect from. I'm just completing the online form and will be interested to see how much it will cost.

What excellent news.

Nightowl1234 · 24/08/2024 21:39

You should post on this thread the name of the hotel so it gets some exposure!

Icequeen01 · 24/08/2024 22:04

So I've just booked the transportation and it cost £53 and that's for delivery within 2 business working days which I think is amazing. I'm keeping everything crossed the jewellery now turns up!

I am very happy to share the name of this fabulous hotel. It is the Almyrida Residence Hotel and here is a link

Great news OP! Just followed the Facebook page & it looks beautiful. What are the prices like?

TheSilentSister · 24/08/2024 22:36

Don't do the shoe idea. I did and then promptly forgot. I put a small purse in it with my driving licence and cards. Rang the hotel, nothing. I cancelled everything. A month later I went to put on my trainers and yep, there was the purse!

The hotel was really lovely and right next to the beach which was perfect. We went for the bed and breakfast option and went for 9 nights - I like to have a full week away and then the other two days as travelling. The hotel cost just under £3000 for the two of us which included flights which, for August, I don't think is bad at all.

Sorry, meant to say we had a Superior Room with partial sea view (we booked too late for a sea view) but honestly we were hardly in our room to care.

Glad to hear your jewellery was found, and how nice.to hear about a hotel giving such great service! We love Crete. I've given the hotel a follow on Instagram, will definitely consider for our next trip.

If you have young children the beach is absolutely perfect. Sandy and stays quite shallow for a good way out. Good idea to hire a hire for a few days as well to see some of the sights.

Sorry that should have said "hire a car"!

That is brilliant customer service,, ,!!

GorgeousTulips · 24/08/2024 23:00

I did this once on holiday . Left my jewellery in a pouch in a drawer. It was all sent on to me by the hotel. I never take jewellery abroad now. Terrified I will lose it. I lost a favourite earring in an airport too.

I think the idea is to put the shoe in the safe not hide items in a shoe - since you aren’t going to leave the hotel room wearing only one shoe, it means you won’t forget to check the safe.

Veryverycalmnow · 24/08/2024 23:12

So glad it worked out. What amazing service and phew for you getting it sorted! It looks fabulous. Enjoy the rest of the summer hols ☺️

Jeezitneverends · 24/08/2024 23:18

What a brilliant ending!

The only jewellery I take on holiday is what I wear day to day-I have way too much potential to leave something behind!

Motnight · 24/08/2024 23:21

Love a thread with a happy ending!

Icequeen01 · 24/08/2024 23:21

I have certainly learnt my lesson about taking jewellery on holiday in future!

You don't put the things in the shoe, you put the shoe in the safe. So when you are getting ready to leave the room and you've only got one shoe, it's an obvious prompt.

I travel a lot for work, so it's ingrained in me to check the safe, but years ago the hotel took my passport off me at reception and I totally forgot until I was in the queue to check in for my flight home! Luckily hotel and airport were only 5 miles apart so I sent a taxi to the hotel to collect it and bring it back.

It's easily done OP, you're not the first and you certainly won't be the last! Hope you're reunited with your jewellery soon.

Runnerinthenight · 24/08/2024 23:30

Brilliant that they found your jewellery! Having also had a 60th it would be so upsetting to lose a pressie!

I only take minimal jewellery with me now. Mind you luggage allowances now are so shit that I only take minimal everything!!

Having travelled to an airport more than 1.5 hours away, only to get into the airport and realise I'd left my passport at home, I feel your pain!! I was was travelling with DD2 and she had to fly ahead of me, while I rebooked for a later flight that cost me 100e, and had to spend the day in the airport while DH had to drive another 3 hour+ round trip to collect said passport...

There was a reason why I stayed in the airport lol!

TheSilentSister · 24/08/2024 23:37

If I just put a shoe in the safe, I'd think I'd had too much to drink.

In my case, I obviously thought I'd be wearing trainers going home but UK had unexpected good weather. I didn't have a safe obviously and thought it would be the best place to hide stuff. Lesson learnt.

This kind of happened to a friend of ours who now always puts one of the pair of shoes she intends on travelling home in into the safe so she can’t go anywhere without going into the safe to get the shoe and her belongings.

Made me laugh but what a great idea!!

What a brilliant idea!

Do you mind me asking what board that was? All inclusive or b&b, etc?

I'm so pleased you found it. We love Crete but haven't stayed over that side.
