Is anybody else finding the weather really oppressive this summer?

Hi,

I just wondered if anybody else if find the weather really oppressive this summer?

We're grateful that it's not been boiling hot, as we live in the south east and that 42C heatwave was a real shock two or three years ago.

This summer has been weird too though. The weather forecast says it's not humid, and I know it's not hot, but the weather just feels kind of muggy all the time and we're constantly exhausted. I don't even know what it is that makes the weather feel like that.

I wondered if anybody else if finding the same and might know what it is?

Thanks!

I don’t remember it being 42! Also SE.
it is very muggy though this year.

FknOmniShambles · 22/08/2024 06:35

Yup I agree and it's really unpleasant. I just have a constant sheen on sweat and feel grubby. Doesn't seem to have been many warm but fresh clear blue days!

devildeepbluesea · 22/08/2024 06:36

Yes v muggy. Only stopped sleeping with a fan the last couple of nights.

Winter is creeping in again and I feel like there has been no summer. I just can’t face the darkness and cold again. Yes , muggy and unpleasant.

HelenWheels · 22/08/2024 06:37

also only stopped the fan at night a couple of nights ago
going to rain this afternoon.

garlictwist · 22/08/2024 06:37

It's just felt shite and cold to me.

Gonk123 · 22/08/2024 06:38

It has been a zero summer really hasn’t it and the same last year. Stressful.

Gymmum82 · 22/08/2024 06:41

I wish it was muggy here. It’s absolutely freezing. Wanted to put the heating on last night it was so cold. The wind is icy. Forecast for the weekend is 16 degrees. In bloody august but feels like 13 with the wind

Autumn1990 · 22/08/2024 06:42

It’s not summer anymore where I live (Yorkshire) it’s like autumn. Cool grey and windy
The few hot days with have had have been muggy and close.
It would be lovely to have an Indian summer but I don’t think we will be lucky. I just hope it doesn’t start raining constantly again.

Me too . Normally have the fan on a few nights but until recently it's been on constantly. I think the weather has been terrible and unpredictable since we lost our defined seasons .

Sheknowsaboutme · 22/08/2024 06:59

It has been miserable as it is summer, but im an autumn/winter girl do it doesn’t bother me.

i live 1000ft above sea level, im the sticks so its what im used to. Its ingrained in me!! I still go out for walks in the wind a d rain, if I didn’t I’d rarely go out!

but for those with younger kids etc i can see how difficult it is, and those vist

Jellycatspyjamas · 22/08/2024 07:03

Not oppressive just rainy, miserable shite - I’ve had the heating on already.

Fahran · 22/08/2024 07:06

We had the fire lit last night and put a blanket over the duvet. Muggy it isn’t!

ViciousCurrentBun · 22/08/2024 07:07

I remember that summer it reached almost 40 where I lived and DH taped white wallpaper on all the outside windows, it really helped and kept inside heat down he reckoned by about 5 degrees. He is a scientist so had his reasons.

The the air pressure and damp has made it feel muggy often which I hate.

RampantIvy · 22/08/2024 07:08

No. I'm in Yorkshire, and it has been quite pleasant since about mid July until the weekend just past.

It now feels very autumnal - grey, cool and windy. Last night was cold enough to trigger the heating coming on this morning.

I'm hoping for an Indian summer.

kindletimeisfinetime · 22/08/2024 07:12

We've had no rain really for the whole summer holidays. It's been really hot and muggy!!

Thurien · 22/08/2024 07:22

…might know what it is?

Climate change. We have been told that while the precise effects are not absolutely clear, we can expect our traditional seasons to be replaced with less defined weather patterns. For the northern and Western Europe we should expect warmer winters and summers with more rain. Winters in particular may feel longer despite the increased temperature and humidity.

This could change if the Gulf Stream were to collapse as we could have much colder seasons all round.

Modelling where our weather patterns are going is therefore fraught with uncertainty, but one thing is clear - our seasons as we knew them have definitely been changing, albeit gradually, for at least the last 30 years.

RampantIvy · 22/08/2024 07:23

It hasn't been hot and muggy everywhere. I suspect that the hot and muggy areas are London and the south east.

We haven't had one evening where it has been hot enough to stay outside all evening.

Iggityziggety · 22/08/2024 07:24

Like autumn in S. Wales too, very windy, raining, leaves everywhere and saw a couple of trees down in the last few days. Also cold. Like others when it has been warm it's been very muggy rather than sunny. I didn't bother buying any summer clothes this year which was obviously the right call!

Oblomov24 · 22/08/2024 07:25

I have found it unpleasant and quite depressing. The lack of sun and warmth, the constantly changing, with sunny and boiling one day then pissing it down with rain the next, had meant no stability. I have found it miserable. They say it's going to be like this from now on and I find that thought really quite depressing.

menopausalmare · 22/08/2024 07:26

I've been really tired this month. Jobs, such as gardening, which I love, are so much harder this year. I've been chalking it up to my age but the weather is playing a part.

Threewheeler1 · 22/08/2024 07:28

Yep, I seem to be permanently a bit clammy (SW) and having horrible night sweats. Might just be me though!
This humidity makes me feel sort of grubby all day - longing for a bit of crispness to the air!
Garden is absolutely parched too.

BaselineDrop · 22/08/2024 07:31

I feel like I’ve been living a different summer to everyone else. We had some lovely days in July, one my birthday had a big BBQ then we sat out comfortably until 11. June was slightly disappointing but most of July was spent in the garden. Been away for most of august but I think there was a hot spell? it’s been fine since we got back other than yesterday and it’s forecast to warm up again next week. I always think of August as wet anyway. Overall I think it’s been lovely, some lovely warm days but not too dry (the garden is happy) and boiling hot. Bit everywhere I go people are saying what an awful summer it’s been.

Summer 2022 - though it ‘officially’ topped 40, it did get to 42 in some areas.

Gnomegarden32 · 22/08/2024 07:39

Yes, so many muggy days where the sky is almost dark grey. I feel like we had some amazing summers a few years back, not sure what's happened.
