Is anybody else finding the weather really oppressive this summer?

Hi,

I just wondered if anybody else if find the weather really oppressive this summer?

We're grateful that it's not been boiling hot, as we live in the south east and that 42C heatwave was a real shock two or three years ago.

This summer has been weird too though. The weather forecast says it's not humid, and I know it's not hot, but the weather just feels kind of muggy all the time and we're constantly exhausted. I don't even know what it is that makes the weather feel like that.

I wondered if anybody else if finding the same and might know what it is?

Thanks!

I've just been for a walk - south East and it was bloody freezing. Had my wool jumper on.

I think the humidity has been quite bad this month but it always in in August.

…might know what it is?

Climate change. We have been told that while the precise effects are not absolutely clear, we can expect our traditional seasons to be replaced with less defined weather patterns. For the northern and Western Europe we should expect warmer winters and summers with more rain. Winters in particular may feel longer despite the increased temperature and humidity.

This could change if the Gulf Stream were to collapse as we could have much colder seasons all round.

Modelling where our weather patterns are going is therefore fraught with uncertainty, but one thing is clear - our seasons as we knew them have definitely been changing, albeit gradually, for at least the last 30 years.

This times a million. There's a piece in the Guardian today pointing out summer temperatures now are warmer than ever but people perceive them as cold because they've become accustomed to the background warming.

I'd also say people romanticize past summers and remember them as blissful but every single summer will have people saying that classic line "we haven't had much of a summer this year have we?"

We are going to have to learn to live with suboptimal weather because even if we do our utmost to mitigate climate change now (and frankly we are not doing this), we've done plenty of damage already.

I feel like I’ve been living a different summer to everyone else. We had some lovely days in July, one my birthday had a big BBQ then we sat out comfortably until 11. June was slightly disappointing but most of July was spent in the garden. Been away for most of august but I think there was a hot spell? it’s been fine since we got back other than yesterday and it’s forecast to warm up again next week. I always think of August as wet anyway. Overall I think it’s been lovely, some lovely warm days but not too dry (the garden is happy) and boiling hot. Bit everywhere I go people are saying what an awful summer it’s been.

DD has a birthday mid July, and the weather until then was awful apart from a few days in June, and even more awful on her birthday. It rained on St Swithin's day, then got warmer after that. I have managed to get more wear out of summer clothes this year than last year, but now it is cold, grey and windy. Maximum temperatures for the bank holiday weekend are:

Friday 16
Saturday 15
Sunday 15
Monday 19

It feels like summer is over in my part of Yorkshire.

Up until a couple of days ago it was really muggy here, in the north west. It was cloudy and sometimes rainy but very humid, horrible! My house felt so damp. It’s cleared here now though and is windy and a bit cold to be honest!

RhubarbAndCustardSweets · 22/08/2024 08:02

I live in Cumbria. I moved here from the south coast around 15 years ago and this is the first year I've regretted it.

It's ducking miserable. We even have the remnants of a hurricane hitting us today. Torrential rain. Bloody cold. I've dug out my tights to wear to work under my dress.

muddyford · 22/08/2024 08:05

In the South-West here. We don't really seem to have had a summer. The odd week when it's been warm and sunny, but more days like today, not cold but I need a sweatshirt to walk, windy, grey. More like autumn. The light intensity has been generally low (it was last summer) so we go from grey wet winter to grey summer, which doesn't help. Still, better than a decade or so ago when it rained every single day for eighteen months, beginning in October.

Disturbia81 · 22/08/2024 08:06

Yes very muggy in Yorkshire, maybe because there's been so much rain this year?

cavalier · 22/08/2024 08:07

Yes driving me up the wall lol

DeathMetalMum · 22/08/2024 08:08

I also think the weather has been OK. Since dc broke up for school they have had the pool in the garden for a few days. While we were away on holiday in the UK we had one afternoon of rain the whole week. Rest of the time was spent out in the sun, dc even swam in the sea several times. We also left the beach early one day as it was v warm and v busy.

I agree June was wetter and cooler than usual. But I've worn loads of my summer clothes. I've noticed a slight turn in the weather the last few days. Mainly very cool at night but the days have still been warm just with a breeze.

Where in Yorkshire is it muggy? I'm on the edge of the Pennines and we have had several warm days, but not muggy.

Startingagainandagain · 22/08/2024 08:10

I am on the Kent coast and it has been OK this summer.

I was on the beach and swimming yesterday :) and have been able to do that quite a few times this year.

No perfect, but we have had a decent amount of warm, sunny days.

RightOnTheEdge · 22/08/2024 08:12

I'm in North Yorkshire and I feel like it's been really muggy.
Even when it's dull and grey or raining, it just doesn't seem fresh.
I just want a nice cool breeze.

DappledThings · 22/08/2024 08:12

It's been good overall in SE. A couple of weeks where it was far too hot, annoyingly when we were on holiday and restricted us a bit, but otherwise OK. Not really muggy but I'm quite near the coast so it's got better breezes.

A bit grey today but still warm.

I prefer it like this. No extremes. I'd be happy with it never getting over 25 and every day being sunny spells rather than full sun.

RampantIvy · 22/08/2024 08:12

Cool and breezy here.

Thurien · 22/08/2024 08:15

Just want to add another thing. If you work outside - long term work over several decades - you will be very aware how the seasons have changed compared to the experience of someone who works inside or who is aged 20’s or 30’s.

fnvfjj · 22/08/2024 08:17

It hasn’t been much of a summer in these parts. We’ve had the odd nice day but no nights warm enough to sit out or where we’ve had to get the fan out. It’s rained a lot. It’s been windy and raining for the past couple of days, and there’s an autumnal chill in the air.

hairbearbunches · 22/08/2024 08:23

Make your peace with it because we're not ever going back to those proper seasons. The planet is completely stuffed and anyone who thinks otherwise has just not been paying attention, or wilfully ignoring the scientists' pleas.

What we've experienced this year could become as good as it gets. It feels erratic, it is erratic. We are no longer a temperate island. The time for changing course was back in the 1970s, we're way past that now. Politicians have still got their fingers in their ears, singing la la la la. City Airport has just been green lighted to increase passenger numbers by 2.5 million a year. Climate change? What climate change. Pfft.

Disturbia81 · 22/08/2024 08:25

@RampantIvy Near Leeds. Today is lovely and breezy but there's been a lot of warm but cloudy muggy days in the last few months.

Hope you're getting this lovely fresh breeze we've got in Leeds today :)

Lurkingandlearning · 22/08/2024 08:29

You might all like to know I’m going to get an air conditioning unit for next year and that will almost guarantee a chilly summer, because that’s how my luck goes 😬

Jennalong · 22/08/2024 08:32

I put the winter weight duvets back on the beds yesterday.
I normally do that late September / early October.

BaselineDrop · 22/08/2024 08:36

@Lurkingandlearning thank you for taking this one for the team.

LuckySantangelo35 · 22/08/2024 08:40

I want it to be more muggy and hot. It’s been cold, windy and rainy so much this year - it’s shite.

TheChosenTwo · 22/08/2024 08:44

I’m in the SE and yesterday I was bloody cold! Today it’s raining, definitely not muggy or oppressive. I like the heat, please can we have some more sunshine before it gets properly bleak again?!

TorturedParentsDepartment · 22/08/2024 09:03

We've not had those nice low 20s days much around here (East Mids) - we've either had shit high humidity so it's been muggy as hell and an uncomfortable mush of sweat, or it's been back to being very early autumn type weather.

It's not been nice.
