Is anybody else finding the weather really oppressive this summer?

Hi,

I just wondered if anybody else if find the weather really oppressive this summer?

We're grateful that it's not been boiling hot, as we live in the south east and that 42C heatwave was a real shock two or three years ago.

This summer has been weird too though. The weather forecast says it's not humid, and I know it's not hot, but the weather just feels kind of muggy all the time and we're constantly exhausted. I don't even know what it is that makes the weather feel like that.

I wondered if anybody else if finding the same and might know what it is?

Thanks!

Where in Yorkshire is it muggy? I'm on the edge of the Pennines and we have had several warm days, but not muggy.

I'm between York and Selby. It's felt permanently muggy here since mid-June. It's felt so much hotter than the thermometer says it is all summer. There's just been no air, and we've all been complaining of feeling sticky/stuffy all summer. It's been horrible!

I’m in Scotland and it felt cold yesterday- I think the damp weather makes it feel colder. I was working from home and had fluffy socks on and a fleece. When it got to the stage of me having to put a heat pad under my fleece I thought enough is enough and turned the heating on for a bit. I do have some health issues, so perhaps I feel the cold more. I’m back in the office today and after a miserable windy and rainy start to the morning the sun is out. I’m about to close the blinds as I’m squinting because of the sun 😂

It's quite flat where you are. I'm at a higher altitude, and even on hot days there is nearly always a breeze from the Pennines.

I don't recognise the hot muggy weather that posters are talking about on this thread.

It goes to show how many different micro climates there are in so many parts of the UK.

I definitely felt like Chicken Licken this morning - the sky was so dark and clouds so low, it felt oppressive.

It's been a cloudy but warm summer in Essex, with some lovely hot, sunny days in-between. I'd say it's been an ok summer, just the cloudiness made it feel a bit crap. We had a very dull June which didn't help, nothing in my garden grew for weeks.

My favourite weather is a clear, bright day, sunny with a slight breeze and about 24 degrees. We haven't had many of them at all.

I'm utterly fed up with the weather. I'm in the SW, I think I've seen the sun for about 4 days this year. I live in a county where there is VERY little to do inside, so we've been stuck in the house for the majority as no one wants to be wet and miserable out there. We go on holiday soon, and I have everything crossed that I actually get to feel some warmth on my skin for a continuous period of time!

I've been really tired this month. Jobs, such as gardening, which I love, are so much harder this year. I've been chalking it up to my age but the weather is playing a part.

I think the lack of a definable spring has really thrown me off gardening wise. My garden looked pretty sad this year.
My small veg patch did well though but my tomato crop completely failed.

Yes overall a muggy mess when summer finally kicked - off.

Mine too.

If I hadn't managed to get lucky with a week of sun in Cornwall this year I would be very depressed.

Mischance · 22/08/2024 09:45

It's like October here - I feel totally cheated of the summer, especially as I have been ill (heart attack) and had hoped to convalesce out in the garden in the sunshine. Definitely pissed off here. It's the wind that is getting to me - even on days when the sun is out you can barely walk around without getting blown over.

I'm in a small minority in this thread - having enjoyed the weather this summer. I've pretty much worn shorts and t shirt comfortably every day for the last couple of months. It's rarely been too hot in the day or 'can't sleep' hot and it hasn't got cold or wet enough to need any more clothes. Perfect!

Where is the SE are you? I’m on the North Kent coast and it’s been a lovely summer. Took a while to get going but once it did it’s been weeks of lovely hot sunny weather (bit too hot sometimes) and not muggy. That might be the effect of being in the coast though I suppose. Today is the first overcast and rainy day for over a month, doesn’t look like we’re getting much rain though which is a shame as the garden is all looking a bit dead atm.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/08/2024 09:59

It hasn't been a good or bad summer really - at least it didn't rain much, but after the wet autumn, winter and spring I was hoping for a beautiful summer. We definitely didn't get that. Very average.

Just been home (Manchester) for a few weeks. I was sweatier there than I am in the heat of Saudi. 43C today but it's a dry heat. Much more bearable for Perimeno me.

The problem is that one person’s hot is another’s mildly warm. There have been one or two warm days this summer but none that I would regard as hot.

Absolutely! Our bit of Yorkshire seems to do entirely its own thing. In winter, we're quite often surrounded by snow - schools 5 miles away closed etc, while we have nothing but rain.
