For me, it's a combination of accent, subtle, expensive haircut & highlights or that perfect shade of blonde..

Old car and a messy front garden

This made me laugh - I defo qualify if this is the criteria!!!! In reality I come from a very large and very rough council estate. But I am often thought of as posh because I speak clearly (elocution lessons in drama school) and I have an accent difficult to pin down (as above, plus living overseas and having a good 'ear' for accents means my accent smoothed out).

Nanana1 · 20/08/2024 17:12

Old money is very different to new.

New money doesn’t need to hide their wealth, they likely earned it through hard graft and proud of the fact. Old money hides wealth because historically it’s often came via nefarious means and the local peasants are less likely to revolt if the lord of the manor isn’t rubbing it in their faces!

MidnightMeltdown · 20/08/2024 17:13

Their taste in clothes and how well maintained they are (nobody has ever looked posh in a crumpled outfit!).

Zebedee999 · 20/08/2024 17:21

My experience with "old school" posh is that they'd talk politely and without judgement to me (very working class / humble background) and make me feel right at home whilst looking after me very well. Seemingly very open and welcoming.

"New money" posh are more judgemental ime.

treacledan71 · 20/08/2024 17:31

Go out with friends for meals in the week. A few holidays a year. A costa every morning. This is lighthearted by the way just a few nice people I work with.

Totally agree with this.

not giving a fuck

Always a light tan. Never sunburnt.

Posh means having old sofas from the 1950 that are family heirlooms. The kitchens are the heart fj the home and they might be amazing or run down. It also means a certain type of vowel sound. They never holiday in common places like Mallorca or Turkey but spend time at people places in France or Antigua. Many ski and have holidays in the UK in Summer. Then occasionally they head off to Borneo or Vietnam. They never eat dinner but eat supper. They refer to going to London as ‘going to town’. They wear proper morning suit with ties to wedding and definitely not the cravat thing.
They do or don’t care about cars so either it’s a 80,000 4x4 or a really old Volvo but never a Vauxhall. Their kids are called after the Classics or obscure place names. They also show a sense of humour about your name and mannerisms if they let you into their circle and you don’t quite fit. They subtlety might offer to pay if they perceive that they have more. They often had an ironic sense of humour or can be droll.

They never talk about money or show off unless they are new rich. However they have slight signs of wealth eg a coutts bank account or 4 kids at public school. They tend to talk to all people as equals and don’t put people down. They struggle with vegetarians and will still offer you venison after a hunt. Oh yes the hunting and the drink beforehand another thing.

New rich will talk about their nanny, their expensive yacht and their famous brother in law etc, They will be well groomed and expensively clothed.

Old wealth clothes wise they gingham shirts and old Barbour jackets that have seen better days and cord trousers. The men can wear pink or red trousers.
in the city they wear tailored suits. They have proper cuff links. Black tie is always properly tied and not an elasticated thing.

You can be posh with little money if you went to the right school or have family connections.

This is the "old" posh i know too.. and most of them swear like troopers !

Clothes from the charity shop and a stinky dog

Yay- I’m posh! 😂

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 20/08/2024 17:43

Accent, manner, word choice. Not hair, clothes etc particularly. It's perfectly possible to be very posh and not at all stylish (or blessed with thick hair!).

Lorrymum · 20/08/2024 17:50

Naturally confident, never talk about money, think you are insane if you try to take shoes off at the door, casually swear constantly (never sounds offensive).Sofas covered in dog hair (rarely cats).

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/08/2024 16:58

Wills and Charles don’t have this though. Neither does Princess Anne

She definitely did in her younger days.

billysboy · 20/08/2024 17:59

Cannot abide the word Posh
Accent , manners and confidence definitely not new money or posted accent

EmilyLuc · 20/08/2024 18:00

True posh is when you would still be in no doubt of their poshness even if they lost all their money!

Dotto · 20/08/2024 18:05

The other end of the spectrum tends to pay more attention to their hair than proper posh people, I find.

SallyWD · 20/08/2024 18:07

It's just accent. I know some very posh people who are extremely scruffy. Posh people don't always wear posh clothes!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/08/2024 18:09

Manners in all situations. Always able to casually pivot to solve a problem. Wouldn't dream of embarrassing someone. Accommodating. At ease.

PhoebeFeels · 20/08/2024 18:10

I did know a lady from an aristocratic family. Beautiful voice, hardened by smoking. So polite. She was broke, lived rent free in what had been the Dower House. Her name cropped up in history, on the fringe of great events.
Excellent with horses and dogs.

MrsWhattery · 20/08/2024 18:12

Muddy 4x4
Those pinky-red trousers for the men
Don't have any hang-ups about who they know or talk to
Sweary but may also say "golly"
Buy those individual serving packs of M&S veg
Has a horse (or more than one)

Posh means having old sofas from the 1950 that are family heirlooms.
Yes and they will refer to such a sofa as "rather good"

Mairzydotes · 20/08/2024 18:14

The visual sign is good quality footwear. In fact , good quality everything, which they keep, rather than replace for the sake of having something new.

Eloquence.

I don't think being posh necessarily means rich, lots of posh people have very little disposable income.

Genuine poshness is easy to distinguish for the fake Hyacinth Bucket type.

Coughsweet · 20/08/2024 18:15

Not being on Mumsnet because so many on here seem to be fascinated by poshness markers so I assume they are not.

Yes, definitely no shoes off!

You missed the bit where the OP said it was lighthearted.

So you'd be OK with a thread about how to spot a Poor Person provided it says it is "lighthearted" ?
