Tory leader hopeful mel Stride tying himself in knots here

https://x.com/Haggis_UK/status/1829425060836217194

Mel Stride says that banning smoking in pub gardens is a press against individual freedom, but Rishi Sunak wanting to ban smoking was not taking away people's freedoms because they've never been legally entitled to smoke..

Hilarious!

I have no problem with extending the smoking ban, but tbh it wouldn't be my top priority. It has pissed off Fromage though, so that's a plus.

I don't realise I was dim. Thanks Rummly. 🙂

If a PM is frightened by a painting of a previous PM you’d have to wonder whether Starmer has the nerve for the job. But then as he’s not remotely bothered by the picture it’s not something we have to ponder.

For the reason this monumentally inconsequential and contrived ‘news’ is known about, I think we can put that down to Starmer and his comms people placating the Labour left.

Projection? I didn't say HE was frightened of her. But you go ahead with your side swipes at a decent PM. Says more about you.

I also don't think it in anyway placates the left. She is hated by a wide range of people.

Oh, don't be so silly. Those who are "Labour left" and hate Starmer aren't going to be placated by such a minor thing. Starmer knows that, I suspect. Maybe he just hates Thatcher?

PandoraSox · 30/08/2024 09:46

As you all know I am not Starmer's biggest fan, but some of the criticisms of him on MN are just beyond desperate.

DuncinToffee · 30/08/2024 09:50

Man rearranges pictures on wall doesn't quite sounds as exciting for a DM headline

Saucery · 30/08/2024 09:54

I bet there is a collection of official portraits that are rearranged according to the current govt and resident PM. But that doesn't sound nearly as exciting and frothy as KS being 'scared' of Thatcher.

countrygirl99 · 30/08/2024 09:56

Maybe there's just a picture he would prefer to look at on a daily basis. Portraits get a bit boring to look at after 5 minutes.

Notonthestairs · 30/08/2024 10:00

Non story. Unworthy of a moments consideration.

Maybe he should have bought and got someone else to pay for some very expensive tacky wallpaper instead.

BustingBaoBun · 30/08/2024 10:07

It makes me laugh that this can even be discussed. To me it means that there's no great scandals to talk about and government has got a bit boring which is what I was hoping after the shitshow Tories left the building.

Ester McVey is a first class idiot, went with the job as Minister for silly walks or whatever it was.

She has just posted this:

I don't need to take lessons in civics from Ester McVey. (Or her equally repugnant husband - which speaks volumes about her life choices)

I hope Sunak got rid of that ghastly sofa and matching wallpaper horror that was Carrie's taste of modelling the front room on a bordello.

You said she was “frightening”.

If seems very doubtful that Starmer’s moved the painting for aesthetic reasons. Paintings of Harold Wilson or Lord Palmerston aren’t any easier on the eye. Maybe he’ll put up a picture of The Green Lady or dogs playing poker.

As for ‘desperate’ ’criticisms’ of Starmer (another poster)…please.

Steady, @DuncinToffee will be along to tell you off for your discourtesy.

Notonthestairs · 30/08/2024 10:19

Given the state of the nation is moving a portrait from one room to another really a news story for anyone?

SerendipityJane · 30/08/2024 10:20

When the smoking ban was planned, it amused my how the government relied on how thick people are (and yes, you really are in a mass) to get it through.

Because another - completely valid and maybe more relatable approach - would have been to ask the public "How much more tax overall are you willing to pay to ban smoking ? 1% 2 5%"

I bet the "enthusiasm" would have quickly disappeared.

Mind you, we could have had a referendum on it :

"Do you think smoking should be banned ? Yes or no"

PandoraSox · 30/08/2024 10:21

Something that happened a quarter of a century ago is really not the gotcha you think it is.

Why come on to this thread just to insult us?

If, as a country that's all we have to worry about then I'd say things are going well.

Odd the Daily Mail should choose to have a story that highlights how well the government is doing.

Either that or they really are run by a bunch of interns cosplaying journalism.

Your choice.

SerendipityJane · 30/08/2024 10:25

And as predicted, Stamer has returned from Europe with fine words and nothing else. I believe the NYC saying is "that and a dollar gets you a subway fare".

I can only think he's going through this charade to prove to his own Brexaloons (because you know they are there) that no amount of magic thinking is going to achieve anything.

I really hope he hasn't got Boris syndrome and expected a cake and eat it deal just because he's Keir (or just because he isn't Rishi).

DuncinToffee · 30/08/2024 10:31

It's going to be painfully slow, the elephant stays

I didn’t say it was. I’m just pointing out that venal pomposity and personal wastefulness crosses party boundaries.

Why shouldn’t I come on this thread? I personally see it as a public service to point out Labour double-standards and hypocrisy. My favourite so far has been the WFA and the Damascene conversion of Labour supporters to benefit bashing.

I can’t imagine any pro-Labour supporters have ever been on any pro-Tory thread to express a view. 🙄

As it happens, what Starmer and Reeves are softening us up for seem to me to be broadly sensible Tory fiscal policies. Also Streeting, Milburn and the NHS. So I’m sure there’ll be plenty of praise for the government from me in the future.

And long may you continue. However remember in the last 14 years when some were doing the exact same for the Tories, it wasn't treated as a public service, but as one long whingefest. And in terms of ideological dissonance, it never ceases to amaze me the the Tories "the party of small state" are quite happy to throw billions at the sectors their mates work in to ensure they are "regulated" to the nth degree so the little person can fuck off.

Sauce, goose, gander and all that.
