Meanwhile just another reminder not to be disabled in Britain in 2024. This single story will be the tip of a 10,000 story iceberg. And that's just for train travel.

I saw her Tweets this morning, i'd love to say it's shocking but it really isn't unfortunately. To be disabled in Britain is honestly such a dehumaising experience.

Surprised the Tories didn't make it illegal, really. After all if you can wave a wand over Rwanda and make it safe, you can certainly disappear the disabled the same way.

Why should taxpayers pick up the bill for peoples lifestyle choices ?

The party political strategy of the Starmer speech is obvious and well understood, but his central argument is undeniable. A situation where the PM is having to check prison places daily during riots is symptomatic of an utterly broken country.

DuncinToffee · 27/08/2024 10:33

Depressingly true SerendipityJane

BustingBaoBun · 27/08/2024 10:38

Have to say... Starmer's speech is spot on. I daren't say it elsewhere on that Do you regret voting Labour thread.

The comparison between 2011 and 2024 riots as far as justice and sentencing was really quite shocking.

Starmer on Downing St location for his speech:

“This is a garden and a building once used for lockdown parties…this garden and this building is now back in your service.”

Oh my! That is my favourite quote!

With respect, it's symptomatic of a broken system. A bit less of the hyperbole, Keir, mate. If the PM is checking prison places daily, then he's doing the job that 50 other people should be doing before it reaches him.

So the possibilities are:

  1. these jobs exists, but are not filled - recruit
  2. these jobs exists and are filled - mass sackings and get people who can do the job
  3. these jobs do not exist but should - fix the department so they do. Recruit and move on.

Successful businesspeople do not make their money by making everything complicated and then drowning in complexity. They do it by simplifying things so they are easy to do.

SerendipityJane · 27/08/2024 11:00

Meanwhile in other news, our communist biased media continues to peddle lies.

What about the tens of thousands of protestors who had Jeremy Corbyn memorabilia stashes ? Why are they not being reported ? #2tierpolicing

He said "We had to check..." prison places - I highly doubt he meant that he personally rang around prison governors. But I don't doubt that it was a concern.

It really is. My DH is a wheelchair user and it can be very, very hard.

I see the Tory rabble rousers are back from their hols and busy getting Tory MN knickers in a twist.

It's horrible to see how as a society we are failing so hard.

I had a visit from my in laws over the weekend, all my MIL could talk about was how much she 'hates' KS because he's 'dangerous'. Yet this very same woman loved Boris... my eyes were rolling so hard it was PAINFUL.

Alwaystired94 · 27/08/2024 11:32

Just been reading KS speech and this part really jumped out at me:

'We ended the national strikes that have crippled our country for years, because I defy anyone to tell me that you can grow the economy when people can't get to work, because the transport system is broken, or can't return to work because they're stuck on an NHS waiting list,' he said.

'We've done more in seven weeks than the last government did in seven years. And these are just the first steps towards the change that people voted for, the change that I'm determined to deliver.'

Maybe it's because i'm stuck on an NHS waiting list currently but i don't see how people have such an issue with the pay rises which are needed? Do these people genuinely believe our NHS is a lucrative career already?

RobinStrike · 27/08/2024 11:35

I heard Jack Straw on Times Radio emphasising that the Tory govt designed the remit for the pay review bodies. It didn't include productivity. It is normal for a government to accept the recommendations of a body they have set up, which is what Labour have done. The unions didn't get everything they wanted, they got what the review body recommended.

Interesting thread in politics about how did we end up with the 22billion black hole.

I always feel suspicious of posters asking questions like that but maybe it's genuine.

Who said we are failing ? A lot of people - admittedly Tory types - believe we aren't failing enough. Are we still wasting money on the disabled ?

true... the very same people who don't believe in things such as reasonable adjustments. In my job i help with our DEI at my company and one of the main things i saw was how disability unfriendly we were as a company. That's now been turned around fast. but of course we had the predictable people, "of if you're doing x for y then what am i getting?" nothing because you don't need a reasonable adjustment to leave the building if its on fire.

SerendipityJane · 27/08/2024 12:09

nothing because you don't need a reasonable adjustment to leave the building if its on fire.

I believe the company can now get a discount on a coffin. Does that count ?

DuncinToffee · 27/08/2024 12:12

I fear there will be plenty of threads popping up complaining about the pay rises along with benefit bashing.

I've already seen benefit bashing... "i earn 120k with tax rises i might aswell just go on benefits" ok do it then... prove it.

Yes, they have popped up quicker than I expected

I'm sure there are some users who rub their hands together for any chance to belittle those in poverty, those on benefits, those with disabilities etc. They're just itching to post their awful opinions.

bombastix · 27/08/2024 12:43

It’s not going to focus on earnings but assets. I am not sure I can summon up much sympathy for buy to let landlords and multinational companies who have not had comparable tax to PAYE. It is about time we looked at oil and gas companies for instance

My DH and I worked for decades. DH now gets PIP and I get Carer's Allowance. Those threads make me feel as though we are scroungers. It's horrible.
