@dontcallmelen - I'd wondered that about the betablocker too. Ds asked how long he'd have to stay on it & Consultant said: 'for the time being'. It seems time isn't on his side re moving out in 2 weeks- we were told he'd need 'all the vaccinations he can get' now 'but ask GP'. GP says call vaccination clinic. But they need referral from GP. Then 'a few weeks' depending on which ones (which we've not been told). So not done in time for Uni move. It's all very minor so sorry to whinge, but it's frustrating & doesn't build confidence in HCPs for an Autistic YP who is still processing what happened 6 wks ago. My younger YP, also Autistic wants to be a Paramedic (did before this tho!)
I won't post much again as not thread topic but I do appreciate the support x

Don't apologise @medianewbie , it's not a minor thing and you are not whinging Flowers

It's also a window on both the state of the NHS and the view society has of people with autism. So much work to be done.

A falling out among thieves is an event to be greatly desired.

PickAChew · 22/08/2024 13:03

I wonder if the express deliberately chose a photo where Habib is the colour of 🥓🥓

I hope you can convince your DS to take the option closer to home, @medianewbie as heading off to university sounds like it could go wrong for him in so many ways. There don't seem to be that many positives to him going to that university at that point in time and even if he makes a good recovery, he would still be in a city he doesn't like, a long way from home with iffy support at best.

itsgettingweird · 22/08/2024 13:07

Median you've probably already considered this and I hope I don't sound patronising - but has your ds/ you looked into and/or considered doing a year through the OU this year and transferring the ucas points? (You use to be able to do this).

I, wondering if it's a happy medium between feeling like a backwards step to college to do HNC and not quite being well enough to go to uni.

He could do his degree as distance learning?

GCSE's results today, The North-South attainment gap is wider than pre-pandemic

Didn't Habib bankroll Reform, and then he was ousted. He will obviously be bitter. Interesting to read that the company 'ReformUK' is now 60% owned by Fartage.

It's all down to you Nige !
p.s. How is Clacton doing on the world stage after you bigged it up in the US?

SerendipityJane · 22/08/2024 16:04

So he's a fucking idiot. Why should anyone listen to him ?

It feels like the 80s again.

Notonthestairs · 22/08/2024 16:37

GCSE results day in the Stairs household. I feel like 👍 missed a whole night sleep and, for the first time since end of June, DS was out of bed before me this morning. He did really well and we are very proud.

The north-south attainment gap was talked about when I was at school.

Surely it's a failure of successive governments that this hasn't been addressed in the intervening 30 years.

Not only has it not been addressed but it is widening.

This article is from last year -
Sir Kevan Collins resigned as the government’s schools recovery tsar in 2021 after the government agreed to fund only 10% of the £15bn package he felt was “the minimum viable option”.

This week he told the Observer that his greatest fear then was that, without proper investment, existing gaps – between children in the north and the south, and between the least and most privileged – would widen. This summer’s results proved him right, but he says: “I take no comfort in the idea of ‘I told you so’. It feels very sad.”

There is zero chance of Farage democratising Reform (whilst banging on about democracy elsewhere). But that also means that the buck stops with the 60% shareholder, although really he'd deny any responsibility for anything.

Zonder · 22/08/2024 16:56

How has he now got 60pc? He had 53 at the election. What a ridiculous "party" like that is doing in a democratic country I'll never know.

Which democratic country ? The UK or US ?

Yes, I've just read it, can't find it at the moment!

itsgettingweird · 22/08/2024 17:40

Well done mini stairs on your results.

I've just watched the first series of FF field of dreams. Oh my word I never expected to shed so many tears.

It's a real example of giving people a chance and finding the good in people. Opening up opportunities and bringing people together as a community.

As you all know my ds is a swimmer. It's actually a sport where many in ten larger clubs (which he trains at now) have families from wealthy backgrounds. So many professional parents WFH who can juggle it all and kids in private school. Over 50% of his squad are in private school.

I've always felt (although to be fair to the another parents in this club they've never made me feel this way) an outsider as a single parent, fairly low wage and also ds being disabled.

But ds has been real life proof that background and privilege don't necessarily mean more opportunities and more success. You have as much chance as the next person if you find a way and people are willing to invest in you.

He's very lucky he gets funding through sports aid - backing the best funding - which is for talented athletes who couldn't continue in the sport without some financial support. All because our NGB nominate him to give him an equal chance.

It's great, isn't it? And Freddie Flintoff is such a kind and non judgemental person.

He apparently got to 60% by making the CEO redundant and acquiring his 7% Hmm

It is. And no he isn't.

More need to learn from him.

When we don't judge, when we don't try and keep others down as it makes us feel raised up.

We can change someone's future.

I loved when he said I set out to see if we could find a decent player or a few - but it turned into something different. I loved how much he realised what actually matters.

Some of my best days at work are praising a kid for not punching someone when something went tits up 😂 sometimes it's a much bigger achievement than the kid who got all their maths correct - again! They all need praising. But the first kid needs not to written off because one day they'll be the one smashing maths - when they can actually manage a lesson!
